Is sitting the new smoking? Here in Türkiye it is estimated that 41% of adults and an even more concerning 85% of teenagers are not engaging in enough physical activity, defined in guidelines as at least 150 min. of moderate-intensity exercise/week. (Source: WHO, 2022, globally it’s 31% of adults). In fact, even if you exercise regularly, sitting too much can offset exercise benefits (over 8 hours of sitting a day, increases the risks of cardiovascular disease and early death). Here in our local community, we have teamed up with Obesity Academia and the Beşiktaş municipality in Istanbul, to bring exercise equipment to the local park, to help fight this inactivity. Machines as the ones you see in the video (yes, we were having a bit of fun on them) are placed in many parks across Türkiye, but are often not used much or correctly. Stress is a natural reaction to an unhealthy situation. And in a company with employees as passionate as my colleagues and working in a very challenging environment, stress is unfortunately an everyday occurrence. We were lucky to have Organizational Phycologist Nadia El-Salanti visiting Türkiye, not only interviewing the departments with the most stress but also having workshops with our leadership teams discussing how to recognize stress in one-self and others. We often brush off stress either because we don’t recognize it in ourselves or because of stigma and bias – but recognizing, discussing and addressing it is important, not only for company performance but because as employers we are responsible for how stress impacts people's private lives when they get home.   A big thank you to Nadia and our P&O team (Selim N. Ortega Kızıler, Pınar Özel, Mustafa ATİKTÜRK, İlknur Nişancı) for putting focus on stress and what we can do to address it.   Attached is a simple slide with the symptoms of stress. The WHO has identified Türkiye as one of the countries in the world with the highest projected increase in obesity prevalence - suggesting by 2060 as many as 94% of the population could have the disease! I look forward to seeing the outcome of the Early Prevention Of Obesity research starting now and that will use AI to find out what can be done to tackle the disease in Türkiye and other countries faced with steep increases.   We are never fully ready for a disaster...but we can try our outmost to be prepared for it. After experiencing the devastating earthquake in Turkiye last year, my colleagues working for people living with haemophilia have came up with a brilliant awareness project. They have seen, how it is important to be prepared with the right process in place when it comes to treatment of rare diseases which require specific treatment such as haemophilia. This year, in collaboration with the “Turkish Haemotology Association” we are kicking- off the campaign “Haemophilia Management During Disaster” which aims to provide awareness and a structured process for the disease’s management during times of disaster.   The treatment of haemophilia is life saving and once disrupted, it puts the patient’s life at risk. Diabetes is more than just a diagnosis – it’s a global challenge as one the world’s four major types of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).   As healthcare professionals, it’s crucial we collectively shift the narrative – from managing crises to championing prevention and innovation in tackling these life-altering diseases.   But in addition to the right treatments, we also need to pay attention to the mental and emotional aspects of managing diabetes.   According to data by the International Diabetes Federation:   → 3 in 4 people living with diabetes have experienced anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition because of their diabetes.   → 4 in 5 people living with diabetes experienced diabetes burnout.   → 75% of people living with diabetes would like to receive more support for their emotional and mental well-being from their healthcare provider.   So – how can we help during this Diabetes Awareness Month?   𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Diabetes goes beyond blood sugar levels. If you have a friend or loved one who is living with the condition, please check in on them. A simple question such as “How are you coping?” can make a world of difference.   𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 & 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫: Share resources on your own social media about proven tips on how to manage stress, recognise burnout, and build emotional resilience.   𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞: If you’re in the position to do so, introduce resources that prioritise mental wellbeing as much as physical health.    𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 & 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞: I would love to see mental health be integrated into diabetes care plans. Timeless advice for modern healthcare... As my family vacation in Turkey comes to an end, I'm reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. Beyond the breath taking sights, it's the people we've met - archaeologists, ice-cream makers, street poets, and countless other beautiful souls - who've left an indelible mark. One of them shared with us the story and 7 famous advice of Mevlana, a philosopher from the 13th century, who offered a profound roadmap for living and working with compassion and wisdom. I share them below along with my thoughts on how these teachings can significantly enhance our work and impact on patients' lives.   1. "In generosity and helping others, be like a river." Let your compassion flow abundantly, and freely share knowledge and resources. This accelerates our ability to develop life-changing therapies.   2. "In compassion and grace, be like the sun." Shine your warmth and love equally on everyone. Keep patients at the heart of everything we do- from clinical trial participants to healthcare providers and caregivers.   3. "In concealing others' faults, be like the night." Don’t hide errors, but approach them with empathy and a focus on learning. Create a culture of psychological safety where innovation can thrive.   4. "In anger and fury, be like the dead." Respond to challenges with calm and wisdom, In our high-stakes environment, maintaining composure under pressure is crucial for effective decision-making.   5. "In modesty and humility, be like the earth." Stay grounded and support others without seeking recognition, remaining open to new ideas and willing to learn from anyone, regardless of their position.   6. "In tolerance, be like the sea." Let your heart be vast enough to contain all experiences and perspectives. Embrace diversity in our teams, thinking, and approaches to problem-solving.   7. "Either exist as you are or be as you look." Align your inner self with your outward actions, embracing honesty and integrity in all aspects of our work. As the healthcare industry is often scrutinized, authenticity builds trust.   These teachings remind us that we have the capacity to be as magnificent and nurturing as nature itself.
