TRAVEL COMPANIES: ADAPT OR PERISH In an age where travel continues despite its ecological impact, it’s tempting to think that travel companies can sit back, count their profits, and ride the wave of consumer demand. However, our Prosumer study on Travel & Tourism, surveying 14,000 people across 32 markets (including Thailand), reveals quite the opposite. For Thai consumers, the expectation is clear: travel brands must evolve to survive. Thailand stands out globally for its heightened demand for sustainable and socially conscious travel: Empowering Local Communities: A staggering 92% of Thai Prosumers and 75% of Thai Mainstream consumers believe “tourism brands should support and empower local communities.” These are the highest scores across all 32 markets surveyed, far surpassing global averages of 83% for Prosumers and 69% for Mainstream consumers. Respect for Human Rights: 84% of Thai Prosumers and 70% of Thai Mainstream state they will “boycott brands that promote destinations which do not respect human rights.” Once again, these scores are the highest globally, dwarfing the averages of 62% and 49%. Ecological Responsibility: While still emerging, 26% of Thai Prosumers and 25% of Mainstream consumers agree that “airline companies shouldn’t be authorized to advertise because they pollute too much,” aligning with global averages. Thailand’s heightened awareness likely stems from recent incidents involving foreign travel brands and the call for change is loud and clear. Travel brands that step up to reduce ecological impacts, embrace social responsibility, and actively contribute to local economies will earn lasting loyalty. HITTING THE RESET BUTTON Not so long ago, travel was all about collecting passport stamps and racing through nine countries in six days. In today’s fast-paced world, the meaning of travel has shifted. For more than three-quarters of Prosumers, it’s now a way to relax, unwind, and reconnect. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are brimming with travel content that highlights serene escapes into nature, immersive cultural experiences, and adrenaline-packed adventures. To better understand this evolution in travel motivations, Havas’ recent Prosumer study on Travel & Tourism, which surveyed 14,000 people across 32 markets, including Thailand revealed interesting insights In Thailand, the need to “hit the reset button” is even more pronounced. - Travel to Relax: 82% of Thai Prosumers and 79% of Thai Mainstream consumers agree that “despite the ecological cost, it’s important for me to travel to relax and unwind.” This surpasses the global average of 70% for Prosumers and 67% for Mainstream consumers. - Travel for a Change of Scenery: Thais show a particularly strong desire for a change of air, with 69% of Prosumers and 60% of Mainstream consumers agreeing—a stark contrast to 42% and 38% globally. - Cultural Exploration: Our love for cultural discovery shines through, with 75% of Thai Prosumers and 52% of Mainstream consumers stating that “it’s important for me to travel because it opens us to other cultures.” These figures significantly outpace the global averages of 59% and 46%. For Thais, travel isn’t just a break from the daily grind—it’s an opportunity for cultural exploration, personal growth, and true revitalization. 📩 Want to learn more? We all know that travel, especially by air, impacts climate change. In fact, 43% of Prosumers and about a third of the mainstream public hold travel and airlines as primary contributors to global warming. Despite growing environmental concerns and movements like Sweden’s Flygskam (“flight shame”), personal accountability remains low. To dive deeper, Havas’ recent Prosumer study on Travel & Tourism, including insights from Thailand, uncovered an interesting trend. In Thailand, concern over travel’s environmental impact is above the global average, yet individuals tend to shift responsibility onto others. For instance, 41% of Thai Prosumers feel guilty about the environmental impact of travel (compared to 32% globally), but 79% believe that brands and airlines bear the primary responsibility—much higher than the global average. Unlike global respondents who blame frequent travellers and the wealthy, Thai consumers tend to hold brands more accountable. In a recent post, we explored the Thai’s determination to travel, even in the face of environmental concerns. But what about financial pressures? With high inflation, a cost-of-living crisis, political instability, and rising global conflicts, would we expect travel demand to slow? In the recently conducted Havas Prosumer Study on Travel & Tourism, surveying 14,000 people across 32 markets, including Thailand, we discovered that for many, travel remains a top priority—so much so that they’re willing to sacrifice nearly anything to keep exploring the world. In Thailand, 74% of Thai Prosumers and 44% of mainstream consumers agree they would give up other luxuries to keep traveling. These numbers are significantly higher than the global averages of 64% and 40%, respectively. Here are a few key takeaways from the report: - Only 23% of Thai Prosumers feel less amazed by places they visit compared to 26% globally, reflecting a continued fascination with travel experiences. - An impressive 98% of Thai Prosumers and 88% of the mainstream believe there are still relatively unexplored destinations, indicating a strong desire to keep discovering new places.
