With the date for the next UK General Election having been announced yesterday, I thought I'd have a look at what it would take to create an election results map using Power BI and the forthcoming Icon Map Pro. Well it turns out it's super easy! Bespoke #PowerBI Day 1 of 2 training delivered at Panth****, FS. For the day 1, we went through: 👉 Getting data from 12 data sources both on prems and cloud sources. 👉 Different techniques to clean and transform data in the PQ. 👉 Understand and Manage Snowflake and Star Schema Relationships. 👉 Understand the importance of Primary and Foreign Keys in Dimension and Fact Tables. 👉 Understand and knowing when to use DAX Calculated Columns and DAX Measures. 👉Create Fiscal Period-based calendar dimension table using DAX Calculated Columns including chronological ordering of Month, Weekday and Fiscal Period. 👉 Author tons of explicit DAX Measures including Time Intelligence calculations to track KPI's. 👉 Data modelling best practices. ❄ Snowflake Vs Databricks 🏗 I've noticed a bit of a shift in the last 6 months or so. Databricks requirements seem to be (for us at least) more prominent than Snowflake. I had a really interesting chat with one of the founders of a leading Snowflake partner at Big Data LDN on where he thinks Snowflake is heading in comparison to Databricks. Is Databricks going to rule supreme? Will Snowflake be back? Is Fabric going to overtake them both? What are your thoughts? #snowflake #databricks #fabric

Today I returned to pgAdmin4 as I aimed to host my database, little did I know my notes wouldn't help me as much as I had hoped. The last time I made an RDS DB instance was in late April after starting ( and promptly dropping ) an app focused on the Sports industry. Originally I made all the tables while learning pgAdmin4, and when I went to connect there were so many issues I didn't account for. The process ended up with me learning to make a recovery file to clone over my existing db into this new RDS instance. I WROTE IT ALL DOWN. I told myself the next time I decided to use AWS and power up an RDS instance it would be smooth sailing. Then came the connection timeouts from who knows where. I had to make things publicly accessible this time around when somehow in the previous instance creation (if I recall correctly) I set the accessibility to No! I had configured in that instance some security group rules that allowed me to connect, and did similarly in this go around. I ended up copying the settings from my previous table down and being able to connect and create my tables locally. Wrote down every step I took to get it running, and a part of me still wonders what did the trick. I felt like I repeated the same process three times and got different results each time! The bright side is I didn't have any tables made yet, so no recovery or cloning attempts today! In the end, I managed to connect FastAPI & SQLAlchemy to pgAdmin4 / RDS too. First time experimenting with FastAPI, but plenty of experience with SQLAlchemy. It's rather bittersweet to be back to SQLAlchemy, the place where it all started. While a part of me is saddened I won't dive into a new ORM relatively soon, I'm excited to deepen my understanding with the one that's supported me thus far! No pictures today, today was just dissecting code from this tutorial that helped me connect with everything! Happy that issue after issue today with this RDS Instance I just kept rolling with the punches. I’m probably going to let rip on the next person to lecture me on ETL vs ELT. The whole #data industry appears to think that there’s a clear distinction between them… and “The Industry” is just wrong, no matter what the vendors pay us to say. More than 90% of the systems I’ve worked on for a couple of decades across hundreds have customers have been too complex to let a single shonky ETL tool do all the heavy lifting. Most data warehouses (call it a lake, and we might properly fall out) are ELTL. One of these days, us #data folk will realise that there’s no “one true way” of doing things… if that’s the message we want to spread, then AI would have taken our jobs by now. Now that we’re all clear that people who don’t use git/dbt/airflow etc don’t give two hoots about which order we put our letters, can we just focus on delivering some value, and quickly, please? Rant over.

Final testing of Icon Map Pro for Power BI using some open planning data of Kingston from the London General Assembly. Checking that the conditional formatting for fill colours, line colours, line widths and transparencies are all working. I've also used Power BI's new slicer visual to create a quick and simple legend / selector, bound to the same conditional formatting. Having recently had a heightened interest in stream processing and streaming sql. I came across KSQL and how it can be used with Kafka can anyone shed any light as to why this isn’t more supported from Confluent. There seems very little thought into how it would be productionised and how version controlled sql could be deployed to the servers. I have started my own attempt at firstly just getting sql stored in a git repo deployed to a KSQL_DB server instance running on docker with my Kafka instance and then secondly I want to try building a DBT adapter for this as this would essentially solve the version control issues. KSQL seems a really powerful and easy to use solution, I know there are alternatives such as apache flunk but that seems like a lot more over head for those not wanting to use confluent cloud. #dataengineering #kafka #datastreaming #ksql #dbt
