Since construction teams mobilized in early January 2024, the site is showing signs of progress at the 35MW Menengai geothermal project in Kenya. Recently, the first structural concrete pour for the hotwell pump foundations and hotwell pump walling rebar and formwork commenced! What is a hotwell pump you ask? The Hotwell pump is a crucial part of the condensate extraction system in #Menengai's steam cycle. Its primary function is to ensure the efficient circulation of condensate by pumping it from the hot well, located at the bottom of the condenser, back into the system. This pump also helps maintain the proper water level and vacuum in the condenser, allowing for the continuous circulation of fluid and ensuring the smooth operation of the entire power plant steam cycle. The Menengai project will be the company’s first geothermal plant and is part of the first phase of the wider Menengai geothermal complex, which is the second large-scale geothermal field being developed in Kenya after Olkaria. It will deliver clean, reliable, and affordable baseload power to the national grid and enable GDC to monetise the available steam resources from the Menengai steam field. Steam will be supplied to the project by @GDC under a 25-year project implementation and steam supply agreement. Globeleq will operate and maintain the power plant once it reaches commercial operations in 2025. Once operational, electricity will be sold to @Kenya Power, the national distribution company, under a 25-year power purchase agreement. SEE COMMENTS FOR PHOTOS! Great news from #Mozambique. Our 120MW Namaacha wind project, lead by our colleague Vince Mulder, has been awarded a 28-year concession by the Government. This is the country’s first utility-scale wind farm and will see investment of almost €250 million. Alongside our 450MW gas to power plant at Temane which is in construction and our solar plants at Cuamba and Mocuba, we're making big strides in Mozambique. 930 people working on at site our Temane Project in #Mozambique recently attended a #Safety Day where colleagues reflected on their performance this year & identified key concerns for the next 6 months. It's great to see such commitment to one of Globeleq's core values.
