Home to some of the most prestigious polo tournaments in the world including the Cartier Queen's Cup

About us

Guards Polo Club was founded on 25th January 1955 with HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as the Club’s first President. A role he held for 66 years until his death in April 2021. The Club was originally named the Household Brigade Polo Club, only changing to its present form in 1969. Guards Polo Club became a fully civilian Club in 2000. Since inception the Club has grown considerably and it is now the largest polo club in Europe in terms of membership and number of grounds. A Board of Directors oversees the successful running and development of this Club. The Club’s season starts in April and finishes in mid September, hosting more than 500 matches each year. Our premier tournaments include the Cartier Queen’s Cup (high-goal), Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup (high-goal), Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup (medium-goal), Archie David Cup (low-goal), Guards Ladies’ Charity Polo Tournament (high-goal) and the Indian Empire Shield (high-goal). Other key competitions include the La Martina Varsity Day (Oxford v Cambridge), the Duke of Cornwall Trophy, the Inter Regimental Final and the Duke of Wellington Trophy.

  • Adebayo Karim has clearly inherited his family’s passion for polo. This 24-year-old is closely following in his father Kola, and uncle Tunde’s footsteps on the polo fields in Africa and the UK, particularly here at Guards Polo Club in his distinctive green and white helmet. We caught up with Adebayo in the latest issue of TenGoal magazine. How did you first get into polo? “I first got into polo because of the horses. Growing up in Nigeria, we lived next to the polo club and I liked the horses a lot and would hang out with them after school.” Earlier this year you made your high-goal debut, leading the Shoreline team into the 22-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup. “The speed, the players and horses you are facing is something I’d never experienced before. It was an experience that not everyone gets to have, so I am immensely grateful to my dad and uncle Tunde for giving me this opportunity.” So has that initial foray into the world of high-goal polo set the scene for Shoreline in 2025? “If we do return to the high-goal there are several things to consider,” says Adebayo. “The main thing is the horses. Playing medium- and low-goal you think you are well mounted, but then you play against the big organisations and you really feel the difference! We have some ideas – ultimately it depends on what we plan to play but we do have a few ideas, although nothing definitive yet. What I can confirm is that I will be playing in the Arena this winter.” What is your ultimate polo goal? “My personal polo goal would be to just get to as high as a handicap as possible. If I get to play high-goal again that would be great, but my handicap is my main aim.” An inherited passion for the game – can only reap dividends for Adebayo and the Shoreline team. So keep an eye out for that green and white hat on the polo fields of Guards Polo Club. • We had a fabulous (and festive) day with some of our Members’ earlier on this week as we visited the The Household Cavalry Musuem for a Director’s Tour, which included a short inspection of the King’s Life Guard, a ceremony that has remained unchanged for 350 years. This was followed by a festive lunchtime recital at the Royal Military Chapel featuring a brass ensemble from the Band of the Welsh Guards 🎺🎄 Thank you to the Household Cavalry Museum and the Royal Military Chapel for hosting us. #householdcavalrymuseum #welshguards #guardspoloclub #householdcavalry

  • Congratulations to the The La Martina team who won the second edition of the La Martina Guards Polo Club Challenge in Argentina this week. Hosted by the Novillo Astrada family at La Aguada Polo Club all three teams featured playing members of Guards Polo Club alongside La Martina renowned ambassadors and members of the talented Novillo Astrada family. The tournament was played in the usual, round robin format, creating a competitive yet friendly atmosphere. The green-shirted La Martina team came out best, winning both of their contests. A key member of this squad was Lynly Fong, playing in this competition for the first time. She was later rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize. Dino Dhankhar, one of La Martina’s newest ambassadors, featured strongly for the Guards Polo Club team, which also featured Club patrons Clive Reid and Elodie Avarguez. Dino was awarded the coveted La Martina Fair Play Award. To highlight the camaraderie that was evident throughout the tournament, the day concluded with drinks and an asado on the La Aguada lawns. We would like to extend our grateful thanks to La Martina, the Novillo Astrada family and Tomas Hume of La Aguada. • Fundraising is incredibly important to every single one of us here at the Club and we are delighted to announce that in 2024 with help of our Members’, players and visitors we raised almost 3million for charity. This is an incredible amount and our grateful thanks go to everyone who donated, sponsored, attended or supported any one of our charitable endeavours. This tally really is a remarkable achievement and one that we are all incredibly proud of here 🤍 Not surprisingly, one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for us was the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Polo Day at Flemish Farm. HRH The Prince of Wales was able to realise £1million which will be divided between 11 charities, personally selected by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Another staggering total was generated from our annual Access Bank Plc Day. This Nigerian bank has an incredibly strong bond with UNICEF working closely with this international charity to help build much needed classrooms and support education in Nigeria. This season was also the date for the biennial Charlie Stisted Memorial Shoot, with the charitable element definitely hitting the target. 20 teams took part in the clay pigeon shoot and a remarkable £39,000 was raised and split between the Coldstream Guards Charity and the Scots Guards Association. Our Ladies Charity Polo Day, held in August, was an equally impressive fundraiser, this time for Mary's Meals. The Club was able to raise £31,000, the equivalent of 310,000 meals. We were also delighted to welcome a new charity to the Club, Young Lives vs Cancer and host their charitable day for them as well as welcoming back Dogs for Good UK, SSAFA, The Not Forgotten and Macmillan Cancer Support. Again a huge thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts in 2024 and let’s see if we can smash this charitable record in 2025 🤍 #guardspoloclub #fundraising #charity #polo #windsor #smithslawn
