Having now had ample time to test various AI platforms and as we look forward to 2025, here's my take on some of the big claims being made around AI-powered search. 🔹 “𝘈𝘐-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘦” While AI has disrupted the digital status quo, that won’t necessarily translate into a major impact on Google’s hold on search. After all, we’ve seen various competitors like Bing and DuckDuckGo trying to remove Google’s crown and even after millions of dollars of investment, the impact hasn’t materialised. You might see some people announcing that they’ve totally replaced their Google searches with their favourite AI tool. But, as Rand Fishkin showed this week, the cross-platform share for ChatGPT isn’t likely more than 4-5% (even being generous) and the rising star Perplexity AI is even less than that. So, these claims aren’t reflecting the experience of those internet users. 💡𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Be sceptical of the radicals claiming they’ll never use Google and only search using AI from this point on. 🔹 “𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘐-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴” While schema and other technical SEO implementations don’t yet affect AI results, Google and AI platforms are powered by similar natural language processing systems. That means that if you’ve already optimised your page copy for Google’s BERT, then it will also be optimised for the new AI platforms. But what you can do now is to analyse how your copy is ‘seen’ by AI. This is something we’ll be doing for our clients in 2025 - AI Powered Content Audits. These will help employers understand if their brand is connected to their industry, so that they’ll be recommended as one of the employers of choice for prompts such as ‘best graduate employers in engineering’. These audits will also identify content gaps on our clients’ careers sites. Filling these gaps will get an employer’s brand associated with the entities and categories relevant to their recruitment areas. 💡𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: There are benefits to being able to ‘see through the eyes of AI’ to assess if your employer brand is being understood accurately, but the approach to getting mentioned by AI platforms remains the same as that one that already works for Google’s BERT. Tactics like these have helped many of our clients appeal to broader audiences. This allows them to source the right talent for apprentice and graduate programmes and meet skills shortages in areas like cyber and digital.
