The critical importance of the cement industry for the UK has been a cornerstone of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association conference this year and repeated again by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero chief scientific officer today. Through the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) partnership with the Peak Cluster we will decarbonise over 40% of the UK’s cement and lime production providing net zero construction solutions at home, and abroad via exports, securing jobs and creating growth.

September is a monumental month for bp’s business in the UK as we celebrate 60 years of operating in the North Sea. That’s 60 years of providing energy, 60 years of pioneering and innovating, and 60 years of supporting skilled jobs, the supply chain and communities. It’s a tremendous honour to be leading the North Sea business as it marks this major milestone. But it’s also an extremely challenging time for our sector as we face headwinds that could impact plans and activity. As I say in the article, a successful oil and gas sector in the North Sea supported by our talented workforce and supply chain can, and should, be the catalyst for a successful energy transition. But a successful oil and gas sector in the North Sea can only continue to thrive if the conditions in which to do business are right, otherwise the UK could miss out as other regions prosper.  I’m proud to work for this fascinating sector here in the North Sea and that makes me even more determined to do everything I can to set it up for success now and in the future, building on bp’s 60-year legacy here. Chevron is set to exit the North Sea, selling its 19.4% stake in the Clair field, one of the UK's largest hydrocarbon resources. This move, part of their regular asset review, follows previous sales and aligns with their strategy to optimise their portfolio. The sale, potentially raising up to $1bn, comes amid their $53bn acquisition of Hess, currently facing a legal battle with ExxonMobil. Parkmead announces the formal award of UK Licence P2634 - Blocks 14/15a, 14/20d, and 15/11a Parkmead, an independent energy company focused on expanding its portfolio through gas, oil, and renewable energy projects, has been formally awarded the P2634 licence by the UK Government's North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA). This license covers Blocks 14/15a, 14/20d, and 15/11a in the Outer Moray Firth. Parkmead, as the operator with a 50% interest, will work with Orcadian Energy (50% interest) to develop the Fynn Beauly discovery, a significant heavy oil resource in the UK. Fynn Beauly is a proven accumulation with an estimated oil-in-place ranging from 740 million to 1.33 billion barrels, offering a promising opportunity for commercialisation the partnership plans to utilize their expertise in developing challenging crude resources to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a viable development within the NSTA's Net Zero Strategy. Over a three-year work program, they will conduct geophysical, geochemical, reservoir modeling, and production technology studies to explore enhanced oil recovery techniques that can reduce oil viscosity and improve recovery rates. This may involve integrating polymer flooding with geothermal heat uplift to enhance production efficiency.

Having worked with #CCS projects, we have distinguished many pitfalls in storage capacity estimation that significantly affect the quality of the subsurface assessment and subsequently influence the decisions on the reservoir suitability for CO2 injection. Here are the top 3 pitfalls ⚠ I’d like to emphasize: 👉 Neglecting Reservoir Heterogeneity. Although little heterogeneity positively affects the retention of CO2 plume spreading, internal barriers like impermeable lenses, stratigraphic variations or faults can compartmentalize the reservoir, dramatically reducing usable storage space. In this case, the injected carbon dioxide would be trapped in smaller geological bodies preventing it from spreading throughout the targeted storage interval. Thus, compartmentalization limits the accessible storage volume which can result in optimistic capacity predictions and localized pressure builds-up if not properly accounted for. 👉 CO2 Trap Definition. Misinterpreting the trap geometry can lead to either conservative or optimistic estimates introducing significant risks to the project. If the trap boundaries are poorly understood, it becomes difficult to accurately simulate and track CO2 movement, which compromises the MMV (Measurement, Monitoring, and Verification) program. Both structural and stratigraphic features need precise mapping to ensure that the CO2 plume will remain within the trap. 👉 Caprock Integrity Issues. Well data often lack the intervals needed to fully capture and describe the geomechanical and petrophysical properties of caprocks as surveys have been aimed to characterize reservoirs. This limitation makes it difficult to distinguish subtle lithological changes, fractures, and thinner zones of the caprock that potentially create pathways for CO2 escape. Poor seal properties as well as natural or injection-induced fractures reduce containment generating unpredictable plume migration patterns. Thus, incomplete caprock characterization may lead to overestimating its ability to contain carbon dioxide increasing risks of plume leakage through undetected weak zones. Carbon dioxide storage assessment requires comprehensive geological expertise and precise solutions to mitigate risks associated with these and other pitfalls. High-time our politicians focused on the long-term emissions goals rather than short-term point scoring. Although bp's decision to cut oil and gas output by 25% by 2030 has sparked massive debate, is anyone really surprised? The UK alone relies on oil and gas for 75% of its total energy, currently importing 40%. How much will this rise over the next few years in our quest to "save the planet"? Across the entire UK, 17.1% of households are in fuel poverty (3.26 million in England alone). The UK has already managed to make basic energy a luxury for millions, quite the achievement for a first world country. With these stats in mind, BP’s decision to maintain oil and gas output can be considered a good thing. When so many people are struggling to afford basic heating in the first world, cutting energy production only drives prices higher and makes life even harder for those already on the edge. In regions like sub-Saharan Africa, 600 million people are still lacking access to electricity. Oil-powered generators are the only means to keep life-saving equipment like incubators and ventilators operational. These resources are also critical for pumping and purifying water in regions where clean drinking water is a struggle. It’s not all doom and gloom, BP’s decision reflects a simple truth: we need balance. Oil and gas aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. They’ve been the backbone of affordable, reliable energy for decades, and they can't just be replaced overnight. Instead of pushing for drastic cuts that could hurt people, we should be looking at how to make oil and gas cleaner and more efficient. As it appears that the reduction in European pipeline imports from Norway may be mostly resolved by the end of this week, we await to see the overall impact that this event will have to the evolution of the European gas market. In this context, it is helpful to place recent market trends in context by using the current state of European gas storage. Europe has been injecting into storage in the last month at a lower rate than what observed in most recent years for May. This happened as Asian demand for LNG increased and the market saw multiple disruptions to supply. Despite this, European storage remains above 2023's already exceptional levels for this time of the year. Moreover, thanks to the position in which the market exited winter, even if the low injection rate seen in the last 30 days was to continue, Europe would still be able to approach full capacity by early October, as happened last year. While supply disruptions and trader behavior have been creating volatility in prices in the short-term and the LNG market has been slowly tightening compared to March, the overall picture for Europe's supply ahead of the winter season has not changed materially compared to then, when prices were much lower. Further and more prolonged increases in demand from either Asia or Europe, or alternatively permanent supply disruptions (such as the possible cut in Russian supplies due to the outcome of ongoing arbitrations) are likely to be required for this short-term volatility to turn to a consistently higher-price market environment. #naturalgas #lng #gasprices
