Our new paper presents the current implementation status of best available techniques (BATs) in Turkish industries. An intensive on-site industrial work was conducted to obtain data. The findings revealed that 37% of surveyed BATs were fully implemented, rising to 88% when considering potential future implementations. We recommend similar assessments in other European industrial sectors to evaluate compliance with mandatory BATs outlined in the Industrial Emissions Directive. Can communication happen within dreams? A neurology company’s recent study on lucid dreaming—when one is aware of dreaming—has unveiled some fascinating insights. In this study, one of two dreamers repeated a word they received through headphones while in their dream, whereas the other participant repeated the same word while awake. So, what does psychology, and Freud in particular, have to say about dreams? Freud views dreams as a gateway to the depths of the unconscious, considering them as symbolic expressions of repressed desires. Dreams serve as a theater that reveals a person’s internal conflicts and hidden wishes; for example, dreaming of flying may symbolize a desire for freedom. In his work The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud argues that dreams are not random images but carry hidden messages from the unconscious. Modern research suggests that it may also be possible to communicate with others during dreams. While dreams are regarded as a space where thoughts and feelings from the unconscious are expressed through symbols, when a person dreams of talking to a loved one, it can reflect not only their own desires but also a connection made through a shared consciousness. This perspective reinforces the idea that dreams can be not only individual experiences but also collective ones, a concept that would have been quite surprising in Freud’s time. #psychology #luciddreams #Freud

Last Friday, I attended an event organized by Enocta in celebration of the exciting developments they have been working on recently, especially in incorporating AI technologies to their L&D platform. Enocta has been a trusted LMS solution partner and valuable content provider corporate academies in Türkiye for over 20 years under the leadership of Ahmet Hancer and the dedicated work of the enocta team. With the recent impetus, they are poised to produce even more value to their stakeholders. There were two presentations, by Donald H Taylor and Thomas Otter, which were invaluable in locating ourselves in the whirlwind of developments the global L&D scene. A point that Donald Taylor emphasized especially struck a deep chord with me and kept me thinking. He illustrated the capabilities that LLM models have recently acquired with striking examples. The "chihuahua and muffin challenge" was quite funny and showed how far AI models progressed since 2017. He then talked about how you can now upload books and articles to Google's NotebookLM, so that it gives you nice summaries, and turn them into a podcast. He showed us how it created a podcast about his 2017 book "Learning Technologies in Workplace". Imagine two AI voices, talking excitedly about a book or article you wrote, lavishing you in praise: the first time you hear it, it's unbelievably funny and it definitely strokes your ego, but how about the content of that podcast? Well, if you scratch the shiny polish of the soundbites, the details are often not correct. He stated that the podcast talked about the general topic of his book, but missed the key arguments he raised in it. and it gives you a false sense of good content. He then referred to a survey he carried out with Egle Bernotaite and published last April titled "AI in L&D: From Talk to Action": https://lnkd.in/dByCXYWY In this online survey with over 300 participants, creating content topped the list of the various uses of AI in L&D. He then expressed his fear that the ease with which one can create content with AI might make us miss many other ways that AI can be useful in L&D, while leading to a profileration of hastily produced content that will simply not help learners. This warning reminded me of another tech revolution, back in 1990s with the improvement of multimedia capabilities of the PCs and the advent of CD-ROMs and then DVD-ROMs with their gigantic storage sizes. Remember Encarta? Compared to the dense text format of the Larousses and Britannicas of the day, with maybe an occasional thumbnail-sized black-and-white photos, Encarta (with the support of Microsoft) offered high resolution photos, colorful videos and multimedia animations. Then, the age of smartphones began, along with the invention of social media, and the rise of emojis. Back then, we though multimedia would enrich the reading experience. We ended up regressing to the age of hieroglyphs! TLDR; how you use content in L&D matters more than how colorful it is.

The question I get asked most after ‘what is everyone else doing’ is ‘what’s the business case’? This isn’t my job my job to prove unless you give me access and license to capture pre/post data and allow me scope to measure this. The population is getting older. Unless organisations test and experiment with different approaches to engage/retrain/attract a multigenerational workforce the evidence for what works all/most of the time isn’t clear. What I do know is we are ageing as a society. You can choose to do nothing (and the evidence suggests most organisations are firmly ignoring this issue) but then let me ask you this question: when in history has ignoring a large mass scale change worked for organisations who do nothing to adapt? This is not a diversity and inclusion issue. It’s a commercial opportunity of climate change proportion and the opportunity to lead is yours for the taking. #hrsummit #ageingpopulation #over50s

The Central Biogas Plant in Gaziantep, which was established with the support of the Silkroad Development Agency, represents one of the most concrete examples of local development. The facility, which processes 100 tons of bovine and 50 tons of ovine manure every day and generates 1MW of electricity worth 800 thousand dollars annually, meets the electricity needs of 4 thousand households. The first biogas plant established with public investment in Turkey also makes a significant environmental contribution by producing high quality fertilizer from biological waste. #yerelkalkinmahamlesi #gaziantep

🇹🇷Just arrived in Istanbul and are looking forward to attend and held a speech at ICCI - Uluslararası Enerji ve Çevre Fuarı 2024 at the session "Offshore Wind - opportunities for Türkiye" organized by Denizüstü Rüzgar Enerjisi Derneği (DÜRED) (Turkish Offshore Wind Association) with chairman Dr Murat Durak as host! The event starts at 10.30 AM. My focus will be on workforce development, GWO training, as well as Wind Tech education and R&D for the offshore wind industry. At the event Knut Høiland will present the combined floating wind and wave platform Flex2power (developed in Norway) - looking for partnership with Turkish industry for fabrication, academia for EU and R&D projects and governance for possible installations in Turkish waters. In the Norwegian Delegation also Tor Arne Johnsen from Norwegian Offshore Wind will be present. We will also join in B2B meetings after lunch. Energy Innovation - NORWAY has entered into an agreement to collaborate on the development of a one-stop-shop for training, education and R&D for offshore wind in Türkiye with Bandırma Onyedi Eylül Üniversitesi. We will visit Bandirma on Friday 26th. During the visit to Bandirma there will also be a focus on Green Hydrogen production and energy systems (where Energy Innovation will share information from the ROBINSON - H2020 project). Norwegian maritime industry has long traditions in collaboration with the very well performing Turkish industry for building ships and offshore installations. We believe there is great opportunities for a collaboration also for the offshore wind industry in the years to come.
