Do you hire developers based on technical skills alone? It could be costing you.  Many companies make this mistake, believing that if a developer can code well, they’ll automatically thrive in the team. But this is not always the case. I have a client in Krakow who specifically hires Java Engineers who can have a “normal conversation" about software, clean code practices, and general life. But most importantly someone he can get along with. If they can do that, he’s usually ready to hire them. However, if they don’t fit culturally, it doesn’t matter if they’ve coded at Google, have an Oxbridge education, or have a long list of technical achievements. They won’t get the job. This is also not unique. According to Leaders.com, approximately 80% of employers take personality into account when making hiring decisions. Also research from Harvard Business Review found that 40-60% of hiring managers admit to hiring candidates who resemble them in terms of background, values, or attitudes. None of this mentions their skills. The ability to mesh with the team and collaborate is non-negotiable. Some people picture developers as introverted hackers, coding away in dark rooms, surrounded by empty energy drink cans. The stereotype that developers don’t need social skills in my opinion, comes from how they’re portrayed in Hollywood (Die Hard 4 was what came to mind when writing this). In reality, developers are part of cross-functional teams. They interact with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders daily. They need to explain complex ideas, collaborate on solutions, and contribute to the team’s overall culture. A developer who can’t work well with others or communicate effectively can disrupt workflows, no matter how technically gifted they are. It’s like having the most advanced software that no one knows how to use. What’s the point? The best hires are those who fit into your culture and can contribute to the team dynamic - not just those who can write the cleanest code. So if you’re only hiring based on technical skills, you might be missing out on your most valuable assets: collaboration, communication, and cultural fit. Skills get you in the door, but culture fit keeps you there. In the last couple of weeks, I have had many conversations with Krzysztof Przekwas and Artemi Krauczanka about the critical values of Software craftsmanship. For me: - Code should be simple and readable for all seniors and newbies in the project. - When unnecessary, try to avoid complicated patterns; maybe Kafka or MediatR is an overkill for your project. - You may have a tiny domain, or you built a simple integration to connect two systems, so it is stateless, mainly integration via REST API on the left and right site. - Remember there is a development phase and maintenance - is your code ready to be maintained? And when I conduct an interview, I don't have to answer them anymore. When people hear that I've been with the company for this long, and hear what positions I've held, what type of work I've been doing for EPAM, they usually understand that this is a company where you have the opportunity to grow, and that EPAM respects you for who you are. Staying at the same company for this long requires both you and your colleagues to respect each other, to constantly adapt to changing situations. EPAM is a company where you can easily find hundreds of people who have been here for more than 12 years. That in itself should be enough to answer your question: "why should I join EPAM?". This might sound like a recruitment post :-) but this is more of an appreciation to all of my colleagues that I have had the chance to work together with in the past 12 years... and the upcoming years!

Fielded through my notes from the conference I want to summarise 5 most important points,as colleagues keep asking me what I have seen at #GeeCon in #Krakow #Poland. 1. Java is still demanded From talks and conversations I picked up that java devs are still needed on the market and java as a language itself is still evolving. It was mentioned in several topics related to Java 21 new features and new ongoing changes to Java Streams. 2. AI adaptation in order to shift code development GeeCON 2024 featured numerous talks on integrating AI and ML into applications, some of them were followed with demo and practical use cases. Those AI based technologies are becoming more accessible to developers. 3. Trends for cloud native architecture In dozens of presentations were mentioned that companies are trying to implement their own cloud solutions in order to cut costs as well as common pitfalls that are waiting on this route. 4. Code quality, application performance analysis and team coordination Tools and methodologies that focused on those 3 aspects were mentioned in order to increment team performance and productivity. 5. New programming paradigms Functional programming, reactive programming, and event-driven architectures were among the key topics explored. These paradigms offer new ways to handle complexity, concurrency, and data flows in modern applications. From my perspective all mentioned above indicates that  #Java is still empowered for building responsive and scalable systems.

Recommendation to all your Ukrainian friends and acquaintances: Even though Ukrainian consular services do not work outside Ukraine, they can remotely authorise a local Ukrainian agency to handle all the necessary documents for them in Ukraine and deliver them anywhere outside Ukraine: https://aitochka.com/ We will then use these documents to arrange temporary/permanent residency in Paraguay or Uruguay for them with Liberation Travel. They need to do this before their Ukrainian passport expires (and they become a hunted beast - illegal immigrants), as they can't do it remotely.

Departing for Krakow and the LambdaDays conference where I'll be speaking how it's not only possible but desirable to create full stack web applications in #fsharp adopting the core principles of functional programming with data, types and values. Are you creating web applications today using JS / TS, React and .NET technologies? All of these popular technologies play beautifully with the FP paradigm.

That’s why you need to have defined values, requirements, and a thorough hiring process. But no one loves the overdo of a 10-step, month-long interview process either. At incora, we have 2 main steps: 1. The first is an initial interview to see if our values and vision match. There’s also an English test because that's a big part of the job. 2. And just then, we have a technical interview (sometimes with a few steps if needed) to see if a candidate has all the skills needed. Sometimes, not all the requirements are checked, but it’s still a perfect match. The skills could be learned, but a responsible person is hard to find nowadays. I don't know if this is only my observation or if someone else feels the same. One of the biggest problems with infrastructure is that it is too often isolated from the development teams. Companies often extract a separate team responsible for the infrastructure at some point. As this team grows, it is then split into multiple others. These teams handle topics like identity access management, orchestrators, API gateways, or build pipelines. This, in turn, leads developers to worry less and less about infrastructure. It is not uncommon for software architects to treat infrastructure-related topics as a second category. There are DevOps; we can put it on their shoulders. This is an anti-pattern. There are so many things that can go wrong: - Database, storage, and cache - API gateway and load balancers - IAM - Orchestrators, message brokers - Security of infrastructural components And many more. At some point, I decided to start collecting topics related to architecture that are most important from the software architect's perspective. The result? Candidates asking salaries and negotiation strategy tips. Whether you are negotiating with a new employee or freelancer, or one of your existing developers are looking for a raise or are due for a review, it is essential to be prepared. This will help you make an informed offer; ensuring you are being competitive in order to attract or retain talented developers by paying a fair market rate, whilst not being taken advantage of. Negotiation strategy might differ depending on number of factors: - When was the last salary raise? Has anything special happened since then? - Current geopolitical situation in the employee’s country - What is your local employment market like for this role? Do you have lots of suitable candidates available? - How long have they already worked in your company? - How long have they stayed in previous roles? - How much experience do they have? - How critical is this person to your project/company? - Do you need the skills they have and are using within your project / company, or are you over employing? - How easy will it be to replace them with a new hire? - What kind of employee are they? - Do they deliver? - Are they a good resource? - Are they reliable? - Do they have a proven track record yet? Before you begin any salary negotiations, familiarize yourself with the current market’s situation so that you can assess how much other companies pay developers of a similar level in your local area. If you want to have a rough overview of these ranges you can start by checking levels. That will give you a good grasp of where the market is heading and what expectations are reasonable. If you are already a bigger and established company (>35-50 people) you might already have some specified levels of seniority in your company so salary ranges are predetermined. In this case the objective of the interview process is to determine the candidate's level, which will enable you to know what room you have for negotiation. It is important to also take into consideration the location of the given person. In my personal opinion - Ukraine was FORCED to cross russian border and take over some of the official russian territory. Who forced it? The USA, and potential presidency of Donald Trump - who openly speaks about "Minsk 3" style "freeze", that would allow russia to re-arm in 3 or 5 or maybe 8 years, and then finish up Ukraine. Just like it happened before with Minsk 1 and Minsk 2 - which both led to the current full-scale invasion. Though Biden/Sullivan administration is also to blame here - for Minsk 1/2 specifically back in 2014, when Biden was a VP, but also for current containment of war within Ukrainian territory - which is a recipe for defeat for Ukraine. In order to avoid Minsk 3 kind of freeze, where war is temporarily stopped at current front, and then conquered territories are basically awarded to the conqueror (as it de-facto happened with Crimea in 2014, and big parts of Donbass in 2015) - Ukraine must hold some of russia's territories. Russia will never be able to accept Minsk 3 in case it awards some of russian territories to Ukraine, thus the best way to make sure Minsk 3 doesn't happen - is capture of some russian territories. This capture, however, is very costly in terms of manpower and military equipment - which is busy now guarding part of Kursk region, while it is BADLY needed on Pokrovsk direction where russia is advancing every day, destroying town by town, and getting close to bigger towns like Pokrovsk itself (population 61 000 at year 2020), Tchasiv Yar (12 700) and eventually Kramatorsk (185 000) and Slovyansk (109 000).
