Setting up right and strong foundations when creating a company, is a must; more important than ever before. A company needs to have a PURPOSE and VISION. These have to be set as clear as possible by the founder(s) since its inception. Then VALUES. These will trickle down and used as the guidelines for everyone in the company to think and act. These are the backbones that will set the culture of the company. Founder/CEO cant just rely on those written and framed on the office wall. Purpose, Vision, and Values should not be something the team have to memorize. Rather, something they need to do. So, as the Founder/CEO, what you need to do is to LEAD BY EXAMPLE by always WALK THE TALK. As a VC, i would love to back this kind of company and founder. REDeFiNE TOMORROW 2024, brought together VC investors globally to exchange ideas. Meet Jason Choi, Co-founder of Tangent Ventures, Paul Veradittakit, Managing Partner of Pantera Capital, Jason Kam, Founder of Folius Ventures, and Haseeb Qureshi, Managing Partner of Dragonfly. 🚀 Choi, entered the crypto space in 2017, discussed Tangent as a Singapore-based angel fund. Tangent supports projects from the pre-seed stage and purchases tokens in liquid markets, selecting a few projects to invest in each year. Choi also mentioned the rise of investors and opportunities for smaller funds like Tangent to focus on pre-seed to seed investments. 🚀 Regarding applications, Choi believes that the market will increasingly focus on consumer-facing applications, as the line between apps and infrastructure blurs. 🚀 Paul Veradittakit also shared the history and goals of Pantera Capital as one of the first institutional investors in crypto and blockchain. Pantera differs from other funds in its global investments, long and short hedge funds and opportunistic investments such as buying secondary shares during bear markets. 🚀 On crypto applications, Veradittakit sees potential in mobile applications with crypto working in the background, where blockchain knowledge isn’t needed. Such as game apps, NFT loyalty programs and stablecoins for payments. 🚀 Jason Kam, focuses on liquid token and private investments, particularly in projects with founders in the Asia-Pacific region. Kam also commented on FOMO and VC investments, pointing out that it can happen when the cap table is strong, as it almost guarantees listing on high-level centralized exchanges and significant returns. 🚀 Haseeb Qureshi cited the 2021 cycle as an example when the crypto space was filled with venture capital, leading to improper allocation of funds. However, after the collapse of FTX, mainstream VCs withdrew, but crypto-native VCs continued to invest. Qureshi believes that crypto is now widely accepted and is a real investable asset. 🚀 On the issue of FOMO, Qureshi emphasized the importance of investors being stubborn and believing in their own convictions, even if the market thinks otherwise. He observed that the most successful investors in crypto are often stubborn. 🚀 Qureshi believes that the largest funds will become "takers," forced to pay market prices for capital allocation, while the smallest funds still generate significant returns with less invested capital. 🚀 Regarding applications, he believes that the market correctly values Layer 1 and Layer 2 infrastructure, as the main applications for crypto are primarily related to money, such as Digital Gold, programmable assets and DeFi. He also emphasized the need to develop scalability, usability and security to accommodate tens of millions of users, pointing out that blockchain in 2040 will be very different from today. Really enjoyed my conversation with Johnny Wu on the AAAIM High Emerging Leaders in Investment podcast. AAAIM is doing so much important work in highlighting the disparity and challenges Asian Americans face in the finance and investing world. Being an emerging fund manager, I am seeing it firsthand myself now. Their studies have found substantial AAPI underrepresentation at the ownership level – only 2.4% of firms, 1.8% of funds, and .3% of AUM in the US are AAPI-owned. When looking at AAPI women in particular, a staggeringly low .01% of US AUM is managed by AAPI women. This is all despite the fact that AAPI-owned funds outperform non-AAPI-owned funds across most asset classes on a capital-weighted average basis. Nearly half of AAPI-owned PE funds appear in the top performance quartile; over 50% of AAPI-owned VC funds achieve top quartile performance as well. AAPI-owned hedge funds yield monthly returns of .50%, significantly outpacing the .19% monthly returns of their non-AAPI-owned counterparts. I look forward to meeting other Asian American investment managers at AAAIM Elevate next week in Los Angeles to discuss these challenges and how we can overcome them as a community.

SoftBank Sells Off Vision Fund Assets as Son Pivots to AI, Chips Masayoshi Son turns away from aggressive style of venture capital investing, leaving the fund’s reduced staff to focus on exits SoftBank Group Corp.’s flagship Vision Fund has quietly sold off or written down billions of dollars’ worth of its publicly-listed holdings in recent years, a sign of founder Masayoshi Son’s shift away from the venture capital deals that were once an obsession and toward strategic investments in semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Since the end of 2021, the world’s biggest startup fund has seen its US-listed portfolio shrink by almost $29 billion, as it sold down stakes in companies such as Coupang Inc., DoorDash Inc. and Grab Holdings Ltd. and share prices fell, regulatory filings show.
