For those interested in the current status of port congestion at the Port of Singapore, PSA International has issued an official press release. The average vessel waiting time has been reduced to 2 days or less. This is excellent news. Well done to PSA Singapore, one of the world's most efficient transhipment hubs. Quote PSA Singapore (PSA), a major global transhipment hub, has significantly enhanced its capabilities to support increased activity and mitigate the impact of global supply chain disruptions since the beginning of 2024. This includes bolstering its frontline capacity, commissioning new berths at Tuas Port, and reactivating berths and yard space at Keppel Terminal. As a result, the average wait time at the port in recent weeks has been reduced to two days or less. Despite ongoing disruptions, including the Red Sea situation, supply chain demand and impact remain volatile. PSA remains committed to working alongside its customers during these uncertain times. My latest Supply Chain Matters Apple supply chain commentary focuses on Tim Cook's Southeast Asia business trip last week that has brought forth indications of added Asia based sourcing and production options to include Vietnam and Indonesia among other nations. I pose a rather question as to whether there will be considerations toward a US near-shored or domestic iPhone production presence to complement the various new advanced semiconductor processor fabs planned for the US over the coming 2-3 years. A shake-up of global supply chains is under way but trust in Singapore will ensure that there remains a place for the Republic in any new configurations that emerge, said Singapore’s Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong in a media interview. “The world is very different from when we started with the FTA 20 years ago. But trade will continue to be an important part of the global economy that will allow goods to be transferred and business to be done,” he said, smiting the doom scenario about trade that has gained traction today. “It may not be the same as 20 years ago; a lot more attention is being paid today to national security, to supply chain resilience,” said Mr Gan, in a reference to the heightened geopolitical rivalries and protectionist policies that have hurt global trade prospects. “As the hub, we want to be a key node in the supply chain. And if we are able to find a niche in it, then we can play to our strength in being the trusted partner in the supply chains,” he said. Average container prices in China, which were already on an uptrend, have spiked even further by 88 per cent in the last two months. I have received a number of calls from concerned business partners, and inquiries as to when rates are expected to stabilize.
