🙇🏾♀️Reflect. 😌Rest. 🧘🏿♀️🧘🏿♂️Rejuvenate. Today concluded our organization retreat which was an opportunity for us to stop and reflect on the past decade of work and strategize for our future. During the course of this year, we have gone through evolutionary processes with our communication and theory of change. This retreat served as an opportunity to immerse the entire BarefootLaw team into the results of these processes. 🧘🏿♀️Most importantly, it was a much-needed break for the team to rest and reset after a year of passionately supporting people to pursue their justice needs.

🤝 Working with community leaders to ensure women’s meaningful access to gender-responsive justice In a bid to create meaningful impact, we are hosting community leaders at the BarefootLaw Boxes for dialogues on how they can support the work against gender-based violence in their communities. Under our "From Access to Equality" (FATE) project, BarefootLaw works with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda to empower women and girls to pursue justice in an environment that serves their needs. As the focus of this year's #16DaysofActivism campaign is “Towards 30 years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls”, our knowledge-exchange dialogues with community leaders and law enforcement contribute to the campaign objective 5 - To ensure women’s and marginalized groups’ meaningful access to gender-responsive justice where they can seek remedies without fear of negative consequences. Yesterday's meeting in the Paicho BarefootLaw Box exposed some of the community leaders' active roles in perpetuating #GBV against women. It presented an opportunity for the lawyers, joining virtually, to educate them on the law surrounding their beliefs and together, they agreed on actions they would take to support the end of #GBV against women within their communities. We look forward to today's and tomorrow's interactive dialogues with leaders in Namutumba and Kole, respectively, as we work to #UNiTE partners to ensure that survivors' rights, safety and dignity are prioritised and upheld. The #FATEProjectUg is implemented in partnership with Avocats Sans Frontières - ASF Uganda Women's Network and Penal Reform International

Why should you care about ending Gender-Based Violence? This is a question that I look forward to answering today! This afternoon, I shall be part of an important discussion as a panelist focused on debunking common excuses for gender-based violence (GBV). This conversation is aligned with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action to end violence against women and girls. Our theme, "Leaving No Excuses for GBV," highlights the harmful narratives that perpetuate violence and silence victims. Together, we will confront and dismantle common excuses, which include but not limited to: "She deserved it", "She was asking for it." "She provoked me." "She's too sensitive." "I was drunk." "It's a private matter." "It's not my fault." "She'll get over it." "She's not the same person she used to be." "She's crazy." "She's too emotional." "She's not a good mother/wife." "I'm just stressed out." "Everyone does it." By addressing these misconceptions head-on, we aim to foster a culture of accountability and support for survivors. I invite everyone to join us THIS afternoon between 1:30 and 3:00pm in this critical conversation hosted by BarefootLaw on both Instagram and TikTok. Together, we can create a world where no one has to make excuses for violence, and where every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Let’s work towards lasting change! #16DaysOfActivism2024 #NoExcuses #EndGBV

LET THERE BE LIGHT: __ Access to justice isn’t just about providing legal services—it’s extends to preventing legal problems before they occur. The Justice Microgrid, a solar-powered initiative by BarefootLaw in partnership with Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), Jones Day, and Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.), exemplifies this proactive approach. By illuminating key areas prone to offences, such as marketplaces, boreholes, community halls, police stations, local courthouses, and the BarefootLaw Box- in combination with other tech enabled approaches, we've reduced reported offences against women by up to 90% in some areas. Today, we kicked off our #16DaysOfActivism with a Legal Clinic under the Concern for the Girl Child Haven Project, which is making a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable girls in Ntinda Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala District. At the legal clinic, our dedicated legal team provided invaluable legal information to the girls from the Haven Project as well as their guardians who were also in attendance. This included crucial insights into gender-based violence in all its forms, child rights, and child labor laws. By equipping these young girls with knowledge about their rights and the legal protections available to them, we empower them to stand up against injustice and build a brighter future. The Haven Project is implemented in partnership with BarefootLaw and supported by the Mott Foundation. #noexcuses #BarefootLaw #EndGBV
