#MPA and PSA Singapore have successfully completed a four-month trial with six barge operators, allowing for the safe movement of line-towed container barges to and from Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) at night between 7:00 pm and 6:30 am. This initiative was part of MPA’s ongoing efforts to review its rules and regulations to reduce business costs and turnaround time, enhance resource #optimisation, while ensuring safety. Previously, night movement for line-towed container barges was only permitted at Brani and Keppel Terminals, where navigational traffic is less complex than around PPT. To ensure the safe movement of line-towed container barges at night at PPT, MPA will implement additional #safety measures that were successfully tested with barge operators and PSA during the trial. These measures include compulsory #pilotage for the barges, restrictions on the length of towing lines, and close monitoring of barge movements by MPA’s vessel traffic management system. All night movements of line-towed container barges to and from PPT must also receive prior approval from MPA. QatarEnergy to build 6 giant LNG carriers at Chinese shipyard. Additional contract with Chinese shipbuilder CSSC will expand Qatari fleet to 128 vessels. QatarEnergy and the China State Shipping Corporation (CSSC) have agreed to build six QC-Max class liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. The contract will expand the Qatari fleet to 128 vessels, including 24 QC-Max. The tankers will be built at the facilities of the Hudong-Zhonghua enterprise (Shanghai), owned by CSSC. The first gas carriers with a capacity of 271 thousand cubic meters will be delivered in 2028-2031, they may become the largest in history. The cost of the contract is not disclosed. However, according to the Qatari company, it paid $8 billion for the existing 24 gas carriers. Recall that Qatar, the third largest LNG supplier in the world, is developing a giant gas field in the Persian Gulf, the Qatari part is called North, the other is Iranian and is called South Pars. MOL adds to LNG dual-fuel VLCC orderbook. Japan’s Mitsui OSk Lines (MOL) has lifted its LNG dual-fuelled VLCC order tally in China. Multiple shipbroking sources have reported that the Tokyo-based shipping giant has contracted two additional 309,000 dwt newbuilds at Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) for nearly $300m. The largest shipping company in Japan in dwt terms is listed with more than 20 VLCCs with now six more units set to deliver from DACKS between 2025 and 2028. In August 2022, MOL became the first Japanese company to order LNG-fuelled VLCCs. The MOL order was also the first confirmed for VLCCs since June 2021 bringing to an end a record ordering drought for the supertanker sector. This was followed by a roughly $260m order for two more newbuilds in 2023.

For the upcoming Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) design challenge, Justin Wee & Associates Pte Ltd (JWA) is proposing a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) concept with double ended symmetry. SWATH boats comprise twin torpedoes (demi-hulls) on which rest vertical struts & capped off with a topsides deck. The narrow vertical struts pierce the air-water interface, resulting in a small waterplane area. A small waterplane area floating body attracts minimal wave loading & consequent wave induced motions. The leading edge of the struts cut through the water. Water particle elliptical orbits of waves decay exponentially with depth. Therefore a submerged body far away from the sea surface attracts little wave loading. The metacentric radius is the ratio of second moment of area (waterplane area moment of inertia) & volume displacement. Parallel axis theorem can be used to calculate the waterplane moment of inertia of the vertical struts. Of particular concern are regions where there is an abrupt change in geometry i.e. where the struts meet the torpedoes & where the struts meet the topsides platform. The oil & gas analogue is the semi-submersible platform a.k.a column stabilised unit. Instead of struts, four vertical columns resting on dual pontoons pierce the water surface. When the semi-sub is floating on its pontoons, at the point where the pontoons become fully submerged, there is a sudden change in waterplane area. Care must be taken at this transition point. The wheelhouse has forward & aft control consoles. So the helmsman needs only swivel his chair around to go into reverse mode (double ended). The SWATH boat can also turn on a dime with twin deck-mounted hanging azimuth thrusters on centreline forward & aft. A davit launched dinghy is provided as a fast rescue craft. Oil dispersant spray booms are provided for pollution control. Fire monitors are provided for external firefighting. Landing sites are provided for unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Seating for 5 harbour pilots & 5 port state control officers is provided. Dubbed ‘Aqua Cutter’, the boat has been designed to meet MPA’s stated requirements. FueLNG Achieves 200th Ship-to-Ship (STS) LNG Bunkering in Singapore with CMA CGM Bahia FueLNG, a pioneer in liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in Singapore, has successfully completed its 200th ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation. The milestone operation was conducted by FueLNG Venosa, delivering 9,000 cubic metres (cbm) of LNG fuel to CMA CGM Bahia on 29th June at the Raffles Reserve Anchorage in Singapore. This vessel is part of a new generation of six CMA CGM containerships featuring “biomethane and e-methane ready” engines and an enhanced aerodynamic design. SEA-LNG COO, @Steve Esau spoke to @Jeslyn Lerh from @Reuters last week at @Singapore Maritime Week (SMW). Steve shared his insights and projections for the future of LNG in shipping.   As reported by Reuters, Steve expects ‘there will be more than 1,000 dual-fuel LNG vessels operating by the end of 2027, compared with around 400 now. Esau called for more investment in barges dedicated to delivering LNG with limited lifting capacity in Singapore, where three firms are licensed to supply LNG as bunker fuel according to the port authority.’ These barges would provide considerable support, improving bunkering capability for the scaling volumes of LNG supplied at ports around the globe.   Investing in the LNG pathway now is more important than ever. With stringent environmental regulations tightening, shipowners and operators must look for realistic, practical solutions to decarbonise the global fleet. LNG’s global bunkering infrastructure continues to expand worldwide, offering significant emissions reductions from traditional marine fuels and giving LNG an availability head start on other alternative fuels. SGX Daily Momentum (27 May 2024) 1. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings Ltd (SGX:BS6) traded near its 52 weeks high following a strong 1Q2024 business update. The company reported a record orderbook of US$16.1 billion as of 24 May 2024, with 193 vessels scheduled for delivery through to 2028. CGS International reiterates an ‘add’ call on the stock with a target price of S$1.96. 2. Mermaid Maritime PCL (SGX:DU4) shares traded above average volume within its 52-week high range. Although the share price has been rising rapidly, our Trendspotter update today indicates potential short-term exhaustion, suggesting a possible reversal. 3. SATS Ltd (SGX:S58) saw a 272.3% increase in trading volume compared to its 10-day average. According to this morning’s Trendspotter update, the stock is showing positive signs and may continue to rise. 4. Nio Inc (SGX:NIO) and Geo Energy Resources Ltd (SGX:RE4) experienced share price surges of 13.8% and 6.6%, respectively.
