About us

Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Our loved ones are living longer with illness or disability, and more and more of us are looking after them. Whether round-the-clock or for a few hours a week, in our own home or for someone at the other end of a motorway – caring can have a huge effect on us, our lives and our plans. Caring is such an important part of life. It’s simply part of being human. Carers are holding families together, enabling loved ones to get the most out of life, making an enormous contribution to society and saving the economy billions of pounds. Yet many of us are stretched to the limit – juggling care with work and family life, or even struggling with poor health ourselves. We often find it difficult to make ends meet if we’re unable to work or if we’ve reduced our working hours to care. Every day 6,000 people become carers. Many don’t know how or where to get help. It can be frightening and very lonely. For some it’s sudden: someone you love is taken ill or has an accident, your child is born with a disability. For others, caring creeps up unnoticed: your parents can’t manage on their own any longer, your partner’s health gets gradually worse. Looking after someone can be tough, but you’re not on your own. Carers UK is here to listen, to give you expert information and advice that’s tailored to your situation, to champion your rights and support you in finding new ways to manage at home, at work, or wherever you are. We’re here to make life better for carers. We give expert advice, information and support. We connect carers so no-one has to care alone. We campaign together for lasting change. We innovate to find new ways to reach and support carers.

Carers UK have a vision of a world where carers are recognised, valued and supported. However, that's only as effective as the brilliant people we have on that journey. With so much exciting work happening at the moment, we are looking to appoint two Trustees for Northern Ireland and Wales, to help us bring this vision to life. One week to go! ⏰ #CarerRightsDay is all about recognising your rights – and our aim is to help carers recognise and understand their rights, and to access the support available to them, whenever they need it. As a carer, knowing your rights empowers you with information about what you’re entitled to. This helps you feel confident asking for what you need, as well as challenging things when your rights are not being met – whether that be in the workplace or education, in accessing health or social care, or when interacting with other professionals or at home.

Virtual wards – also referred to as ‘hospital at home’ – allow patients to receive hospital-level care at home by using technology and equipment to allow healthcare teams to closely monitor patients and continue to support their care. This can help improve outcomes, however, without the right information and support, can lead to an increase in responsibility for carers. As part of the Carers Partnership through the Health and Wellbeing Alliance, we have worked with NHS England and unpaid carers to co-produce a new toolkit containing resources designed to ensure that unpaid carers are properly supported and treated as equal partners in care when asked to care for a family member or friend on a virtual ward. You can find the toolkit here: https://lnkd.in/ewSqH48d If you or someone you know has caring responsibilities please do share with your networks. If you have any questions about the resources we have developed or would like to share your experience of caring for someone on a virtual ward, please contact [email protected].

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the invaluable responses unpaid carers so generously give us. We always want to ensure our priorities are in the right place and that we are campaigning for what unpaid carers have told us they want. We have created a short survey in light of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan so that carers can share their specific views on what the future of the NHS should look like for unpaid carers with us. If you or someone you know has caring responsibilities please take some time to complete this survey or share with your networks https://lnkd.in/eBmJx79D

We want unpaid carers to have a strong voice in shaping the future of the NHS in England. This is vital to ensure that: ◾ The NHS 10 Year Health Plan clearly recognises the role of unpaid carers and ◾There are specific measures which would better recognise and support unpaid carers, both in their caring role and as patients needing support themselves. This is an opportunity for unpaid carers to reflect on their interactions with the NHS – whether that be hospital discharge, waiting times, community provision. If you or someone you know has caring responsibilities please take some time to complete this survey or share with your networks. https://lnkd.in/gu-7UCCv

“It’s fantastic to hear that the Government will increase the earnings threshold for Carer’s Allowance allowing 60,000 more carers juggling work and care to access this benefit. It’s the largest increase in the earnings limit for Carer’s Allowance since it was introduced in 1976.” - Helen Walker We are pleased that carers working and claiming Carer’s Allowance can now take on additional hours to earn up to £196 per week from April 2025, or over £10,000 a year. However, too many carers are still struggling with their finances despite providing so much for society. In addition to today’s announcement, we need to see a full review of Carer’s Allowance, as well of other carer benefits, to ensure these are adequate to support carers who are not able to combine their caring role with paid work.
