My mind's intrigued by the seeming complexity of esports' business side. It simultaneously breaks to see organization, noteworthy of solid business operations, to exit the scene. Not the first one recently 📉 💼 Case example: Acend European esports organization, previously part of Riot Games' ecosystem. Competing in their title "VALORANT". If you are not part of the smallest margin at the top (Tier 1 , call it "semi" closed franchise league ) it's impossible to see longevity for actions. Hence exit , despite being best team in the world two years back. Acend directs criticism towards tournament organizers. What's unique in this setting, is the fact that the games' developer (Riot) is also responsible for tournament organizing. Intermediary is removed, but so seems to be the interest to provide support. It puzzles my mind what could be done to support. Or what the organizations can even offer. Founded in 2014, Openspace Ventures is a multi-stage investor that looks at Southeast Asian B2C and B2B businesses with a compelling vision for expansion. The firm prides itself as using active intelligence to find and back companies creating transformational impact at the intersection of tech and life It looks at three types of targets: (a) Series A and B firms with an established product-market fit and need capital for rapid scaling, (b) Series C and D firms who are market leaders with proven revenue traction but need capital for expansion into new markets or adjacent spaces and finally, (c) firms that belong to the rising asset class of crypto and Web3. Openspace Ventures currently has 6 funds and over US$800 million under management, supported by regional institutional investors including pension funds, family offices and state investors.  The VC firm has over 45 portfolio companies under its belt and is one of the early investors into GoTo. Other notable investments include those in Finnomena, Halodoc as well as homegrown fashion label Love, Bonito. 2 crazy weeks of travelling, culminating in the yolo partners event. Here’s what happened: So I’m back now and going to take some time to catch up. (I promise to reply to everyone soon.) On stage at the Yolo event, I shared the stage with a few other Yolo portfolio companies and spoke about Blask to such an awesome crowd. I explain more about our product and journey - and the feedback is outstanding, but the work is so far from done. My fav quote from stage was: “We literally have just 5% of the features we plan to deliver. With the feedback and support we’ve received, we’re building an industry-driven project, and I couldn't be more grateful to be amongst all of you guys.” But what makes this event so special, is that I met a lot of cool people and exchanged ideas. - I spent more time with Pierre which was a true blessing. It's crazy that you have known a person for probably 4 years now but never realise how much you share in common. You are one of the most incredible people I have ever managed to chat with in this industry, - Then the guys from Forever Network - Nicholas and Alex - you are building a truly incredible and unique media company. It was incredible to meet you in person and hear about your plans. Have a clear goal on what you hope to get out of the event. Share this with a friend. The 2 of you should make a pact to motivate each other to get those goals done. Whether it’s collecting business cards, making meaningful connections, or attending specific sessions, having a partner in crime can boost motivation and make the experience more rewarding. Bet on it if that helps. When I was in SF, my buddy and I would set a KPI for how many business cards we would get at the end of the event (we trusted each other that it was quality conversations). Loser paid for dinner. Now, armed with these strategies, go forth and conquer your next event like a pro! 🙌

It occurred to me last weekend that my whole career has been dedicated to crisis management. But in a good way. After all, I’m fortunate enough to host live sports events for a living - and anything can happen in live sports. I was emceeing a football event at an open-air stadium here in Singapore when, for the third time at the two-day event, an electrical storm hit. The skies cracked open, our lightning-warning system kicked in (meaning a compulsory pitch evacuation), our primary electrical feed to microphones and audio equipment had to shut down… yet we had an event to deliver and an audience to service. So, we went into “crisis” mode, which for a host means: - Thinking on your feet and delivering an effective solution as soon as possible. - Figuring out how best to quickly put pre-planned contingencies into place - Coming up with technical or other solutions to ensure clear, effective communciation - Immediately finding and liaising with key decision-makers on the event team, to ensure that everyone is on the same page - Knowing enough has already been done to buy the goodwill of the audience, so they tolerate any change in schedule and deliverables - Communicating regular updates and information to all parties - Appearing confident and in command of the situation. That’s the theory. In practical terms, last weekend we mobilised our visiting star footballers to go into the public seating areas and corporate boxes to stage a Q and A, pose for photographs, sign autographs and entertain a crowd deprived of on-field action. We ripped up our schedule of supporting entertainment and presentations and delivered a new one, on the fly and based on what was possible under the new circumstances. And, as the event host, I was at the heart of it. As I have been, most typically in a live broadcast studio or on-site at the event, throughout my 30-year career. You might be surprised to hear this, but no live match coverage event goes 100 per cent to plan. There is always a deviation from the meticulously-developed running order at some point. And sometimes this actually leads to an improved product. Just as long as all those “crisis” actions I listed above are followed. Producers and event organisers trust me to handle their live events. And this means I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy a career, spent delivering quality events to the highest-possible standard. I have also gathered knowledge and tips along the way that can help your organisation and team - no matter what industry you may be in - learn how to handle dynamic, changeable and stressful situations in a calm and productive manner. I happily share this knowledge via workshops, talks and training calls that can be as short as 30 minutes. So, get in touch if you or your team would benefit from these pointers. 75 days. It’s been a hard summer. I resigned as Head of Launchpad & Incubation at Elixir Games Inc. I took these 75 days to recharge my energy and regain clarity.   75 days to reflect on web3 gaming.   75 days to grieve the love I lost.   75 days to reconnect with my family and embrace human vulnerability.  This summer brought many lessons.   The most important? Building your life and career with the right people is key.   As a builder, I’m not afraid of making tough decisions. My energy is my engine, and I reserve it for the right people.  Leaving Elixir Games was difficult, especially after all the incredible effort and collaboration with the team. I gave my all to that company, working as if it were my own. Today, I’m making a comeback as the Head of Gaming at Seedify. This also marks the beginning of something new—creating content around my passion: gaming. I’m excited to connect deeper with the Web3 builders’ community that I vibe with.
