Singapore is no stranger to exceptional governance. For decades, the Lee family has been synonymous with principled leadership in this nation. But now, the leadership has been passed to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong—a momentous shift, yet deeply rooted in a tradition of unwavering and unchanging values. Why does this specific leadership change stand out to me? It's the values. One of the best things about Singapore is the absolutely immaculate governance. And the country possesses values on how to govern and, whether right or wrong, is consistent with its values. I think one of the things that is a hallmark of this transfer of values, the consistency with which this baton has been passed. Here are six key principles that remain our guiding stars: 1.⁠ ⁠Meritocracy: In Singapore, all children have the right to a formal education. Every Singaporean now has the opportunity to climb the social ladder, where their abilities—rather than their religion, race or origin—are what determine their success. 2.⁠ ⁠Racial and religious harmony: In Singapore, the freedom of speech and the press are seen as secondary to racial and religious peace. Any kind of discrimination against any religion is forbidden by the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act. Building a multiethnic community like Singapore, where different religions are practiced, depends on this. 3.⁠ ⁠A clean government: Singapore has implemented a zero-tolerance policy aimed at eradicating corruption from its civil service and government. 4.⁠ ⁠Rule of law: A World Bank analysis indicates that the most important element affecting a nation's development is its legal system. Because Singapore has a strong legal system built on solid governance, everyone is treated equally and fairly there. Businesspeople and investors can feel more confident knowing that their money is in a secure environment thanks to this. 5.⁠ ⁠Inclusiveness: Social justice is important to Singapore's growth plan. All of its people receive government subsidies for public transportation, housing, healthcare, and education, even though it does not want to be known as a welfare state. Singapore's social-economic structure is based on a special fusion of socialist and capitalist principles. 6.⁠ ⁠Care for the environment: Singapore’s commitment to protecting the environment remains vigilant and strong as ever as showcased within their policies. The beauty of this leadership transition lies not just in the change but in the consistency of these values. It's not just about a new face; it’s about the same unwavering ethos that ensures Singapore remains a beacon of governance. What can we learn? True leadership is not about an individual; it's about enduring values. It's about building on a legacy while paving the way for future generations. In an interview at #BrainstormAI in Singapore, Glean cofounder and CEO Arvind Jain shared that when he founded his previous company, Rubrik, he noticed a decline in productivity as the company grew compared to when it was a smaller organization. "We asked employees what was in the way of getting high productivity, and our surveys showed that people were really struggling to find information at work," he added. Some things in life are bigger and more important than business. Coming face to face with them can make one humble and deeply appreciative of the efforts of others. During my time in Malaysia as part of our Expanding Horizons Expedition, I had the privilege of meeting Kim Leng Wee, a top cybersecurity executive at REDtone, a leading telecommunications and digital infrastructure company.  But what left the most profound impact on me wasn’t our discussions about technology and business. Instead, it was visiting a place that Mr. Wee holds close to his heart—BrightFuture Learning Center, a school for neurodiverse children that he owns and passionately supports. The experience was an incredible and unexpected surprise—one that I’m grateful I got the opportunity to have. The BrightFuture Learning Center was filled with a warmth and energy that was immediately palpable. From the colorful walls to the laughter echoing in the halls, it was clear that this place was more than just a school—it was a community dedicated to growth and inclusion. It’s clear that this place is much more than a school; it’s a beacon of hope and progress for families from Malaysia, Australia, and even the USA. What makes Mr. Wee’s story even more inspiring is how he came to own the school. Initially, the school was struggling financially, but Mr. Wee stepped in and bought it from the previous owner. Under his leadership, the school has become 50% more affordable and a reference point for neurodiverse education in the region. This was a special learning experience for me, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to cross this bridge of understanding. As I reflect on this experience, I’m reminded that while we are busy building bridges in the business world, there are others, like Mr. Wee, who are building bridges of compassion and care. These are the bridges that truly change lives. This experience made me reflect on the broader responsibilities we have beyond business. I enjoyed attending the 2nd Gartner Tech Leadership exchange in SG a couple of weeks back, where Gartner’s analysts shared trends and insights on Generative AI to over 200 senior execs from APAC tech solution providers. Sharing some of the ideas that resonated with me: * Gen AI is moving from Pilots to Early deployments across Content consumption, Content creation and Technology creation use cases. 78% of new IT budget across enterprises for 2024 is going to Gen AI, with 44% of clients in SEA expected to deploy Gen AI in next 12 months.   * The next wave of Gen AI will be Vertical Multi-modal models. More than 50% of models will be industry specific by 2027 – driven by smaller size (implying cost & green efficiencies during scale-out), faster go-to-market (pre-trained on industry knowledge) and higher accuracy (thru domain knowledge). * AI Safety is already a key concern across jurisdictions to ensure there is no harm, with 42% of IT Execs citing “data privacy” as the most concerning risk of Gen AI. The use of enterprise guardrails will need to be coupled with Change Management given we won’t see a roll back of Gen AI. * “AI Agents” will be the norm across enterprise applications and software products. This is rapidly evolving to Multi-Agent frameworks, with bots working jointly and hierarchically. * IT service providers will arm enterprises with capabilities around AI Engineering, Gen AI application development and AI Model Management across the lifecycle for Gen AI & Traditional AI. In summary, Gen AI has the potential to drive transformational changes and many of our clients in Asia are well down this path. I was at #SFF24 & #WFIS-Jakarta recently and saw a growing focus on #dataprivacy and #dataresidency, something that is now working its way across #APAC. This shift I believe that stems from three key drivers: 1. Stricter Regulations: Landmark frameworks like #Singapore’s #PDPA and #India’s #DPDPAct are raising the bar for data protection and accountability. 2. Increased Public Awareness: High-profile #databreaches and #privacy scandals have heightened consumer vigilance about #personal information security. 3. Cyber Threats: The rise in #phishing attacks has pushed businesses and governments to prioritise #EnterpriseSecurity & #personaldata security measures urgently. While #DataPrivacy is about our right to control how our #personaldata is collected, used, and shared.#DataResidency speaks to where our data is stored geographically and the laws governing its use in that location. In the early days of the #Internet, we unknowingly exchanged personal-data for free services, making it the currency of the digital age. Now, with the rise of #Web3, the paradigm is shifting. Individuals are slowly taking control as custodians of their data, paving the way for decentralised and ownership-driven ecosystems. This new emerging reality raises some interesting questions. 1. One wonders how businesses will adapt their models to align with evolving privacy expectations? 2. Will data ownership foster new, collaborative ecosystems while disrupting traditional revenue streams?
