Our team had a fantastic information and awareness session with Jared Whitaker last week ⭐ During the session, Jared shared candidly his personal experiences of domestic abuse. Jared utilises his journey to conduct research and write books which promote practical support and advocacy for men facing domestic abuse. We were thankful that Jared then spent additional time with our staff and volunteers, to engage in a Q&A following his insightful talk. We recommend that anyone who works with individuals experiencing abuse or anyone who just wants to learn more to get in contact with Jared. He can design tailored information sessions for any organisation 📢 Jared is hosting a 3-hour workshop on January 17th titled "Understanding and Healing from Domestic Abuse", which takes an even deeper dive into the specifics surrounding men's experiences of domestic abuse. Some of our staff and volunteers are looking forward to attending this session. While many celebrate joy and togetherness during the holiday season, for some, Christmas can bring feelings of fear, isolation, and pain. The pressure to create a perfect family holiday can be overwhelming, especially for those in abusive relationships. If you or someone you know is experiencing or recovering from domestic abuse, remember: you are not alone. There are people who care and resources available to help you. #DomesticAbuse #YouAreNotAlone #ChristmasSupport #DomesticAbuseAwareness #SupportSurvivors #HolidaySafety

RESEARCH REQUEST: Gender and Support Services for Domestic Abuse 👏 Following the link will take you through the participant information sheet and informed consent form to take part: https://lnkd.in/eZNaHmBa What is the purpose of the research❓ This research aims to identify how a person’s gender can create challenges in accessing domestic abuse support in Scotland. The study will discern if the support available is reflective of the reported incidents to the police – and beyond, to account for underreporting. The purpose of this is to determine if Scotland requires more awareness and accessibility for domestic abuse support - for everyone who may need it. Why have I been invited to take part❓ You have been invited to take part because you are a service user of either Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) or Scottish Women's Aid. Therefore, you have first-hand experience of accessing these organisations, and as a result your opinion of the accessibility and availability of the service is invaluable to the research aims of this study. Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential❓ For survey participants, your data will be kept confidential and only accessible by the student researcher, and where required her supervisor (mentioned above). It will not be shared with any external parties. It will be stored on secured university file systems an analysed for the duration of this study. After the research is complete, the data will be destroyed. All answers are completely anonymous, and no answers will indicate the identity of the participant (i.e. no question will ask for your name, address, postcode…). None of the information you provide will put you at risk of harm or identification. If you have any questions or need further information regarding this research, you can contact Lily Donnelly at [email protected] or dissertation supervisor, Dr. Megan O’Neill, at [email protected].

This week, we were introduced to Cyrenians, an organisation that supports individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The Cyrenians Chances gambling support services support individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and who are also negatively impacted by gambling. Support is available not only for the individual gambling but also for friends and family members affected by gambling 💙 At-risk groups may be vulnerable to gambling exposure and its associated harms. Domestic abuse and gambling-related issues can become intertwined. Individuals who carry out domestic abuse may gamble, affecting themselves and their families. For some, gambling may be a coping technique and a form of escape from abuse. The 'Chances' gambling support service adopts a non-judgmental, person-centered and relationship-based approach, guiding individuals on their path to recovery from gambling harm, reduce their gambling or cease altogether. The assistance offered to family and friends focuses on their needs rather than those of the individual gambling. Family and friends are encouraged to seek support, regardless of whether the individual gambling is receiving help. Cyrenians offer support in Edinburgh, the Lothians, and Falkirk, accepting both organisational referrals and self-referrals, with online support options available!!
