The Governing Body for Angling in England
About us
Fishing is one of the country’s largest participation sports and the benefits of angling have never been more widely recognised—the Angling Trust is the national governing body for the sport of angling in England as well as a leading environmental NGO, representing anglers and creating opportunities for all to experience fishing in a healthy aquatic world. The Angling Trust has established itself as a leading voice in the protection and enhancement of the aquatic environment—we work across saltwater and freshwater environments alongside other leading partner NGOs as well as Fish Legal, our sister organisation, in advocating greater environmental protection, lobbying for positive change, and influencing political and NGO stakeholders in developing policy. We are leading members of the End Sewage coalition and across the past 70+ years, anglers have done more to raise awareness of the mistreatment of our waterways and practically seek to improve habitats and ecosystems than almost any other stakeholder group. In the past 12 months, we have introduced nearly 40,000 children and families to angling for the first time and engaged a further 20,000 primary school children through our innovative Reel Education programme. As an organisation, we have over 2,500 club and fishery members representing over 600,000 individuals—our army of national volunteers carry out thousands of water quality tests, thousands of community coaching sessions, thousands of voluntary enforcement hours, and we are rapidly approaching a million pieces of litter cleared from our aquatic environment.

We've hooked up with the Northern Powergrid to help tackle fishing safety! Northern Powergrid serve 8 million customers across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, and together we are encouraging anglers to ‘Look Up It’s Live!’ and 'look up before you hook up' when fishing near overhead power lines, cables and poles. Every year in the UK there are cases of fishing equipment coming into contact or too close with overhead power lines, causing horrific burn injuries or even death. With power lines on wooden poles carrying voltages up to 132,000 volts, anglers are being urged to always plan ahead when fishing, and tackle safety to make sure the next catch isn't deadly. And in other news... Seven U.K. sports governing bodies have come together to put their weight behind the pressing issue of water pollution, unveiling the Clean Water Alliance recently. Immediate milestones of the alliance are focussed on the creation of one unified water quality event guide, and sharing water quality data between multiple clubs and events that share the same blue spaces, to save duplication of time and resources. Outdoor sports often share the same fields of play with others, so there is a mutual benefit to protect these places. Instead of working independently on environmental issues, the CWA underlines the potential for a collective sports voice to be greater—bigger, stronger and more effective in terms of time and resource—than the sum of its parts. 👏Well done the Angling Trust, British Rowing British Triathlon Federation, GB OUTRIGGER CANOE ASSOCIATION, Paddle UK, Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Swim England who represent a combined 450,000 members, athletes and participants You can read more by following the link below. https://lnkd.in/gRT4TKQX #NoPlanetNoPlay #SEA_theChange #SEASummit24 #Networking #AusSport #ClimateChange #circulareconomy #sustainableprocurement
