A very exciting day here at the site of the @Globeleq 35 MW geothermal power project in Menengai! Our EPC Contractors, @ToyotaTsushoCorporation and their fully owned subsidiary @CFAOKenyaLimited are starting to mobilise their construction teams, with civil works to commence next week. Construction will take approximately 23 months and the team are targeting full commercial operation around Q4, 2025. During peak construction, it is expected the project will create approximately 200 job opportunities for local workers and upon operation, will provide jobs for 35 to 40 permanent staff and contractors.    The Menengai project will be the company’s first geothermal plant and is part of the first phase of the wider Menengai geothermal complex, which is the second large-scale geothermal field being developed in Kenya after Olkaria. It will deliver clean, reliable, and affordable baseload power to the national grid and enable GDC to monetise the available steam resources from the Menengai steam field. Steam will be supplied to the project by @GDC under a 25-year project implementation and steam supply agreement. Globeleq will operate and maintain the power plant once it reaches commercial operations in 2025. Once operational, electricity will be sold to @Kenya Power, the national distribution company, under a 25-year power purchase agreement. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $21 million grant to expand renewable energy in Tajikistan by modernizing the Golovnaya hydropower plant. The funding will be used to replace the power generation unit 4 at the Golovnaya plant, which ceased operations in 2019 due to mechanical damage. This unit was not included in the original ADB project approved in 2013. The initial project provided a $136 million grant to replace five of the plant’s six power generation units. It also involved rehabilitating switchyards, modernizing the Vose substation, and constructing the Rudaki substation along with a transmission line connecting Rudaki and Vose in southern Tajikistan. With these upgrades, the installed capacity of Golovnaya hydropower plant is expected to rise from 240MW to 274MW by 2026. Medupi Power Station: Located near Lephalale in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Medupi is one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the world. It has a planned capacity of approximately 4,764 megawatts (MW) once fully operational. The project faced several challenges, including delays and cost overruns. Delays were attributed to labor strikes, technical issues, and management problems. It uses supercritical boiler technology, which is designed to improve efficiency compared to older coal-fired power plants. Kusile Power Station: Situated near the Kendal Power Station in the Nkangala District of Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Kusile is another large coal-fired power station in the country. It has a planned capacity of about 4,800 MW once completed. Similar to Medupi, the Kusile project faced construction delays and cost overruns. Kusile, like Medupi, employs supercritical boiler technology for enhanced efficiency. Both Medupi and Kusile are part of Eskom's efforts to address electricity supply challenges in South Africa and contribute to the country's energy infrastructure. It's important to note that these projects have been subject to scrutiny due to the environmental impact of coal-fired power and the global shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Papua New Guinea, renowned for its rich natural resources and substantial renewable energy potential, is on the brink of a significant advancement in sustainable energy. The country’s vast hydro resources are central to its clean energy ambitions, and SMEC is proud to play a pivotal role in this transformation.    SMEC has been awarded the contract for the feasibility study of the Kuat I Hydropower Project in Papua New Guinea. Situated in the hydropower-rich Finschhafen district, this project will harness the power of the Kuat River to generate approximately 15 MW of clean, renewable energy annually. This energy will be integrated into the Ramu Distribution System, providing a reliable power source to support the growing industrial and mining sectors in Morobe Province.    Our comprehensive feasibility study, which includes detailed design and site investigations, will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team of experts in civil hydropower engineering, hydraulic systems and more. Equipped with four impulse units and a total installed capacity of 884MW, this project is set to provide 3.212 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, effectively addressing one-fifth of Pakistan's electricity gap. On 30th April 2024, MOEP made an statement of current electricity generation and distribution status in Myanmar. Total installed capacity of electricity generation mix is 7214.36 MW in Myanmar with 3228 MW from 29 hydropower stations, 3638.36 MW from 27 LNG power stations, 138 MW from 2 coal power stations and 210 MWp from 7 solar farms in Myanmar. You can see the generation sources ratio in bottom pie chart of the image. National Annual Demand Growth is 9% which is equaled to 5443 MW in required to supply the demand. However 5 hydro stations which are Shwegyin Hydro-75 MW, Balu Chaung Hydro (1)+(2)+(3)-248 MW and Thaphanseik Hydro-30 MW stopped electricity generation. Total reduction from hydropower generation is 353 MW. On the other hand, LNG installed capacity is 50% of total generation with 446 MW reduction in generation due to lack of natural gas availability. So total generation stopped is 799 MW less from 7214.36 MW. So the net installed capacity is 6415.36 MW in Myanmar. However the actual generation capacity is 2800 MW due to unforeseeable circumstances. Current electricity supply and distribution for Yangon Region is 46%, Mandalay Region is 16% and the rest of Myanmar is 38% from actual electricity generation mix. The electricity supply is based on groups to respective states and regions alternatively. From Feb 2021 to Apr 2024, MOEP disconnected over 400k meters and removed over 60k meters from end users due to unpaid electricity meter bills. To meet the demand growth, there are 6 commissioned solar farms with 180 MWp capacity across Myanmar until 2024. One more solar farm with 30 MWp at Thapyawa-3 was commissioned on 30th Mar 2024. So total solar installed capacity from 7 projects is 210 MWp. However due to the extreme summer weather, MOEP is doing load sheds more often after Matriculation Exam (19th Mar 2024 onwards). During summer, hydropower generation contribution is 40%, From Jun 2024, monsoon will start and hydropower will boost the generation. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is making significant progress with the recent delivery of the first batch of coated line pipes to Kyotera District, Uganda. This marks a critical step toward the construction and operationalization of the pipeline, which will transport crude oil from Uganda's Albertine Basin to Tanzania's Tanga port. The pipes were received by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd (CPP), the project's construction contractor, signaling the beginning of pipeline installation in Uganda. This is a key milestone as developers aim to export the first barrels of crude oil by the end of next year. The 1,443-kilometer pipeline will span both Uganda and Tanzania, with 296 kilometers within Uganda being carbon-neutral, utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar and hydroelectric power for operations. The project, valued at $5 billion, is being developed by EACOP Company, with stakeholders including Uganda, Tanzania, TotalEnergies, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation Uganda Limited. In the heart of the Rift Valley, near Nakuru, northwest of Nairobi, work on the 105-megawatt Menengai #geothermal project is advancing rapidly. The first plant, built by Nairobi-based Sosian Energy, is already operational. The second, currently under construction by Globeleq, one of Africa’s top independent power producers, is expected to come on stream by the end of 2025. Once the third plant Is added, the Menengai geothermal facility will boast a total installed capacity of 105 megawatts, generating 1,000 gigawatt hours of #electricity annually. The Suki Kinari hydropower project, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) portfolio with an 884-megawatt capacity, has successfully commenced its wet testing phase. Located on the Kunhar River in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, northwestern Pakistan, the SK hydropower station is one of the prioritized projects under CPEC’s initial batch. It features four impulse units with a total installed capacity of 884 MW. Personnel from China Energy Construction Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., SK Hydro Co., Ltd., and various construction units witnessed this milestone on site. Representatives from local authorities and the project’s engineering team also attended the startup ceremony. Cheng Dan, general manager of China Energy Construction Overseas Investment Company Ltd., overseeing the project, informed Xinhua that the first unit has passed initial tests smoothly and meets design specifications. Further tests, including temperature stability and overspeed tests, are scheduled to ensure all technical parameters conform to standards. Unit 4 of SK Hydropower Station has successfully undergone initial tests, demonstrating smooth operation and compliance with design requirements. Subsequent tests, such as temperature stability and overspeed testing, will be conducted to ensure all technical standards are met, laying a solid foundation for the unit’s trial operation phase. Before the unit startup for wet testing, SK Hydro Co., Ltd., in collaboration with construction units, meticulously prepared protocols for water filling and discharge tests, monitored progress in real time, and efficiently resolved issues to ensure effective water management during testing, which is crucial for the success of the wet testing phase. Once completed, the project is expected to generate 3.212 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, significantly contributing to addressing Pakistan’s electricity shortfall. #SukiKinari #CPEC #Electricity
