This week is #BefriendingWeek! 🎉
We’d like to shine a spotlight on Age UK’s #SeafarersGroupCalls – an incredible initiative proudly funded by The Seafarers’ Charity. This telephone friendship group is tailored for older people with a #maritime background, offering them a chance to connect, share stories, and build friendships—all from the comfort of their own home.
☎️ Seafarers Group Calls bring together retired seafarers and others connected to maritime, creating a welcoming space to ease feelings of isolation and loneliness. Each week, small groups of up to six, led by a trained volunteer, gather to share stories, reminisce about life at sea, and form new friendships. This service is open to anyone over 60 with a seafaring background, including members of the #MerchantNavy, Royal Navy, #RoyalMarines, #RoyalFleetAuxiliary, #WRENS, #fishers and even family members of those in the seafaring community.
Meet John, a retired seafarer from Norfolk who felt increasingly isolated after his family moved away. Through #SeafarersGroupCalls, he found renewed joy and connection, describing the group as “a life raft in stormy seas.” Read John’s story here 👇
