On the sidelines of the #WomenInTechSummit2024 Warsaw in June, I gave an extensive interview to Rzeczpospolita, the second biggest daily newspaper in Poland. We covered a broad range of topics: the telecommunication market in Europe, Fair Share, AI, STEM – just to name a few. Here is a brief summary:   🔹Telecommunications is Europe's Digital Backbone: The telecommunications sector is crucial for Europe's digital transformation. By enabling efficient customer contact, greater business efficiency and competitiveness, it will make life easier for citizens and enable businesses to enter the digital age. Therefore, it’s about more than just the prosperity of telecom companies; it's about enabling Europe to compete globally, particularly with the USA and Asia. Currently, the European market faces significant challenges. Europe lacks major digital platforms. Therefore, Telco companies should be enabled to grow into digital platforms such as data centers and security platforms to make sure that the digitization of European companies will not be entirely dependent on suppliers from the US and Asia.   🔹Market Fragmentation with over 100 mobile operators in Europe, compared to a few in the US and China, hinders profitability. The average return on capital employed in Europe is below the weighted average cost of capital (WACC), indicating the need for market consolidation and regulatory reforms. We need a real telecoms single market in Europe. And a revision of competition rules to foster investments as well as a reduction of regulatory complexity across European countries to encourage innovations. The vast amount of ex-ante regulation needs to be reduced to allow the market to play by its own rules.    🔹Relationship with Big Tech companies and need for Fair Share: Big Tech companies benefit immensely from the existing infrastructure without contributing to the associated costs. A fair contribution from these companies towards network costs is crucial for maintaining a sustainable connectivity ecosystem. It ensures that the telecom industry can continue to invest in its infrastructure. Also the principle of ‘same service-same rules' should be applied to the Big Tech, as most of them offer telecommunication services like Facebook Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp without complying to any of the regulations that apply to Telco operators.   🔹Regulation of Artificial Intelligence: I believe, we need to be cautious to regulate artificial intelligence and limit its potential. However, I would advocate for introducing safeguards against the misuse of AI for malicious purposes.   🔹Women in Tech: Promoting gender diversity in tech is vital. Diverse teams help prevent bias in AI, ensuring balanced and inclusive technological advancements. Encouraging more women to study and work in tech is mandatory. Many years ago, I decided to collaborate with companies in regulated markets. It was a conscious choice, as even affiliate activities with operators lacking local licenses would have been much more beneficial for us. However, we play the long term strategy, we anticipate changes, and we don't focus solely on the here and now. Sometimes, it's worth deferring certain benefits over time. That's why we are launching the "Nemesis" project, which involves supporting licensed entities by informing media publishers who directly link to offshore companies or affiliate sites supporting such companies. Poland is the first country where we are launching "Nemesis", but we will systematically expand this list. We count on the support of legally operating entities and public institutions.

VOD services are clearly winning over paid TV in Poland. The cumulative value of the VOD market in Poland in 2023 was 2.3 billion PLN, with an annual growth rate of 28% - says PMR's report, which includes data and forecasts on the paid TV and VOD market. In 2023, paid VOD services sales to Polish households increased significantly, reached 65% and outrunning paid TV services. The household base is largely made up of those who use someone else's subscription. Account sharing is a very popular way to optimize customer costs, but it's clearly detrimental to streaming platforms' revenues. In 2023, Netflix restricted account sharing and it was beneficial for the company, which gained a significant number of subscribers. Disney has made similar moves. According to PMR, technological development, the remarkable growth of fast internet connections in our country, has become an important factor in the increasing popularity of VOD services in Poland. This increase is also due to a change in consumer preferences. On the other hand, the fragmentation of content on the market leads to a rotation of users between platforms. People switch SVOD service providers from time to time to watch what they want and then move to another platform. People pay for a few months' subscription to watch new seasons of their favorite series or premiere movies, then they cancel for a period of time and go to another platform. This 'circle' practice is a common thing, especially among the younger generations. Recently, the media has often talked about the plans of streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix), describing ideas to introduce cheaper ad-supported options on the Polish market. According to the latest PMR study, conducted in mid-2024, almost a quarter of Poles would be interested in such an offer. Slightly more than half of VOD users wouldn't agree to watch ads and pay a lower price, preferring to pay more for the ad-free option. The remaining 25% are undecided and willing to consider all options. The theme of increasing demand for well-organized, clean and uncluttered SVOD services is coming back like a boomerang. Streaming is taking over cable and satellite TV customers every day. There's not much time left for old-school TV entertainment. Soon TV channels will only be available as part of the content on streaming platforms. MEET THE TEAM | Marek Tymecki- IR and M&A Manager 👨‍💼 ↳Marek Tymecki's journey with Sescom Europe began in a unique way back in 2016. His interest in the company wasn’t sparked by a job ad, but rather his personal desire to work for Sescom Europe. At that time, Marek was working at a consulting firm in Tri-City, focusing on investment projects and preparing companies for their debut on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. However, he soon realized that he preferred to contribute to a single company, rather than being an external contractor. After persistent follow-ups and four interviews over 1.5 years, Marek finally joined Sescom Europe. ↳Since joining the team, Marek has been part of key moments in the company’s growth.
