The confidence to say 'No' is a successful recruiter's superpower 🦸🏻 Often, the best vendors, partners and agencies are those who don't blindly say yes to every request Or follow every instruction without question. In fact, the best partners will push back when necessary to achieve the best outcome for you —and them Sometimes, that means turning down the work in the first place, even if it’s an opportunity that looks amazing on paper But saying 'No' requires confidence, patience and wisdom After 13 years' in recruitment, I feel able to say 'No' Because I’ve seen, first hand, that the most successful recruitment partnerships are not built on blind obedience. My first ever job was teaching drama to teenagers What I didn't realise at the time was that it was a master class in sales. As anyone who’s been around that age cohort knows, To capture the attention of a room full of restless teenagers, you need to be way more than just clear/informative/“on your game”. You need to be engaging, persuasive —and genuinely invested in connecting with them. So what’s the lesson here? ⬇️ Know your audience And show that audience why they should care about the message. Unlike what a lot of people might think, recruitment is not just about finding the employer a candidate who ticks all the boxes on a job description. It's about building a relationship where both the employer and candidate feel seen and heard. It's about understanding everyone’s motivations, their goals, and what truly makes them tick. Because when you truly connect with people, you can help them find an employee or a role where everyone will not only thrive but make an impact. I’ve always believed in bringing a little more humanity into the hiring process. And while this is not always easy (there are deadlines, quotas, and the constant pressure to fill roles quickly), I've learned the best way to close deals really is to open minds. That means taking the time to really listen, to understand, and connect. Absolutely electric conversation ⚡️ Anna Jones moderated a riveting panel discussion at the Women in AI Breakfast this morning hosted by Mercuri, featuring inspiring female leadership from some of the biggest names in UK tech. Especially loved the reminder from Lindsey Jayne to always keep user need at the forefront when building great products, instead of strong arming AI into something for the sake of it. Lots of interesting discussion about Agentic AI, and a wise word from Noa Havazelet about how important it is that founders build AI technology on ethical foundations so that ethical approaches can be in-built and scaled (as opposed to retro-fit)! What's worse: parent guilt or work guilt? ⤵ Today I'm struggling to square a heavy workload with important mum commitments I've got a busy day of meetings, whilst trying to close a deal But I'm also scheduled to take the kids to swimming lessons after school (Which is usually my husband's domain but he's got important meetings today, too) ⤵ Seems like a banal problem, but it throws up the perennial dilemma of the mumpreneur: Do I drop the work ball or the parenting ball? 🤹♀️ Without a boss telling me what meetings, projects and tasks are non-negotiable I need to make that judgement call myself. Do I cancel swimming (which the kids love) and stick them in after-school club so I can attend to my deadlines? Or do I neglect my work so I can be there for my kids?
