So important to see SMEs in the limelight. They are the engine room of our economy. They are critical to supply chain decarbonisation. We must increase access to financial support for transition. To do this we need radical simplification and a low friction way for banks to access the information they need. In the first instance energy usage data. Have been (re)reading the 2019 "Unlocking Digital Competition: Furman Review, which I think valuable to our conversations on Smart Data - especially in the contect of many of my active conversations around the material risks of 'corporate capture' of the foundations of our digital* economy. To me this has relevance to our economic security, our national security and our social cohesion (esp. when considering the disruption to our SME economy). From the 150 pages, some recommendations of relevance include: 1. Vehicle(s) that promote competition in digital markets by enforcing pro-competition rules and frameworks that support new market entrants and consumer choice. 2. A pro-competitive, binding, Code of Conduct to prevent anti-competitive practices by dominant digital platforms, ensuring fair treatment for consumers and businesses alike. 3. Data mobility and open standards, to allow users to move their data across platforms and supports interoperability to reduce market barriers. 4. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to take a proactive stance on digital mergers, focusing on preventing acquisitions that might limit competition or stifle innovation. 5.
