🔊 #Coaching is a fundamental element of Odyssey’s approach to delivering its mission to create #leadership development journeys that help organisations unlock their #culture and execute their strategies effectively. Why? Because it really is the most effective and impactful way to achieve a leader’s sustainable development. Having run a workplace training business for over 15 years, I have listened to many clients’ frustrations that their leaders and managers, those tasked with carrying the culture of their organisations, have been unwilling or unable to create the change they had been open to in a training session. There are so many reasons for this. My business partner, Richard Thompson, talked about the #forgetting curve earlier this week, or possibly the leaders weren’t bought into the training because they didn’t feel it applied to them. But so often it is the environment of the training session itself. Let’s face it - it’s a lot to expect.  A group of leaders gathered in a room together being asked to demonstrate their #vulnerability to reveal what obstacles exist for them and to feel safe enough to allow each other the chance to reflect, test their thinking and beliefs and to practice new techniques in front of each other. 🎯 The success of any corporate strategy depends upon the effectiveness of its leadership and its ability to ensure that the organisational culture has the necessary behaviours in place to support the next strategic goals. The multi-faceted leader today needs to demonstrate a broad array of capabilities and skills: #self-awareness, #trust, #compassion and vulnerability, all whilst demonstrating strength in #decision making, supportive challenge and #allyship, and #accountability for their actions and behaviours and those of their team. Whilst formulating our Odyssey approach, it was clear to us that whilst training has its place in terms of knowledge transfer and at scale interventions, the real magic happens through a coaching approach – that’s where the #returnoninvestment crystalises. 🤔 Individual and group coaching gives leaders and managers relevance which in turn creates buy in and autonomy towards achievable goals. Deeply personal journeys are possible because the threat of competition is diminished, the focus is on oneself rather than others, issues can be discussed without fear and, critically, deep rooted beliefs can be challenged. This isn’t just change. I have been speaking to d&i Leaders (Diversity and Inclusion Leaders) about how we can recognise and reward #employeenetworks. In this piece, I discuss the importance of employee networks with Jo Faragher (she/her), but we also examine why they are often undervalued. I think that’s mainly because employers can see employee networks as passion projects. This hugely undervalues the work of the network and the people within it, don’t you think⁉   I want to encourage employers to provide network leaders with protected time to fulfil the additional work and ensure that the work takes place during working hours.    I also think that many network leads are looking for visibility. Employers can fulfil this by inviting network leads to present their work, achievements and successes to the senior team and feature their work in internal and external communications.   What do you think? End person in mind is the key to unlocking a company's potential for sustainable and successful change. So many companies define their vision and objectives from a business perspective and then somehow expect people to get behind that. But how can anyone get behind cold words that don't mean anything? They can't And then leaders wonder why they are having issues with talent retention and attraction, engagement, motivation, etc. If you define what you are trying to do from the person who is the furthest from the decision making room - i.e. the end person And hence answer the SO WHAT question for them, You have a much greater chance of actually galvanising their buy in and action to achieve it. Such a simple yet powerful concept. Well managed endings don't just enable those leaving to move positively on to their next new beginning - they also enable those who remain in the organisation to flourish. A trajectory for strong cultural and commercial flow - rather than creating deceleration and obstacles in the organisational system from poorly managed endings.

Friday Celebrations: A quiet week of impact coaching leaders on... We think we need to get on big stages, get in front of all the people, and make a lot of noise to be impactful. That can be a lot of fun, and it's been a very energising few weeks getting out there in the world and sharing my energy with my people....AND... How I have the most deep, powerful and long-lasting impact is to work with individuals who are up to something in the world, or want to be, and are open to a supportive partnership to: - see things differently; - learn how they work; - dream bigger; - experiment with new action; and - change the world in their way - be it quietly or making a big noise. I've worked with folks this week on: - putting themself out there to launch a new product - decisions on closing or pivoting a business - communicating to their team that they need help - getting their new boss on board with their agenda - pivoting their career to a more fulfilling and impactful role - getting the board of directors onside with a new direction - prioritisation, prioritisation, prioritisation... And what holds these leaders back from going it alone? - lack of self-belief - fear of what others think of them - overthinking the issues - fear of rejection - underestimating the value of their work - a lack of direction - fear of failure, and success. What unites my clients? - They all want to be successful, happy and fulfilled in their work. - They're all on a mission for greater good and probably care a bit too much. - They're all doing too much, and yet it's never enough. -They all want to be liked, appreciated and bring everyone with them. In many organisations purpose statements are something written on a poster that no one can remember. However we know from extensive research that a strong sense of purpose that everyone knows, believes and feels is one of 7 vital ingredients in creating high performing and thriving environments. My amazing colleague Lidia Ranieri is incredibly passionate and learned in this field and she has penned the following article that links leaders' purpose with their organisation's.
