On Tuesday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Race and Policing UK event hosted by Bell Ribeiro-Addy at the Houses of Parliament. It was an enlightening and powerful experience, bringing together some of the most influential voices in the field. The event featured thought-provoking discussions from esteemed speakers including Andrew George, Nusrit Mehtab, Coretta Hine, Nicholas Sensley, and of course, the inspiring Lawrence Davies LLM. Each speaker brought unique insights and perspectives, shedding light on the critical issues of race and policing in the UK. While I left London feeling disappointed and somewhat dejected by the challenges highlighted by the panellists and the room, a meeting today with Warwickshire Police Sukhvinder Singh Chohan and Gill Wall MBPsS gave me renewed hope. It reminded me of the crucial need for senior leaders who are brave, courageous, and willing to do the unpopular work to make the Police for a fair and equal place for everyone, both inside and outside the organisation. I realised that with my expertise, I can contribute to making meaningful change and moving the dial. We can't just give up—the next generation needs us to keep pushing for meaningful change and ensure a fairer, more just society for all. #RaceAndPolicing #UKParliament #CommunityEngagement #InclusiveRecruitment #SocialJustice #SeniorLeadership #representationmatters #diversityandinclusion

On Monday I had the privilege of attending UK House of Lords for the launch of Dr Jummy Okoya PhD, FRSA, FCMI, SFHEA, MCIPD, ICF (PCC) and Professor Jonathan Passmore's pioneering research into the challenges of Black academics in University Business Schools. Their report Creating Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Higher Education," sheds light on the systemic barriers and offers actionable solutions to foster a more inclusive academic environment. As someone who is deeply invested in the advancement of Black professionals, I found the presentation of this report particularly resonant. The lack of Black senior leadership in academia is a pressing issue that I've observed firsthand and have discussed in great depth with many Black professionals in my network from Higher Education. Jummy and Jonathan's work is a call to action for institutions to bridge the gap between Black academics and their peers, the report highlights the underrepresentation of Black academics in professorship roles and its impact on curriculum diversity, leadership, and student experiences. Their proposed BRIDGE framework—Building Recognisable Inclusiveness, Diverse Growth, and Equity—advocates for transparent promotion criteria, inclusive leadership, and tailored career programmes which I am all for! The event hosted by Lord Simon Woolley and compere Dr Nero Ughwujabo was a powerful reminder of the importance of equity and inclusion in higher education. It was inspiring to see leaders from various institutions from all over the UK come together to discuss and commit to creating genuine change. Kudos to Dr Jummy for her dedication to this crucial cause whilst navigating the barriers she has faced . It will take us all to join the journey to create more diverse and inclusive academic environments where everyone can succeed. 📚 It was also a pleasure to see Black Talent Awards Judges Dr Heather Melville, OBE, CMgr, CCMI and Bernadette T. ❤🙏🏾 #HigherEducation #Diversity #Inclusion #BlackAcademics #Equity #Research #blackprofessors

I'm spending a few days in London and will share more soon, but this absolutely deserves its own post. There's a saying, "Never meet your heroes," but last night, I had the honour of meeting one of mine - one of the first things he said when addressing the room at the House of Lords was "mi casa es su casa" Lord Simon Woolley, it was a pleasure to meet you. Your work as a Lord, politician, activist, Principal of Homerton College, philanthropist, and founder of Operation Black Vote is truly inspiring, but for me, it's your genuine care for the community and the next generation of talent and it is evident in everything you do. 🙏🏾❤️ I look forward to continuing our discussion about The Black Talent Awards.

Whilst there is no specific data that highlights ethnicity within this, we know that Black and other racialised communities are more likely to experience a mental health challenge, but also the least likely to receive support. We know first hand from our work at Black Minds Matter UK just how urgently support is needed that is accessible but also culturally competent. This article highlights the increasing emergency which is the mental health crisis and the desperate need for this to be addressed. The recent Mental Health bill looks like a step in the right direction. There really is no time to waste. Embracing the Power of Sharing Our Stories Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to share my personal story at CREME 's 28th year celebration dinner, thank you to Monder Ram for the kind invitation and wonderful introduction 🙏🏾❤ , sharing the floor with Jabbar Khan, 🌶️ Sanjay Aggarwal, Professor Aleks Subic and David Hall FRSA was a pleasure. Why Sharing Matters: Sharing our stories is more than just recounting events from our lives. It's about connecting with others on a deeper level, fostering empathy, and creating a sense of community. When we open up about our journeys, we not only heal ourselves but also inspire and empower those around us. My Journey: For me, sharing my story has been a journey of healing and empowerment. It has allowed me to reflect on my experiences, embrace my strengths, and acknowledge the challenges I've overcome. By being vulnerable and authentic, I've found a renewed sense of purpose and connection with others. Your Story Matters Too: I encourage everyone to share their own stories. Each of us has a unique narrative that can offer valuable insights and inspiration. Your story matters, and it has the power to make a difference in someone else's life. Thank You: A big thank you to everyone who attended the event and those who tagged me in your posts. Your presence and encouragement mean alot. Let's continue to uplift and support each other as we navigate our individual journeys. If you're looking for someone to share insights on personal growth and empowerment at your next event, feel free to reach out. I'd love to connect and explore how we can inspire others together. #ShareYourStory #Inspiration #DeniseMyers #creme28 #PersonalGrowth #LifeLessons #LinkedInCommunity #representationmatters 📸 Edwin Ladd

October has been a whirlwind of #reclaimingnarratives, taking stock, strategizing, and making some tough decisions. It’s been a month of highs and lows, celebration and reflection. Publicly, it’s been fabulous, but privately, it’s been challenging. First and foremost, thank you all for your unwavering support. It has been vital in carrying me through this time. Never underestimate the power of a trusted network 🙏🏾❤. We kicked off the month with a bang! The Black Talent Awards was an incredible success, a night of 600 stars 🌟. Every single person who attended, worked behind the scenes, judged, sponsored, or was part of the team, nominees, finalists, and winners – you are all stars. Next, I had the pleasure of attending my first UK Black Business Show opening event. It was fantastic to network and celebrate with peers, colleagues, and friends, all surrounded by such positive energy. I was also honored to be invited by my friends at Birmingham City University to witness The Passing of the Baton ceremony. What a fabulous experience that was! Finally, my last event of the month was at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole for the #BlackHistoryMonth Reclaiming Narratives event. It was a pleasure to network and meet new people like Malachi Nunes, Colleen W., and Jay. Thank you, Charlotte, for the opportunity. As we move into November, let’s continue to support and uplift each other. Stay connected, stay inspired, and let’s make the next month even more impactful. If you have any upcoming events or initiatives, feel free to share them with me. Together, we can achieve great things Bring on November! #blackhistorymonth #stayconnected #keepinspiring

  • Akil Hunte is a purpose-driven lawyer who uses his skills to uplift the community. As chair of NRG Lawyers, he empowers non-Russell group graduates to thrive in the legal profession. More than his achievements, it's his unwavering commitment to collective progress that makes him truly remarkable. His journey, work and character stood out to the judges and they were delighted to award him the 2024 Black Talent Award for Professional Services, Legal and Accounting! It's a privilege to celebrate an extraordinary individual who embodies purpose and deserves this honour.

Last night, someone told me, "Birmingham City University doesn't do boring." They were absolutely right. It was a pleasure to spend the evening with the incredible people of Birmingham. In true style, Sir Lenny Henry passed the baton to Ade Adepitan. Both speeches were phenomenal, but Ade's words struck a chord. When he asked Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA, and Anita Bhalla why they chose him, their response was simple yet profound: "Because you are different." ❤ Reflecting on this, I thought about my work in recruitment. How refreshing it would be to hear employers say, "Yes, I want to offer this candidate the role because they are different, because they bring a unique perspective and push boundaries," rather than sticking to the same old criteria. Thank you, BCU, for being a beacon of diversity in the West Midlands and a valued sponsor of The Black Talent Awards. The future looks bright! It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones: Sheryl Miller, Pat Carvalho, Henrietta Brealey, Julie Stonall Imogeen Denton Javid Kika Sal Naseem FRSA Jean Templeton Harshal Srivastava Brandon Relph Diane Kemp
