The new bi-monthly service enhances MCT’s connectivity with key international markets in Hong Kong and Taiwan through the ports of Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Shekou, Subic, and Cebu, according to MCT parent company International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI). It further strengthens the role of Cagayan de Oro-based MCT, as an important gateway for trade in Mindanao, the company said. “This new partnership with Evergreen and Wan Hai further demonstrates our commitment to providing enhanced connectivity to Mindanao’s exporters and importers,” MCT chief executive officer Aurelio Garcia said in a statement. “As we continue to grow and expand our network, we’re confident that this new service will bring greater value to the region’s agricultural sector and foster economic growth,” Garcia added. Evergreen’s MV Ever Core, a 1,984 twenty-foot equivalent unit-capacity vessel, operates the service alternate with Wan Hai Lines’ Mindanao–Hong Kong–Taiwan (MHT) service, which is designed to meet the timely export needs of coconut by-products. “The additional capacity and improved schedules will help ensure that agricultural exporters can reliably meet the increasing demand from international buyers of one of Mindanao’s primary exports,” ICTSI said. It noted that MCT continues to enhance its facilities and expand its service offerings, positioning itself as a vital hub for international trade in Southern Philippines. By increasing capacity and introducing new shipping line services, ICTSI said the terminal commits to supporting the region’s growth and providing timely, efficient trade solutions for customers.

A collaborative framework among the nations bordering the sea can enhance maritime security, ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and safe for trade. According to the World Bank, improved maritime governance in contested waters could lead to increased economic output across Southeast Asia, generating billions in additional income and creating jobs in various sectors, including shipping, fisheries, and tourism. Furthermore, nations that effectively manage their maritime rights can capitalize on the rich resources found beneath the sea. The South China Sea is believed to possess significant oil and natural gas reserves, estimated to be worth trillions of dollars. By fostering cooperation rather than confrontation, countries in the region can jointly explore and exploit these resources, which can subsequently contribute to their economic development. A Call for Multilateral Cooperation To achieve a redimensioned South China Sea, it is essential for regional stakeholders to engage in open dialogue and multilateral cooperation. The South China Sea is crucial for both Asian and global trade, as this vital maritime corridor facilitates a significant portion of the world's shipping traffic. Approximately one-third of global maritime trade passes through these waters, underscoring its importance for international commerce (HBR, 2023). The South China Sea is not only a strategic hub for oil and natural gas resources but also a key route for goods traveling between major economies, including China, Japan, and the United States. Recent developments, such as the Philippines' assertion of its rights in the region under President Marcos, highlight the pressing need for multilateral cooperation and adherence to international law to ensure the freedom of navigation and overflight (Economist, 2023). The implications of a stable and well-managed South China Sea extend beyond regional dynamics, as disruptions in this area could lead to increased shipping costs, delays, and even conflicts that may reverberate throughout the global economy. My latest Supply Chain Matters Apple supply chain commentary focuses on Tim Cook's Southeast Asia business trip last week that has brought forth indications of added Asia based sourcing and production options to include Vietnam and Indonesia among other nations. I pose a rather question as to whether there will be considerations toward a US near-shored or domestic iPhone production presence to complement the various new advanced semiconductor processor fabs planned for the US over the coming 2-3 years. China’s Ministry of Commerce: Guiding Shipping Companies to Ensure Supply on Popular Routes to Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia November 22 – ZestShipping reports that at the State Council's routine policy briefing held by the State Council Information Office, Wang Shouwen, China’s International Trade Negotiator and Vice Minister of Commerce, stated that to address the negative impacts of the Red Sea crisis and port strikes on China’s foreign trade transportation, the Ministry of Commerce, in coordination with the Ministry of Transport, has organized supply-demand matchmaking activities among local foreign trade enterprises and international shipping companies. At the same time, the ministry is encouraging shipping companies to develop online platforms to meet booking needs, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. This initiative is already underway, with more shipping companies encouraged to provide online booking services for sea freight. Furthermore, the Ministry of Commerce, together with relevant authorities—especially maritime regulators—will guide shipping companies in optimizing route layouts to ensure sufficient capacity on popular trade routes to Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Average container prices in China, which were already on an uptrend, have spiked even further by 88 per cent in the last two months. I have received a number of calls from concerned business partners, and inquiries as to when rates are expected to stabilize. The crystal ball is a little cloudy, but the following video may provide some insight regarding the challenges the supply chain are facing now and into the very near future.

Credit to Glenn Taylor Tue, Jun 4, 2024 Singapore Port Congestion Sparks 7-Day Delays Amid Red Sea Fallout https://lnkd.in/gBijJrm7 The Red Sea crisis has had plenty of knock-on effects to the transportation of ocean freight worldwide, with major global ports now feeling the stress of shifting transit schedules. Severe congestion at the Port of Singapore is leading to berthing delays for ships lasting as long as seven days, according to data from container shipping analysis firm Linerlytica. Under normal conditions, a vessel waits about a half a day to berth at the port. The port is the second-largest in the world by total shipping tonnage handled after the Port of Shanghai, handling 39 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2023, but also is the largest transshipment hub. This is vital for global trade, as ships carrying goods can stop at the gateway to unload goods going to other ports, before loading additional cargo to be transported to their destination port. “Singapore has 450,000 TEUs of capacity right now waiting to get into the port or get out of the port,” said Goetz Alebrand, head of ocean freight Americas at DHL Global Forwarding. “That is even more than during the pandemic for Singapore itself, which is a big hub for intra-Asia and for east-west trade lanes.” According to the Linerlytica report, the severe congestion has forced some carriers to blank their planned Singapore port calls, which will further aggravate the problem at downstream ports that will have to handle additional volumes. The gateway links to more than 600 ports worldwide, with an average 140,000 vessels calling at the port annually. Container volumes handled in Singapore in the first four months of 2024 amounted to 13.36 million TEUs, an 8.8-percent increase in container volumes over the same period last year, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore said Thursday. From May 1 to May 23, the port received 999 ships, compared with just 639 in April, according to data from S&P Global Commodity Insights. The MPA said in a note that off-schedule arrivals have largely been to blame for the vessel-bunching effect, in which multiple ships reach a port at the same time, or within a short period. The authority contends that the average wait time for a berth is now two to three days while highlighting that it is only for container ships.

HMM Expands Capacity on PSX Service Amid Surge in Transpacific Volumes HMM has significantly increased the capacity of its Pacific Southwest Express (PSX) transpacific service in response to a surge in volumes from South Korea’s Incheon Port to the US west coast. Key Updates: New Deployment: HMM has now deployed seven 13,000-14,000 TEU ships on the PSX service. The deployment began with the newbuild HMM Emerald, which recently departed Incheon with 3,451 TEU loaded. This new ship replaces the previously used vessels ranging from 8,566 TEU to 11,100 TEU. Fleet Expansion: The other 13,000 TEU ships assigned to the PSX service include HMM Ruby, HMM Pearl, HMM Sapphire, HMM Topaz, HMM Opal, and HMM Turquoise. These ships will operate on a rotation that includes Incheon, Shanghai, Gwangyang, Busan, Los Angeles, and Oakland. Future Plans: HMM plans to deploy five more 13,000 TEU ships in the second half of the year, increasing the total number of such ships on the Asia-US route to 12. Collaboration with SM Line: Since February, HMM and SM Line have been exchanging slots on each other’s transpacific services, with SM Line participating in the PSX service. Impact on Incheon Port: Volume Increase: Between January and May, container shipments from Incheon to the US increased by nearly 77% year-on-year, reaching 21,960 TEU. Throughput Contribution: The PSX service contributes 120,000 TEU annually to Incheon Port's throughput. The deployment of larger ships is expected to boost volumes by an additional 40,000 TEU. Incheon Port Performance: Record Throughput: Incheon Port achieved an all-time high throughput of 1.79 million TEU in the first half of 2024, surpassing the previous peak of 1.7 million TEU in the first half of 2021. Export and Import Growth: Exports rose by 9% year-on-year to 871,592 TEU, while imports grew by 7% to 889,908 TEU. Used Car Exports: Incheon remains South Korea’s busiest port for used car exports, with 223,570 units moved in the first half of the year, of which 175,158 were transported in containers. Key Trading Partners and Commodities: Primary Markets: China remains Incheon’s largest trading partner. There have also been increased shipments to and from Vietnam, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Commodity Exports: Notable increases in the export of machinery, wood products, electrical equipment, and textiles. Commodity Imports: Significant rises in the import of plastics and chemicals. Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation's chief financial officer, Peter Su, has highlighted a disconnect between liner trade and shippers due to inadequate communication of freight delays. The disruption, caused by traffic throttling in the Suez Canal, is not up to lines to control or manage. Blanked sailings are becoming the norm due to schedule reliability issues. Lines cannot be blamed for skipped sailings due to capacity issues and equipment shortages. Attacks on vessels in the Red Sea could impact sea supply capacity by 20%.
