Think about the last time someone made a small comment or gesture that stuck with you. Maybe it felt like an insult wrapped in a compliment, or maybe it was a moment of unexpected encouragement that made your day better. These interactions, microaggressions and microaffirmations, have a ripple effect that can shape workplace culture in ways we don’t always recognize. What are Microaggressions? Microaggressions are subtle, often unintentional, comments or actions that dismiss or demean someone. They frequently come from stereotypes or assumptions about others. They’re not as obvious as outright discrimination but can be just as damaging over time. What Are Examples of Microaggressions? • Stereotyping questions: Asking someone, “Where are you really from?” implies they don’t belong. • Dismissing ideas: Interrupting or ignoring someone’s contributions during a meeting. • Backhanded compliments: Saying, “You’re so articulate for your age” undermines their ability. The Impact of Microaggressions: Microaggressions may seem minor in isolation, but their cumulative effect can lead to: • Increased stress and anxiety • A sense of exclusion or isolation • Lower confidence and productivity • Higher turnover rates in workplaces Continue reading👇🏾: https://lnkd.in/d9YSjrUb #blackwomaninhr #networking #leadership #empowerment #humanresources #blackexcellence #inclusion #diversity #equality

The modern woman juggles a multitude of roles – career professional, caregiver, partner, friend – and sometimes, the relentless pursuit of productivity can take its toll. Burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged or excessive stress, is a growing concern for women. But how do you recognize its signs, and more importantly, how do you prevent it from taking over your life? Burnout doesn’t arrive overnight. It creeps in subtly, often disguised as “just feeling busy.” Here are some key warning signs to watch out for: • Emotional Exhaustion: You feel constantly drained and emotionally numb. Even small tasks feel overwhelming. • Cynicism and Detachment: You lose enthusiasm for your work and feel increasingly negative or cynical about your job. • Reduced Sense of Accomplishment: Despite your efforts, you feel a lack of accomplishment and constant self-doubt. • Physical Symptoms: Headaches, fatigue, muscle tension, changes in sleep patterns, and weakened immunity can be signs of burnout. • Changes in Work Habits: You might start slacking off, procrastinating, or making more mistakes at work. • Withdrawal from Social Life: The idea of socializing becomes exhausting, and you isolate yourself from loved ones. The good news is that burnout can be prevented. Here are some proactive steps you can take: • Set Boundaries: Learn to say no. Prioritize your well-being and delegate tasks whenever possible. Don’t let your work life bleed into your personal time. Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur, a seasoned business owner juggling multiple roles, the ability to get more done in less time can significantly impact your achievements. But how do you go from feeling overwhelmed and overworked to doubling your productivity in just one week? It’s not as impossible as it sounds. With the right strategies and mindset, you can transform the way you work and achieve more than you ever thought possible. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get there. Day 1: Setting the Stage for Success 1.1 Define Your Goals Before you can increase your productivity, you need to know what you’re aiming for. Start by defining your short-term and long-term goals. What do you want to achieve by the end of the week? Write down specific, measurable objectives. This clarity will guide your actions and help you stay focused. 1.2 Prioritize Your Tasks Not all tasks are created equal. Some will have a greater impact on your goals than others. Use the ABCD Matrix to categorize your tasks into four quadrants: 1. Urgent and Important (or Connected To Money): Do these tasks first. 2. Important but Not Urgent: Schedule these tasks. 3. Urgent but Not Important: Delegate these tasks if possible. 4. Neither Urgent nor Important: Consider eliminating these tasks. 1.3 Plan Each Day Spend some time planning your day the night before to help your week go smoothly. Allocate time blocks for your high-priority tasks and stick to this schedule as closely as possible. Planning ahead reduces decision fatigue and helps you stay on track. When I first stepped onto Ohio Dominican University’s campus for my first class, entrepreneurship was the furthest thing from my mind. I had no idea how to start a business or even that it was possible for someone like me. I was raised by a single mother; my father is incarcerated and has been most of my life, and at that time, no one in my immediate family had graduated from college. Fast-forward 14 years. I’m a college graduate, wife, and mother, and I have a 10-year-old business (5+ years of entrepreneurship). Although I am a huge advocate for establishing a digital presence, I can admit that most of my clients have come through referrals. Yes, my digital presence helped to seal the deal on contracts. However, when people were told by someone they trusted, “You should work with Tonnisha!” That held more weight than an Instagram post ever could. Are you familiar with the “scarcity mindset?” According to Google’s AI, “Having a scarcity mindset is a way of thinking that's characterized by the belief that resources are limited and that you can't have everything you want. People with a scarcity mindset are often preoccupied with what they lack, leading to chronic worry and fear. When it comes to our business, we must remove scarcity from our way of thinking and take people with us as we grow. The holiday season is a joyful time, but it can also bring a lot of stress and pressure, making it challenging to stay mindful of our health. For many women balancing work, family, social events, and personal goals, it's easy to feel overwhelmed or stretched thin. Taking care of your body and mind during this time is crucial to enjoy the season fully and stay grounded. Here’s how to prioritize your wellness over the holidays. 1. Create a Personal Health Routine (And Stick to It) A regular routine can be a powerful tool to stay balanced. Even when holiday events change your schedule, aim to keep a few consistent self-care habits, whether it’s morning stretching, an evening skincare routine, or a quiet cup of tea before bed. 2. Practice Mindful Eating With all the delicious food around, it can be tempting to indulge non-stop, leading to sluggishness or digestive issues. Instead, try to eat mindfully, savoring each bite without feeling pressured to overeat. Mindful eating isn’t about restriction but about appreciating your food without guilt. Picture a 12-year-old Black girl. What does she look like? Is she smiling, is she laughing, is she playing? Is she angry, does she have an attitude? Is she...a problem? Finally, ask yourself this: is she a child to you? In my role as a therapeutic practitioner I see Black girls every day. Young people are referred to me through various systems – often the education and justice systems - and I engage with them on but mainly offsite. This can be anything from group workshops to doing something as seemingly trivial as getting our hair done together. I will talk to them, I will listen. I have personally worked with well over 150 Black girls who have been deemed ‘difficult’ or ‘problematic’ – often who have been excluded, suspended or sometimes just removed from classes in their schools. I see this again, and again in my work the fact that Black Caribbean girls are twice as likely to be excluded from schools as their white counterparts, with this exclusion rate rising by 66 per cent over the last five years according to research done by the charity collective Agenda. But why is this happening? A County Tyrone woman named in the BBC’s 100 Women 2024 list has said it is an “honour” to represent women with alopecia. Olivia McVeigh, who began losing her hair when she was 17, uses social media platforms to raise awareness and to connect with other people living with the condition. "I used to think that when people found out I had alopecia, they would think I was weird, but for me now it is my favourite thing to tell people,” she said. “I talk about my hair loss every day on TikTok and Instagram." Olivia, who originally trained as a make-up artist, told BBC News NI that wearing a wig is now part of her identity. "I realised I was losing my hair when I was 17, I actually realised at my school formal," she said. "I remember looking at myself in the bathroom and being like ‘I can see through my hair’ but I didn’t really think too much of it." At the time, Olivia put the thinning of her hair down to the stress of A-Levels. However, aged 21 she began balding and started thinking about wigs. "All those little milestones in you life, I started having to think of myself doing that wearing a wig," she said. "It doesn’t sound like a big deal to most people but I think once you go through it you understand how much of an impact it has on you." “We won’t be needing you anymore.” I remember the call as if it were yesterday. My editor phoned me early on a Monday morning in 2005 to break the news. Her voice was cold, emotionless, matter-of-fact. “I don’t understand,” I replied to the bombshell she dropped. “I’ve been writing several articles a month. I’m on contract!” That amounted to a decent income I counted on since leaving a full-time job to raise my then 3-year-old. What would I tell my husband? How could I find another steady gig on such short notice? I had private nursery school to pay for, clothes and shoes to buy for a growing toddler. How could she do this to me? I expected an apology — or at least an explanation — for my abrupt dismissal, but never got one. In fact, two of my articles were immediately reassigned, and my dismissal was announced to coworkers, who sent sympathy emails. It was brutal. This woman wasn’t just my boss; we had gone out for drinks and dinners multiple times, and she had come to my baby shower. I couldn’t wrap my brain around how she could be so heartless and cruel — and frankly, I never forgot it. We all have those moments. You meet someone who seems to have it all together, and you think, “Wow, that person is so much better than me.” Suddenly, you feel small, insecure, second-rate. It's an awful feeling, isn't it? But here's the secret: you're not alone. We all struggle with comparing ourselves to others now and then. And the good news is there are simple, effective ways to handle those “people better than me” thoughts when they sneak up on you. Why Does It Seem Everyone Is Better Than Me? It's an all-too-familiar feeling—scrolling through social media or talking to an impressive friend and suddenly being hit with pangs of insecurity. You start questioning yourself, wondering why others seem to have it so much more together. Where does that nagging “everyone is better than me” feeling come from? A few key culprits to consider: • Social media We just see the exciting snippets of people's lives, not the full picture. Makes their realities look perfect! •Comparing your behind-the-scenes to others' highlight reels. But remember—they do the same messy, human stuff we all do! •Focusing on what you lack versus your strengths. Our brains tend to zero in on perceived weaknesses.
