In this month’s Green Watch, Corrina Jones MRICS provides a high-level overview of COP 29 and asks if COP is really any longer ‘fit for purpose.’ As Keir Starmer states, “There is no national security. There is no economic security. There is no global security. Without climate security”, the UK steps up to the mark and increases its commitment to reduce emissions by 81% by 2035. The RICS has published its 2024 Sustainability Report which identifies a lack of action on embodied carbon, a green skills gap, and low prioritisation of biodiversity across the built environment. The United Nations published its annual emissions gap report entitled ‘No more hot air please!’ which identifies that we are likely to see global temperature increases of 2.6 to 3.1 degrees over the next 75 years. In the world of sustainability reporting, the UK government has unveiled six key principles for corporate carbon credit use as the SBTi is lobbied to allow businesses to offset a higher percentage of Scope 3 emissions. As the UK prepares to adopt and integrate the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards in 2025, businesses are gearing up to prepare for a deluge of sustainability reporting requirements. Over half of businesses plan to boost governance for net-zero goals, including more investment and bigger legal/compliance teams. Barclays Bank has published a new report, ‘Boosting the energy efficiency of UK homes’ and Lloyds Bank has launched a new podcast with edie which explores the power of credible transition plans to drive positive climate action across businesses. The Green Finance Institute, in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest, have published ‘A green print for Property Linked Finance’ and Nationwide has added to their green borrowing range. And finally.. we provide some green tips on how to have a sustainable and very Merry Christmas! Our latest House Price Index revealed that average UK house prices rose by 0.2% in October. Business Development Director Richard Sexton shares some insight on what this means for prospective home buyers: "This month our data showed the average sale price of a home in England and Wales in October moved up to £354,800 – about £600 or 0.2% higher than in September – the first monthly rise in our index for six months and one that wiped out the fall of the previous month. Easing cost of living pressures, which have been helped this week by the cut in the Bank of England Base Rate, mean affordability will continue to improve as lenders’ standard variable rates follow suit."
