"Media Practitioners: Transformative Career Shift from Journalism" Sundays are good days and I always find time to reflect. I was talking to someone, on phone who asked me about a media personality called Alex (RIP). The caller had no idea that this radio icon passed on in 2022, I was shocked, but I delivered the news. After the call I reflected on something that keeps bothering me about media practitioners who eventually just walk out of their jobs and serve other disciplines. Not a bad thing but it seems like many just use media and journalism to get to where they want to go. Bad thing. If you have noticed in uganda, and other countries their is a certain trend: many talented journalists are depart. Notable figures from WBS, UBC, NTV, NBS, Capital Radio, Sanyu FM, KFM, Bukedde, CBS, Dembe, Akaboozi etc, are now pursuing other paths, raising questions about financial motives versus personal interests, and the profession. Financial instability, coupled with threats to press freedom, drive these departures, leaving a void in mentorship for the next generation. To remedy this, media houses must offer fair compensation and job security. Strengthened press freedoms and diversified revenue streams are also crucial. An Ode to Advertisement (after leaving🥲) Advertising spoils you with an endless array of perks. After a seven-year odyssey through its diverse landscapes, I'd become so accustomed to the industry's spoils that their allure had begun to fade. For the last seven years, the only office environment I'd ever known was the chaotic, exhilarating madhouse of media and advertising. I'd never peeked inside any other kind of workplace except this ever-whirling world, always pumped with extremely creative people, continuously bombarding the table with kick-ass ideas, and filled with wit and high spirits. It's a constant whirlwind of brilliant ideas, quirky minds, and infectious enthusiasm, where the air crackles with creativity. This is what I've called "work" for years, and yet, I've found myself complaining. (sigh!) Little did I know how deeply entrenched I'd become in this vibrant, fast-paced industry. As a scholar at heart, I'd often contemplated a more "serious" path, never realizing how deeply the free breeze of this advertising adventure had spoiled me with its countless perks and made me incapable of breathing outside this peppy and cool, easy-breezy neighborhood. I really don't know how hierarchy functions in a formal setting. I've never called anyone "sir" or "ma'am" in my entire professional career. I've learned and grown immensely without the burden of constant supervision. Instead of being micromanaged, I've been encouraged to explore and experiment. It's fascinating how the advertising industry cultivates individuality, while most professions demand conformity and adherence to strict structure. No rule is the sole rule in advertising. This world always inspires the craziest idea one could conceive. A stark contrast to the rigid structures of most professions, advertising offers a refreshing absence of constraints, allowing madness to flourish. Yes, this crazy dynamic can only exist in advertising, and this is the only professional playground where this kid can still survive. It's clear that I've found my tribe. The advertising industry has not only provided me with a livelihood but has also become my way of life. I've explored various paths, but advertising remains my home. A place where I can be as wild and imaginative as I want while still making a living. 🥲 After leaving advertising, I realized how lovingly this industry had spoiled me for so many years. It's only been a month, and the 'viraha' is unbearable. I'm dying to get back ASAP to this craziness where you are encouraged to break the rules. Hi friends, My story on how revenues from selling streaming rights will grow higher and fetch more revenues to producers than theatrical revenues in the next four years. Rajesh N Naidu Revenues from the sale of digital or streaming rights of films are likely to show higher growth and fetch more revenue to film producers than from theatres in the next four years, according to a recent Media Partners Asia report. Revenues from selling streaming rights of films are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.2% to $1.1 billion (about Rs 9,130 crore) by 2028 from $0.8 billion (about Rs 6,640 crore) in 2024, the report estimated. In comparison, revenues from theatres are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6% to US$ 0.6 billion (Rs 4,980 crore) in 2028 from US$ 0.5 billion (Rs 4,150 crore) in 2024, it said. “Premium video on demand revenues, both advertising and subscription, are outpacing traditional box office growth,” said Mihir Shah, vice president, Media Partners Asia. “As the market expands, streaming majors will continue to invest heavily in local original content, particularly movies. In recent years, to deepen their market presence, established players have also focused on acquiring rights to successful regional movies, given the longer timelines involved in commissioning web series.” At present, there are 59 streaming platforms in India. Analysts say that increasing competition among streamers to grab more and more content in creating bigger and more easily accessible libraries for subscribers will drive investments in acquiring films. According to Media Partners Asia, in the next five years, India’s online video industry has a potential to attract investments close to $17 billion. Between 2018 and 2023, investments in local entertainment including scripted, unscripted and sports programming increased to $5.8 billion from $3.3 billion, said the report. Film trade analyst Komal Nahta said, “The growth in revenues from the sale of digital rights may be higher than the growth in revenues from theatrical in the coming years. This is a strong possibility. The habit or ritual of going to theatres every weekend is no longer the norm. A large section of the audience comes to theatres only when spectacular films like Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali or RRR come to theatres.” It is estimated that there are more than 200 unreleased Hindi films that producers are finding it difficult to release in theatres.
