The voices are coming definitive about the need of a supportive Singapore stock exchange for startups. One of Singapore's legendary investors Boon Hwee Koh, who also happens to be the chairman of SGX, chimes in. In his letter to SGX shareholders, he explained that "Should [SGX} fail to enable venture capital and private equity to exit their investments and recycle the capital deployed, the supply of such capital will eventually dry up and threaten the start-up ecosystem that Singapore has built and nurtured over the past decades." In the past 20 years, startups operated independently of the SGX, where trade sales and US IPOs were the norm for exits. As a venture capitalist, TRIVE's focus is on exits for my SouthEast Asian based portfolios, and IPOs are one of the main avenues to achieve an exit and a return on my investments. 5 of our startups are considering their IPO plans in the coming 3 years. After advisory from the M&A advisors and internal consideration, the NASDAQ is the choice for 4 of 5 of them. Only one decided on the local SGX as it is on a more traditional path. Nevermind if these startups are primarily operating in SEA and naturally should find familiarity with SGX to list. Unfortunately, they see better valuations, liquidity and brand recognition by listing on the NASDAQ. It has been a long-time complex issue to energize the SGX and to ask our SEA startups to call it home. It is a pity because Singapore is the prime location for private equity and venture capital fundraise for startups in the region. But SGX barely sees any of our SEA unicorns listed on it. I for one, am a believer of a regional bourse to support the aspirations of the startups. And I hope more deeper conversations with the Singapore government and our relevant associations will one day see the SGX building that vision. What has changed for medical investment in China during this “Capital Winter”? I was in Korea last week but didn’t miss out on the Gaorong Capital高榕资本’s Annual Healthcare CEO Conference & Demo Day in Shanghai. It’s a close-door event hosted by Gao Rong, a leading VC in China, attended by representatives from their healthcare portfolio companies, LPs, and other investment partners. It was a great opportunity to share my thoughts on why Chinese healthcare innovators need a mindset shift to achieve their Go Global aspirations. It was also a valuable learning experience for me. Here are a few takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ New Opportunities in the “Capital Winter”: While people are talking about the "capital winter" in China, funding is still available there, and it's still more substantial compared to many other parts of the world. However, new IPO regulations have made exits significantly harder, leading investors to become more cautious and selective. They are increasingly exploring alternative opportunities, such as overseas deals and acquisitions of corporate assets. 2️⃣ Survival of the Fittest: Biotech companies that once saw big investments in China are now facing tough times for the subsequent rounds due to IPO challenges. Only those with strong resilience and adaptation are likely to survive, while others may disappear. This may not be a bad thing, as it's a natural process to eliminate excess and encourage more rational competition. 3️⃣ Increased Focus on Commercial Viability: With IPOs becoming difficult, investors are paying more attention to the commercial growth of their companies. They’re helping with business development, fundraising, and even global expansion. No one knows how long this "winter" will last, but investors are finding creative ways to support their portfolio companies and each other.  🌍 It’s all about adapting and staying strong! [Hasangyong met: John Yang, director of Riverwood Capital] There was a meeting to explore opportunities for local start-up teams to enter the global market. At the Invest Korea Summit 2024 event held at COEX in Seoul, I met John Yang, the director of Riverwood Capital Asia. It could have been awkward, but since I had already met my wife, it was my first smooth meeting. John Yang is in charge of Asia for a large investment company that conducts Series C and D investments in Silicon Valley, and as a Korean investor, he was very interested in Korean companies. Through this meeting, we introduced the current status of artificial intelligence and future mobility industries, which are specialized industries in Gwangju, and promised to discuss more specific cooperation measures in the future. "Efforts to create Gwangju with a high success rate for start-ups will continue." <Riverwood Capital> Riverwood Capital has created a $1.8 billion (W2.33 trillion) fund. Riverwood will invest in high-growth mid-sized technology companies, with most of the new capital going into new investments, not follow-up ones. Riverwood, a growth-stage investor, mainly invests between $25 million and $100 million per company and invests in 20-30 companies per fund cycle. It has so far made more than 75 investments, with GoPro and Nextdoor among its investment companies successfully listed, and Forge Rock recently sold to a private equity fund.

He also cofounded San Si Institute, a community of entrepreneurial leaders who are committed to tackle big societal challenges. David who is a graduate of NTU, helps serve on boards of Nanyang Technological University Singapore ,CapitaLand & EDBI Pte Ltd ,has been investing in China for the last two decades , some investments include DiDi , Baidu, Inc. , Focus Group , Heptagon, Bona Films +++++. SGX needs “a flush of liquidity”, says Loke Wai San, the chairman of chip-tester AEM Holdings who famously led the company from its low share price of 7 cents to more than $5. As a co-founder of local private equity firm Novo Tellus, Loke helped AEM build up a strong institutional following, including securing Temasek as its single-largest investor with a stake of 12.5%. Loke is also known for launching one of the three spacs, known as blank-cheque listings, on SGX, although the potential of this would be unfulfilled as global market interest began to wane by the time the necessary processes were completed and SGX welcomed the three spacs. While he recognises that launching the spac was a form of risk-taking on his end, he adds that the capital market has to be welcome of risks, especially if investors desire something innovative with high equity. "China’s economy, like every other victim, subsequently entered into a liquidity trap or balance sheet recession. Private firms and households hunkered down, decreased economic activity, and saved money in order to repair their balance sheets. When credit demand falls amongst households and businesses, the standard-issue Keynesian economic medicine – i.e., running a modest fiscal deficit and lowering the price of money via central bank policy rate cuts – is ineffective. What is needed to forestall the dreaded deflation is a monetary and fiscal bazooka. The time it takes to switch into panic mode depends on a country’s culture. But make no mistake – regardless of the economic “-ism” supposedly practiced, every country always comes around to injecting monetary chemotherapy. I refer to this palliative treatment as chemotherapy because while it might cure the deflationary cancer, it ultimately kills the host. The host is the middle and lower classes, who are ravaged by asset price inflation with no discernible improvement in the real economy. And like modern oncology, this ultimately ineffective monetary chemotherapy is extremely profitable for a small cabal of financial witch doctors whose head offices are in New York, London/Paris/Frankfurt, Tokyo, and now possibly Beijing/Shanghai. Chinese people are some of the most resourceful people on this planet. They will not allow their precious yuan savings to sit idle as Beijing encourages asset price inflation. Bitcoin is not a foreign concept to middle and high income coastal urban dwellers. #Singapore drives #HealthTech funding across emerging markets! Emerging markets saw an average deployment of $36M per investor across the top 10 HealthTech backers, compared to an average of $148M in FinTech and $6.3M in Real Estate. #SoutheastAsian investors showed a clear dominance over the space, accounting for 30% of overall HealthTech funding with SeaTown Holdings International leading the charge. #Saudi-based BSF stood out as the lone MENA-based player on the list, while #Singapore claimed three out of ten spots.
