Job Description:
The Department of Library & Information Science at Southern Utah University invites collaborative, creative, and service-oriented applicants for the Outreach Librarian, a tenure-track faculty position to begin July 1, 2024.
This position may be hired at either an assistant or associate professor level.
The Outreach Librarian provides innovative and high-quality programming and services for the Gerald R.
Sherratt Library at Southern Utah University.
The Outreach librarian builds relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community to communicate the wide range of library services.
The Outreach Librarian manages social media marketing and leads the library's diversity, equity, inclusion, and access initiatives.
In addition, as a member of the library faculty, the Outreach Librarian teaches information literacy courses, acts as a liaison to one or more academic departments, works several hours a week at the reference desk, and has scholarship and service requirements.
Plan, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of outreach initiatives, programming, and services that promote academic success and lifelong learning targeted to SUU students, faculty, and staff and the wider community.
Initiatives may include partnerships with a variety of campus, student, and community groups.
Provides leadership for the development of strategies, partnerships, and initiatives to enhance student knowledge of library research and discovery skills to increase student success and reports to the Department Chair and Library Director.
Takes initiative to engage departments, programs, and colleges across campus in creating opportunities for the library to support their mission and functions.
Build and maintain partnerships and relationships with university and community groups/organizations to promote and foster information literacy, lifelong learning, and the Library as an essential partner for student success.
Organizes library outreach efforts, including events, exhibits, tours, and other in-person and online engagement activities.
Engages with students in various venues, such as Southern Utah University Student Association (SUUSA), student clubs, activities/ events, and other appropriate venues that are student-centered or involve student awareness and services.
Date of first consideration: 01/16/2023 Duties and Responsibilities: Oversee and manage the library social media strategy and community engagement.
Create content for social media, print advertising, and other appropriate communication methods to promote outreach efforts.
Acts as a liaison from the Library to one or more academic departments.
Initiate and maintain professional acquaintances with the Department Chair and individual faculty members in liaison area(s) to promote library services and research instruction.
Collaborates with faculty to develop course and assignment related research instruction to foster both subject learning and transferable research skills in relevant information resources.
Conducts collection development for one or more subject area(s) relevant to the liaison assignment, including new-acquisition selection, and weeding in the area(s).
Uses library guides, and other tools to create discipline-specific digital and print informational tutorials, guides, handouts, and reference to the subject areas.
Promotes student learning through formal and informal teaching.
Assume regular service assignments at the Reference Desk.
Work collegially with other faculty and staff in internal planning and decision-making processes for the Library including leading and participating on one or more work groups.
Participate in faculty committees and governance as assigned.
Participates in institutional, professional, and community service as required for promotion, tenure, and retention under applicable departmental and University policies.
Engage in scholarly research, maintain current knowledge of trends and issues in librarianship and higher education including those related to specific area(s) of responsibility as liaison.
Creates scholarship and/ or creative activity as required for promotion, tenure, and retention under applicable departmental and University policies.
Other duties as required and assigned by Library Administration.
Education and Experience Requirements: MLS/MLIS from ALA-accredited library school or foreign equivalent.
Evidence of potential for earning tenure.
Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks asynchronously in an academic environment.
Flexibility and interpersonal abilities of a nature to work successfully with a wide variety of constituencies including students, university faculty, staff, and administration.
Evidence of ability to work independently and collegially.
Organizational, written, and oral-communication skills.
Commitment to effective service for both internal and external patrons.
Experience or commitment to teaching at the college level (online and/or face-to-face).
Experience using Canvas or other Learning Management System (i.
e.
Blackboard, Moodle, etc).
Knowledge of a variety of popular social media platforms.
