1.49. Dragon Naturally Speaking compatibility info

This page contains general info regarding Dragon Naturally Speaking's (DNS) compatibility and functionality with Kurzweil 3000 (K3000).

Does Dragon Naturally Speaking work with Kurzweil 3000 for Windows and Mac?

The basic speech to text (i.e. dictation) functionality should work in the latest version of Kurzweil 3000 for Windows, as it would in any third party software application where a cursor is within an open text field.

Nuance discontinued the Dragon product for Mac back in October 2018.  Here is their announcement article:  https://www.nuance.com/dragon/support/professional-individual-for-mac-eol.html .  With the latest Mac OS release (10.15 Catalina), Mac OS discontinued support for 32-bit applications.  As such, even an older version of Dragon would likely not work when running the latest Mac OS.

Additionally, you may be able to enforce advanced voice commands and menu navigation through DNS with K3000 for Windows only. See the attached voicecmd.rtf file for voice commands that may be enforced via the below method.

How do you enforce the additional DNS voice commands with Kurzweil 3000?

During the installation of K3000, a process will run that will attempt to configure DNS's NSApps.ini file. Note that this functionality was designed for Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 and may not apply to future versions of DNS if how DNS handles advanced voice commands in third party applications has changed.  Please contact Nuance if you're using a newer version of DNS and these steps do not function for you.

If you install DNS after you install K3000, you can run this configuration process after the fact by running C:\Program Files (x86)\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Kurzweil 3000\Dragon\DNSCompatability.exe

Does Kurzweil 3000 have a basic built-in speech to text feature?

Yes, the latest version of Kurzweil 3000 (v16) for both Windows and Mac have basic built-in speech to text functionality (i.e. dictation), where you can speak into a microphone and text will be typed into an open text document. This function can accessed through the following:

Windows:  Tools > Speech to Text

Mac:  Edit > Start Dictation
