Figures revealed by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) show that 55% of UK adults have had their data lost or stolen. 30% of those adults have experienced emotional destress as a result, but only 5% of those say they received support from the organisation responsible. The ICO are therefore urging organisations to recognise the real-world impact of data breaches and the devasting effects they can have on people's lives and emotional wellbeing. Earlier this week the Data (Use and Access) Bill was introduced in Parliament. The Bill is said to cut red tape for businesses and public sectors organisations like the NHS by making data sharing easier. The Information Commissioner's Office have since released a statement highlighting the fact that it is "an important piece of legislation" which will allow the ICO to continue to operate as a "trusted, fair and independent regulator", as well providing "certainty for all organisations as they innovate and promote the UK economy." #data #dataprotction #partliamentarybills #bill #parliament #ICO #regulator #law #legislation

Is catfishing a violation of GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018? At first glance, it would appear so. Catfishing involves the misuse of photos with people’s faces and other personal data in order to pretend to be other people. This is clearly a violation, but... who are the victims? It is usually clear that the person whose images have been stolen are the real victims. But often, those who feel the harshest impact from the misuse of data are those who are catfished. Are they not also victims of this type of breach of data? Currently, there is no clear answer regarding the liability of the violator to the catfished victim. This new documentary sheds some light on how the law already fails to address this type of behaviour from a criminal standpoint.
