About us

We turn human stories into extraordinary spaces, sparking new narratives and helping places evolve and thrive. We are Gillespies, a diverse, free-thinking team of landscape architects, landscape planners, masterplanners, and urban designers based in London, Oxford, Manchester, Leeds and Abu Dhabi. For over 60 years, we've designed with nature to create exceptional spaces where stories come to life and nature thrives. From intimate rooftop gardens to expansive city masterplans, we create unique settings that bring people together, offering unforgettable experiences and fostering a deep harmony between people and the environment. Our approach is context-driven and grounded in the principles of regenerative design. We draw inspiration from a site's natural assets, people, and culture to create authentic places with interconnected ecosystems that are both resilient and sustainable. The resulting places are personal. They’re the product of nature and people in balance and the setting for unique stories to unfold. Notable projects include Elephant Park, Television Centre in White City, Google HQ’s new rooftop garden and several large-scale international masterplans. All benefit from a global view: the team’s broad cultural perspective brings informed, unbiased creativity to even the most specific micro-ecology. Expertise: Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Masterplanning, Landscape Planning (LVIA, EIA, DCO, Expert Witness, Development Planning) and Wayfinding and Signage. Areas of Experience: Residential and mixed-use developments, garden community and growth strategies, high street regeneration, green regeneration, green spaces, parks and public realm design, sports facilities, hotel landscapes, campus design for education and healthcare centres, television studios, regional masterplans for tourism developments, rooftop gardens, winter gardens, energy and utility, airports, museum and civic landscapes.

I am greatly honoured to have been selected as an international judge for GBA Urban Design Awards. The objective of the Awards is to elevate the overall urban design standard in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and explore a mechanism for mutual recognition of professional qualifications in urban design in the Greater Bay Area through recognising excellence in urban design related projects in the GBA and fostering collaboration and exchange among urban designers, planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers, surveyors and other urban design professionals, companies and organisations in the GBA. The Awards Adjudication will take place in February 2025 and the results will be announced in March 2025. The Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held in March 2025 in Hong Kong. I am very much looking forward to reviewing the schemes with my fellow judges,  Ms. Siew Leng FUN, Chief Urban Designer, Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore and Ms. Gunnila KRONVALL, Owner, Atelier 01 arkitektur, Sweden. More details of the award programme and how to enter are listed on the website https://lnkd.in/dP83VF7M

  • The landmark Belfast Stories project has reached an exciting milestone with the launch of a 14-week public consultation, running until 23 February. The consultation will provide an opportunity for the public to shape the early concepts for this transformational £100m development, which will deliver a public space, visitor attraction and creative hub. Spearheaded by Belfast City Council, the project will breathe new life into the iconic Art Deco Bank of Ireland building on Royal Avenue, reimagining the surrounding 5,000m² site into a vibrant destination. With a rooftop park, urban events courtyard, and enhanced city streetscape, this world-class development is set to celebrate Belfast's unique heritage, culture, and community. We’re thrilled to be working alongside Snøhetta and TODD Architects Ltd. to deliver this groundbreaking project. Expected to open by 2030, Belfast Stories will aim to welcome over 700,000 visitors annually and create up to 1,200 jobs during construction and launch phases. 💬 Don’t miss your chance to share your feedback and help shape the future of Belfast! Explore the concept designs and have your say. https://lnkd.in/eQED8c67 Image courtesy of Belfast City Council and Snohetta.

  • This #NationalTreeWeek , we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Heart of the National Forest Vision—a bold and transformative plan to create a sustainable and vibrant 10-square-mile destination at the heart of the National Forest. The Heart of the National Forest has already experienced a remarkable transformation, evolving from a landscape with minimal tree cover to one where forests now thrive, covering 40% of the area. Building on this incredible progress, the new vision charts an ambitious course for the next 10 to 20 years, with a focus on sustainability, well-being, and strengthening community connections. Initially developed by Gillespies in collaboration with tourism experts BlueSail, and led by the The National Forest Company alongside North West Leicestershire District Council and Leicestershire County Council, the plan will transform the area between Swadlincote, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and Measham. The vision is guided by three core themes: Place, Experience, and Enterprise.  At its heart, the vision includes innovative projects such as re-opening the Ivanhoe Line for sustainable travel, creating a “Green Web” of cycling and walking routes, and restoring the Clay Stocking Yard with a new wild swimming and water sports lake. It also prioritises expanding woodlands, orchards, and wildlife habitats. Key investment sites include the Conkers Discovery Centre, Hicks Lodge Cycle Centre, Moira Furnace, and Albert Village Lake.  The vision emphasises building a thriving green economy through renewable energy initiatives, innovative business hubs, and a centre of excellence for forestry and sustainability. Education, research, and community engagement will empower residents and visitors to play an active role in safeguarding its future. This vision represents a shared commitment to demonstrate a more sustainable future —one where habitats are restored and reconnected, where people find inspiration in nature, and where green businesses can flourish. It has been a bit more than a year now since I joined the Croydon Design Review Panel as a Landscape Architect. An eye opening experience for me, allowing me time to learn and discover more about this incredible borough, its communities, its places, its natural networks but also its future aspirations. Next week's event - the "Fresh Perspectives" Develop Croydon Conference - promises to do more of that! Hope to see some of you there! #croydon #developcroydon #DCConf2024 #freshperspectives #greencities #gillespies
