This week is our major fundraising campaign of the year, and all donations are doubled thanks to the amazing #BigGiveChristmasChallenge This year we are aiming to raise £58,000 - a huge target for us! If you like what we do and think there should be more inspiring creative workshops for people affected by dementia, please consider supporting us, or sharing this and spreading the word! You can donate here: https://bit.ly/AforD-TBG24 Your contribution will make a very real difference to the many people living with early-stage dementia and, equally important, their partners or companions, who enjoy our weekly arts programmes. Whatever you are able to give will help to further our work - and for one week only, it will have double the impact. Thanks to last year’s Big Give… We have continued our year-round creative programme in Southwark, with our participants enjoying 10-week ‘terms’ of ceramics, textiles, experimental drawing and even dancing led by the English National Ballet! We have also recruited a new person to support our workshop delivery and community outreach work, enabling us to start another year-round programme at Swiss Cottage Library in Camden, which began with print-making. Alongside our community-based work we are delighted to have regular partnerships of short-term programmes with Central Saint Martins School of Art (their students got people making musical instruments as well as music this year), the Royal Collection (we went to Buckingham Palace for 4 weeks this summer, exploring the State Rooms), and Cockpit Studios (where their craftspeople shared a range of artforms including mosaic-making, textiles, and silver-smithing). Thank you. (And here's that donation link once more: https://bit.ly/AforD-TBG24)

I was delighted to support the successful application to Alzheimer's Society for the Doctoral Training Centre for Integrated Care at Queen Mary University of London, and my team Arts for Dementia look forward working with Prof Nathan Davies and Prof Claudia Cooper. #dementia
We're delighted to announce that the Alzheimer's Society has awarded £3.1million to fund a Doctoral Training Centre based at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health (QMUL). The Alzheimer’s Society Doctoral Training Centre for Integrated Care is one of only three new Doctoral Training Centres in the country. The project, funded by a £9 million grant, is led by Queen Mary University of London, the The University of Manchester, and Newcastle University. Based at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, the Queen Mary Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) will be led by Professors Nathan Davies and Claudia Cooper. It will host 29 PhD students over five years, who will explore how to deliver high-quality joined-up care from diagnosis to end of life. In addition to the support and guidance provided by researchers at Queen Mary, the students will have access to professionals from the NHS and social care, policy makers, and people with personal experience of dementia. Only one in five dementia PhD students currently stay in dementia research, often due to underfunding and the challenging nature of academic careers. The Alzheimer’s Society hopes that the new Doctoral Training Centres will create a supportive network, encouraging people to enter the field of dementia research and enabling PhD students to widen their options for peer support, networking, knowledge sharing, training, and equipment, and to continue their careers in dementia research. Co-Leads, Professors Nathan Davies and Claudia Cooper said: “This is a fantastic opportunity, not only to create amazing work that changes the lives of so many people, but also to create, nurture and develop the next generation of dementia researchers, and the field of dementia research itself. For students, being part of our DTC means joining a dynamic academic community, where they are not just learners, but active contributors to cutting-edge research. They will be immersed in an environment where collaboration with fellow students and world-renowned experts fuels intellectual growth and innovation. Importantly students will work in partnership throughout their doctoral studies with people living with dementia and carers which will help shape their pioneering research.” #Alzheimers #dementia #research

Yesterday we were on the 6.30pm BBC London news, featuring in a piece about adult social care and the demands on carers. Our Treehouse programme was filmed by them last week, capturing some of the creative drawing participants were doing, and interviewing some of our participants, including Richard - pictured with his wife Wendy. It was great to be part of raising awareness of such an important issue. You can read a BBC London online news article on the same subject here: https://lnkd.in/eMaWPDhJ

Sometimes there is no stopping our participants once they are in the creative flow. Here is another floor gallery.. we are getting quite used to them! These were all created in one session at our Treehouse project in Elephant Park, Southwark. #creativehealth #dementia
