Edit & view text from right to left

Right-to-left controls turn on automatically when you open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation with right-to-left text, or when you add text in a right-to-left language. You can also turn on right-to-left controls manually.

Turn on right-to-left controls

Before you can write, view and edit text in right-to-left, you need to turn it on on your computer.

Use right-to-left language controls

After you turn on right-to-left controls, you can change the layout of documents with text in a right-to-left language. If there's no right-to-left language text in the document, you can't see these controls.

Google Docs

Change paragraph direction

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs app Docs.
  2. Open a document that contains text in a right-to-left language.
  3. Tap Edit Edit.
  4. Tap Format Format and then Paragraph.
  5. To change paragraph direction, tap Paragraph direction paragraph direction.

Note: Right-to-left controls will also automatically turn on for users that have a right-to-left language as their phone language setting.

Google Sheets

Change the direction of the columns for a particular sheet

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Sheets app Sheets.
  2. Open a spreadsheet that contains text in a right-to-left language.
  3. On the sheet tab at the bottom, tap the Down arrow Down arrow.
  4. To change the direction of the spreadsheet grid, tap Right-to-left.

Note: This change will only apply to the current sheet, not all sheets in the spreadsheet.

Google Slides

Change paragraph direction

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Slides app Slides.
  2. Open a presentation that contains text in a right-to-left language.
  3. Tap the text you want to change.
  4. Tap Format Format and then Paragraph.
  5. To change paragraph direction, tap Paragraph direction paragraph direction.

Note: Right-to-left controls will also automatically turn on for users that have a right-to-left language as their phone language setting.
