“I wanted to be part of something collaborative and ambitious and determined to make a difference.” Welcome to Meet our Members! This month, we’d like to introduce you to Kate. Kate Abbey is a Festival Director and set up the social enterprise organisation, Bath Arts Collective, that develops and delivers a vibrant and varied arts and culture programme across Bath and North East Somerset and the organisation also has their own event – Curious Minds Festival. Passionate about making culture and cultural events accessible, diverse and inclusive, Kate wants to support projects that create opportunities for young people and women who have taken career breaks, to thrive in this city. Kate joined Bath Women’s Fund as there are so many brilliant women across Bath and North East Somerset and she wanted to find out about new projects and initiatives and to learn how we might all collaborate together. A collective response to local needs - because together our giving makes a bigger difference.
About us
Bath Women’s Fund is a new approach to philanthropy in Bath and the surrounding area, which launched in 2018. Women who live or work in and around Bath are invited to join this thriving giving circle and collaborate with others interested in collective giving. Giving Circles operate around the world. They work by pooling members' resources and giving to good causes. Using this approach for the Bath Women’s Fund will mean that members : • connect more directly with local charities; • learn about local issues; • share the joy of giving; and • get involved more deeply in philanthropy and how funds are allocated to achieve the greatest impact. Giving Circles are also about having fun and bringing together socially-aware women from a wide range of backgrounds. Bath Women’s Fund is run by a small group of volunteers who work in the charitable and philanthropic sector. We decided to set up Bath Women’s Fund because, as the thousands of women’s giving circles around the world demonstrate, this is an initiative that works particularly well for women who want to come together and get involved in something a bit different. Bath Women’s Fund is a Giving Circle and over the past five years we have collectively given to local organisations that support women and girls. But how do Giving Circles work? Each month our members donate £25 (or £20 plus Gift Aid) or more if they wish. These donations are pooled and held securely, then at the end of the year 100% of the funds are awarded in grants to local groups. Our members decide how the pooled funds are allocated to make the biggest impact at an awards evening. Grant payments are then made directly to the selected organisations. Since our launch in October 2019, we are proud to have given £100,000 to 14 local organisations. People join a giving circle because they want to make a difference, connect with others, learn and have fun, but it is also an opportunity to get involved with philanthropy and the grant making process. If you are interested in finding out more about Giving Circles, philanthropy and Bath Women’s Fund, visit our website or come along to one of our events. https://lnkd.in/eTQRTax #FiveYearsOfGiving #BathWomensFund #Philanthropy #GivingCircles #JoinBathWomensFund #Community

Bath in Common event at Widcombe Social Club on Thursday 21st November - "an evening of reflection, collaboration and joy" facilitated by Nadia Idle. What does Bath now need to thrive? Bath is full of activity, passionate campaigns and active residents. But what does it need at this conjuncture? How can we build trust between communities, fight atomisation and open spaces for sustainable activism? This reflective workshop will hold a space to contemplate this moment and what the living organism that is Bath - needs right now. We will use consciousness raising techniques and a series of collaborative exercises to encourage free and open thinking. https://lnkd.in/eBUFRf6q

How much do you know about Giving Circles? People have been coming together to give collectively for centuries and in the past 20 years Giving Circles around the world have given over £1billion. Giving Circles come in all shapes and sizes, involving people from a wide range of backgrounds. They are a long-established approach to collective giving where people come together to pool their resources so that their combined gifts can make a bigger difference. This beautifully illustrated website, from our friends at Philanthropy Together, simply explains how collective giving and people-powered philanthropy can transform communities and support proactive change – https://lnkd.in/dDHDX-v. It’s also worth watching the inspirational TED talk from Sara Lomelin, CEO of Philanthropy Together, showing how powerful it is to come together, build and belong to a community with shared values, learn about the issues in your local area and collectively decide which grass roots organisations would benefit most from the pooled donations – https://shorturl.at/QouKT People join a Giving Circle because they want to make a difference. Bath Women’s Fund is part of a growing, global movement of Giving Circles, so if you are looking for connection, collaboration, purpose and fun, then come and join us – our next event is on 9th December and we’ll be celebrating five years of giving! #FiveYearsOfGiving #BathWomensFund #Philanthropy #GivingCircles #JoinBathWomensFund #Community

Such an honour to watch HIJABI hosted by FilmBath, The Belonging Network and Helen Farmer, followed by a powerful Q&A and conversation between the film's Director and Producer, Samir Mehanovic, Tara Miran and Dr Norah El-Gohary BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, PGCE, AFHEA, who also shared some of their personal experiences to help us all to learn and have #FrankConversations. The film shares the voices and stories of five Muslim women who give such powerful insight into the hatred they have experienced and the work they're doing to challenge and support others. Thank you for bringing this film to Bath, particularly as part of Islamophobia Awareness Month. Resources available at: https://lnkd.in/ef6Aqh9D Please seek out this film - next screening in Manchester on 16th November: https://lnkd.in/e2_DSGBE.
