Customer Service: The Art of Connection During The ASE Group’s retreat, another session by Jahin Tanvir that truly resonated with me was on the topic of customer service. It was more than just a discussion; it was an exploration of how to connect with customers in a meaningful and intimate way, as a young entrepreneur with a very personal business, this is so important to me. So I’m going to break down this complex skill into four key aspects that can transform the way we interact with others in business and beyond. 1. Smile The first form of communication often isn’t verbal—it’s a smile. This simple, yet powerful gesture sets the tone for any interaction. Smiling shows interest, warmth, and a genuine desire to connect. It’s the first step in making your customer feel valued and understood. A smile can break barriers and create an environment of trust and openness. 2. Listen Listening is more than just hearing words; it’s about being fully present and engaged in what the customer is saying. I am going to emphasise the importance of being obsessed with solving the customer's problem. You can't provide a solution if you don’t fully understand the issue. Active listening not only helps you learn more about your customer’s needs but also shows them that you care. 3. Be Confident Confidence is key in any customer interaction. If you don’t appear confident, it’s hard for customers to take you seriously. Confidence doesn’t mean knowing all the answers, but it does mean approaching each interaction with assurance and a willingness to find solutions. Building confidence takes time, but it’s a crucial element in gaining the trust of your customers. 4. Going the Extra Mile Exceeding customer expectations is what sets exceptional service apart from the ordinary. Its so important to offer more than what is expected. This could be through personalised recommendations, follow-ups, or simply showing that you’re willing to go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. This extra effort can turn a satisfied customer into a loyal advocate for your brand. The Essentials: - Patience: Great service requires patience. It’s important to take the time to understand the customer’s needs without rushing them. - Honesty: Always be transparent and honest in your dealings. Trust is the foundation of any relationship. - Feedback: Be open to receiving both positive and negative feedback. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. The Golden Rule: At the heart of my message is this essential golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Show empathy, understanding, and kindness. In the end, customer service is about human connection, and treating others with the respect and care you wish to receive will always lead to better relationships and outcomes.
