#NoBurnWednesday GAIA members Consumer_Penang CAP and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) have urged the Malaysian government to cancel proposed Waste-to-Energy (WtE) incineration projects and shift towards a zero waste approach. In their memorandum, CAP and SAM highlight the environmental, economic, and health risks associated with WtE incinerators, which divert resources from sustainable solutions. As extreme temperatures rise, so does the demand for electricity, placing immense strain on Southeast Asia’s power infrastructure. During heatwaves, the efficiency of transmission systems declines, and the output of thermal power plants, which provide most of the region’s electricity, is limited. The Future of Data Centres in Light of Net Zero Commitments https://lnkd.in/gSGhnrft Statista’s latest market projection shows a significant rise in the number of Data Centres within the APAC region. I was surprised to learn that Hong Kong is fifth, with 122. At 11 Data Centres per 100km2 we have one of the high densities of Data Centres in the world. But how does this sit with Net Zero Commitments, given that Hong Kong’s energy mix is fossil-fuel based with few renewable options? From our experience with Data Centre operators, it’s clear that we need a strategic approach that blends sustainability and ESG into operations. Decarbonisation efforts should focus on renewable energy and address all Scope emissions – especially Scope 3 – covering material sourcing and waste management. By embedding sustainable practices and creating a solid sustainability roadmap, Data Centre operators can balance rapid growth with their Net Zero commitments. #datacentre #energytransition #sustainability #esg #decarbonisation

We are so excited to officially launch the Net Zero-X exchange here in Singapore. Net Zero-X is designed to tackle the significant financing gap that impedes the global transition to a #NetZero future.  According to the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), a group of 105 central banks and financial supervisors, spending on physical assets on the course to #NetZero needs to reach about US$275 trillion by 2050, or US$9.2 trillion per year on average. Considering there is approximately USD$1 Trillion of sustainable capital currently being mobilised to address the #ClimateEmergency, the world is falling significantly short of what’s needed. Net Zero-X stands at the forefront of the global #sustainability revolution, providing a crucial link between impactful projects and the capital needed to bring them to fruition. Singapore's Energy Market Authority is collaborating with SP Group to develop a Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap. The roadmap will outline challenges associated with the changing context of Singapore’s power system and identify key focus areas to transform the electricity grid to manage new complexities. The focus areas include: Harnessing distributed energy resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage systems and electric vehicle chargers, to enhance grid resilience by providing energy, ancillary services or demand response services to shift energy usage to off-peak periods. Enhancing grid planning, control and maintenance efforts such as through the development of digital solutions and distributed energy resources management system to optimise manpower and reduce manual processes. Building integrity within Japan's VCM has been a key factor from the outset. Adopting the principles of VCMI's Claims Code of Practice (CCP) will help deliver projects of high integrity that clearly demonstrate additionality, transparency and verifiability.    Japan has adopted an innovative and unique approach to scale its #VCM via its #ETS. IMDA launched the Green Data Centre (DC) Roadmap today that charts a sustainable pathway for the continued growth of DCs in Singapore. The Roadmap aims to provide at least 300 megawatts of additional capacity in the near term, with much more through green energy deployments. It outlines IMDA’s plans to partner the industry to push boundaries and accelerate DC sustainability on two fronts: Energy Efficiency: Accelerate DC’s energy efficiency at hardware and software levels and allow industry and end-users to put in place best-in-class technologies to maximise efficiency, capacity and economic potential. Green Energy: Accelerate DCs’ use of green energy to expand capacity, and explore how to deploy this at scale over time to maximise space for continued DCs’ growth.
