Did you know? 🤔 Through QAMA, a subset of the Uganda Fish Processors & Exporters Association (UFPEA), we prioritize the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. This proactive approach allows us to assess potential hazards and establish control measures focused on prevention, rather than relying solely on end-product testing. By identifying specific hazards and implementing measures early in the process, QAMA ensures the safety and quality of Uganda’s fish exports from start to finish. 🐟🌍 Our dedication to #HACCP reinforces food safety standards, ensuring Uganda continues to excel as a trusted, compliant, and sustainable exporter of fish and fishery products. This is implemented alongside our various private standards. #FoodSafety #QAMA #UFPEA #HACCP #UgandaFisheries #ExportQuality #Sustainability

Nile Perch nutritional attributes. The Nile Perch is known for its high level of Omega 3 fatty acids. It is a firm white flesh fish caught in the wild waters of Lake Victoria and other fresh water lakes in the East African region. Fish consumption trends in the EU indicate that Nile perch is a highly preferred cheaper near substitute for the popular white flesh fish species like the cod, hake, halibut and hoki and is highly favoured by the European market hence its competitive advantage.

Prioritizing Sustainability Through Self-Monitoring: Our Commitment to Responsible Fisheries At the Uganda Fish Processors and Exporters Association (UFPEA), sustainability is not just a goal—it's a core value that drives our actions. By 2016, the fish sector in East Africa faced a critical challenge: a persistent decline in fishery resources, particularly the Nile Perch, due to irresponsible fishing practices observed between 2005 and 2007. This alarming trend necessitated a collective intervention to protect and rejuvenate our vital aquatic resources. In response, UFPEA took decisive action. In September 2007, we implemented a rigorous self-monitoring system aimed at regulating the processing of immature fish—a practice that had become widespread in many processing plants. This system involved the appointment of independent inspection teams tasked with measuring all fish received by each plant. Our goal was clear: to ensure that no fish below 16 inches, and later 20 inches (50 cm), was processed. The results were encouraging. Our national-level success demonstrated that responsible, self-regulated practices could yield significant conservation benefits. Recognizing the importance of a unified approach, a pivotal meeting was convened on December 5, 2008, by the Executive Secretary of the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO). During this meeting, we discussed the harmonization of slot size regulations for the Nile Perch across all partner states. Today, UFPEA remains committed to fostering sustainable fishing practices. Our self-monitoring system is a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship and the long-term viability of the fishery sector. Together with our regional partners, we continue to strive for a balanced and prosperous future for our waters and communities. #Sustainability #ResponsibleFishing #UFPEA #NilePerch #SelfMonitoring #Conservation #EastAfrica #FisheriesManagement
