Civic and Social Organizations

Engaging men and boys in workplaces, universities and schools so that they can rethink masculinities and create change.

About us

When it comes to talking about gender inequality at work, more often than not, men are not seen as part of the solution. But the gender pay gap, workplace sexual harassment, maternity discrimination, and unfair hiring & promotion practices will not be overcome by women simply trying harder nor by women “leaning in”. Men must be part of this change. But how? Engaging men in conversations about gender equality can seem daunting - there are lots of potential crossed-wires, insensitivities and awkward language that can make it feel like it’s too much of a minefield to be worth taking on in the first place. And often men don’t see the ways that they too can significantly benefit from more equal and inclusive workplaces. We know that half of the battle is getting past men feeling defensive or like masculinity is under attack. That’s where we come in. --- Beyond Equality runs equality, inclusion and masculinites workshops with men and boys in schools, universities and workplaces.

How many men are looking for the chance to talk? How much would change, for them, their families and our society, if we opened these spaces? Highlights from a Beyond Equality mini-conference exploring the powerful work being done in the UK and abroad to open up spaces for men to support each other as they process emotions, heal and help create safer and more supportive communities. With a special guest keynote from Aotearoa (New Zealand), She Is Not Your Rehab, discussed their powerful work running men's groups, creating space where men can process trauma, and be part of healing intergenerational cycles of violence. 📽 Featuring Dr Daniel Guinness (Beyond Equality), Matteo & Sarah Brown (She Is Not Your Rehab), Dr Sanah Ahsan & Alex Holmes. We are doing the work. Let’s step into 2025 with renewed determination and a shared belief: 💡 Gender equality is achievable when men and boys are meaningfully engaged. 💡 Challenging outdated ideas of masculinity can lead to greater purpose, fulfillment, and happiness. 💡 Men and boys can—and should—be allies for women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and broader social justice.

There are of course many voices sharing their thoughts and feelings on the Gisèle mass rape trial outcomes today. As woman that works at the centre of a sector that works with men and boys on the topic of gender equality, healthy relationships, inclusion and VAWG prevention it’s naturally been a case that has engaged me on a personal and professional level. As I look back on a year of work with Beyond Equality I want to share a clip from this panel event where I talk about the behind the scenes of what it means to do this work with men in workplaces. - The overwhelming majority of people who enquire about our work are women. - Women, despite all of the inequalities they face continue to be the biggest advocates of men getting to do supportive, educative and caring work for themselves and by extension others. - Despite the horrid noise online and in mainstream media about how divisive these topics are, there are solutions. They are working. We are leading them. I feel a great sense of pride and an enormous feeling of responsibility to best translate the work that Beyond Equality does for and with men and boys and this past year we have produced more data, more content and can bring more people into this space than ever. I sincerely look forward to sharing that with you in 2025. My hope, is that our work grows (because it’s literally my job) because I want to share the opportunities that sit on the side of transformational change. I want to see more men engage and enquire and take the step to say ‘we don’t want or do that here, and we’re going to do something about it.’ Thank you to all of our clients, partners, workshop participants, advocates and wider community for all you have done and supported and nurtured. See you in 2025. Daniel Guinness, PhD Ben Hurst Rosephine Fernandes Jayne Ashby MCDI Hanaé Berton and the rest of the Beyond Equality team, thank you to you too.

  • As 2024 comes to a close, we’re excited to share a video spotlighting some of the incredible voices behind the #HowToTalkWithMen campaign by MenEngage Alliance—including a contribution from Daniel Guinness, PhD Guinness. The #HowToTalkWithMen campaign is powered by stories like Dan’s and many others that we see in Beyond Equality's work everyday—individuals who work tirelessly to engage men and boys as allies and agents of change for gender equality. Looking ahead to 2025, the challenge remains: finding new and impactful ways to invite men and boys into conversations about gender equity and social justice. We hope the insights shared by Dan and the other voices in this campaign inspire fresh ideas and action. Together, let’s step into 2025 with renewed determination and a shared belief: 💡 Gender equality is achievable when men and boys are meaningfully engaged. 💡 Challenging outdated ideas of masculinity can lead to greater purpose, fulfillment, and happiness. 💡 Men and boys can—and should—be allies for women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and broader social justice. Let’s make 2025 a year of bold action and lasting impact. 🎥 You can watch the whole video here: https://lnkd.in/exVJz-Xz

Online hate and harassment towards women is rising, driven by extremist influencers and manosphere groups weaponising phrases like "your body, my choice." Platforms like X, TikTok, and Reddit amplify misogynistic content, which often escalates to real-world threats, silencing women's voices. Political events and cultural shifts worsen this issue, highlighting the urgent need for digital and societal change to counter such harmful narratives. Masculinities Educator, Gender Equality Activist, Facilitator, Trainer, Public Speaker. IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER.

I really got a lot from delivering 2 x workshops for Beyond Equality on Anti-Misogyny & Anti-Sexism at at the EFL (English Football League) Together Education Conference, hosted at Preston North End FC last month. On the back of International Men's Day (yep, November 19th), and during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, it was a chance to work with a room full of 'changemakers' from clubs across the EFL, including Player Care Staff, Safeguarding Leads, and Heads of EDI. Together we explored strategies to challenge and reduce gender-based discrimination within football and explored practical approaches for fostering inclusivity and respect, with the aim of creating a safer environment for everyone involved in the game. When it comes to Anti-Misogyny and Anti-Sexism work, change is not aspirational, it is achievable. But is won't happen quickly, or without the engagement of men and boys. So, it's inspiring to see that football - which is so deeply rooted in community, identity, and social justice in this country - is determined to play a key role in driving it forward. To quote many a football fan, manager, or player: "trust the process".

  • The Marie Claire article discusses the pervasive issue of online misogyny - which we've seen in all our workshops this year from schools to workplaces to universities - using Andrew Tate as a case study to highlight how harmful ideologies gain traction through media and societal normalisation. It interesting points out how the media portrays figures like Tate as "controversial" rather than condemning their misogynistic and violent ideologies. At Beyond Equality we believe that in order to change something we should be able to name it. Activist Laura Bates emphasises the urgent need for systemic change, including reforms to the Online Safety Bill, to address these cultural failures and protect women. Beyond Equality is at the forefront of addressing these issues by redefining masculinity and engaging men in meaningful dialogue about gender equality. Ben Hurst, our head of facilitation talks about how our work aims to challenge harmful ideas of masculinity and inspire young men to take active roles in creating safer, more respectful communities. This proactive approach is critical in countering the influence of harmful figures and fostering a culture where equality and empathy prevail. Through education and engagement, Beyond Equality provide a powerful antidote to the normalisation of misogyny, working to build a future where narratives of respect and accountability replace those of harm and division. https://lnkd.in/ef8-Dban

Men's role in Challenging Violence and Changing Narratives 'We, as all men, need to really be attentive to those moments where we can call out and challenge and change those attitudes to women and change those ideas about what it is to be a man in our society. Because it's only if we can really get o that root and dismantle that whole spectrum of violence that we're going to be able to prevent, prevent the violence that's occurring here.' This is a clip of Daniel Guinness, PhD on the panel for the 16 Days of Activism Event with UN women UK.

🌟 How do you start a conversation with men about gender? 🌟 Daniel Guinness, PhD, Managing Director at Beyond Equality, shares his approach in this thought-provoking video for the #HowToTalkWithMen campaign: 🗣️ “Start by having conversations about what’s relevant to men’s lives. Men are deeply impacted by gender norms—in their relationships, roles, and workplaces. Talking about topics like fatherhood or workplace dynamics helps men connect personally to gender equality, creating space for bigger conversations about societal norms and how they affect women, girls, and marginalized genders.” Watch the video to hear more from Dan and join the conversation. 🌍 Discover more about the #HowToTalkWithMen campaign: https://lnkd.in/e484Knqm #GenderEquality #MenForChange #MenAndMasculinities
