Best decision I made thus far in my business and entrepreneurial journey, is to bring in Sulfya Lim as part of the cofounding team to GoTechUp last year. Now as we’re building our case studies and pipeline, we managed to get a leg in to run POC with two key partners, for two separate and key projects, one being in the automotive industry and another is a education government agency of a very prominent country..😜(P/S: we are bridging the industry- education gap) I am now settling my handover of business operations in Malaysia and I’m going ALL in to build on my startup (Tech Up Advance) … hope the Asia and Global market is ready for me! 🎯🎯 As we’re moving to the next chapter of our development, the three of us (Sulfya Lim and Kah Fai Lok) realised we have a big gap and funding (or lack of, being one) and we need more AMAZING brain that can balance our insecurities and gaps and someone who’s willing to be paid in sweat equity. We are now focused on intentionally scouting for another co-founder among our connections (of course the best in the field), venture builders who want to build and go through this amazing journey with me. Last night, I had the pleasure of catching up with old friends at a private dinner. Among them was Albert Moh, a dear classmate from Maris Stella High School and the visionary founder of Freshening Industries Pte Ltd. It was not just a gathering of old friends but also a celebration of Singaporean ingenuity and perseverance. Under Albert's leadership, Freshening has navigated numerous challenges to emerge as a beacon of innovation in the hygiene sector. From rigorous R&D efforts to navigating the complexities of attaining global certifications, their journey is a testament to what a differentiated offering, strong leadership and execution capability can achieve. Each attendee was gifted a range of products – a memento of their tangible impact. Reflecting on that evening, I notice similarities between Freshening’s journey and how our Vertex network of venture capital funds has built enduring technology and healthcare startups globally. At the core, it’s about three things: 1. Exceptional offering: A solution that solves a real problem and resonates with the market. 2. Strong founding team: Passionate and talented individuals who believe in the vision. 3. Flawless execution: The ability to navigate challenges and turn ideas into reality. Whether it’s developing hygiene products or building the next global champion, the core ingredients for success remain the same. Albert’s journey is a powerful reminder that great companies start with global aspirations. From their modest beginnings in Eunos (Singapore) to making their mark on the world stage, it is inspiring to see his vision come to life - not just for him but for Singapore’s growing reputation as an innovation hub. This is akin to the gems we have witnessed emerging from our global network, such as Nium and Patsnap. Wishing Albert and the Freshening team many more years of innovation and success.

Rethinking the Impact of Foreign-Owned Firms on Singapore's Labour Landscape Recent data from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) reveals that while only about 20% of firms in Singapore are foreign-owned, these companies employ a staggering 60% of Singapore residents in high-earning jobs (those earning above $12,500 monthly). On the surface, this underscores the importance of attracting foreign investments and global talent to create good jobs for Singaporeans, and highlights the great work done by EDB and other agencies to attract foreign investment. However, taking a cue from Adam Grant's advice in his book "Think Again," it's crucial to question our assumptions and re-evaluate the broader implications. As he says "The purpose of learning isn't to affirm our beliefs; it's to evolve our beliefs." The key issue that comes to mind is the risk of job losses due to global layoffs in multinational companies. While multinational corporations (MNCs) offer attractive opportunities, they are also subject to global economic shifts and corporate decisions made far from our shores. This also creates a risk of vulnerability to external decisions: Local employees may find themselves affected by global restructuring or layoffs that have little to do with the performance of the Singapore branch. If the global trend of MNC layoffs continue, it might be challenging to absorb these highly-paid workers in other parts of the economy.

What does a founder need to know when it comes to governance rights in fundraising? Our VP of Legal Vanessa Teo with Tom Jokelson, Felicia Tan, and Kelvin Goh co-authored an industry insight article on governance rights covering the key aspects and considerations of governance rights that every founder should be aware of when raising funds. This article also presents the Venture Capital Investment Model Agreements 2.0 (VIMA 2.0) position on governance rights that offers a balanced framework on governance rights, taking into account the interest of both founders and investors, and reflecting industry norms. We hope that this provides insight and better equips founders in term sheet negotiations in any capital raising transactions. On The Straits Times Headstart on Record podcast, Hong Yi Tay asked me what the most interesting challenge of being a young leader? My take: to have an environment where your team is willing to share a different opinion, and even call you out when mistakes are made. Far too often, Asian culture demands submission. If the boss says A, you do A. Combined with the insecurity and hubris of youth, it is no wonder that many young founders and leaders go unchecked, leading to bad (or even fraudulent) behavior Saying "we have a great culture" is easy. Hierarchy of needs. Not unexpected. The "essentials" that were selected by ~8 or 9 out of 10 people are what's required today. Well, if this survey was done in the 30s, refrigerators wouldn't be up there. ;) Am not so sure air-conditioning is essential, though. Ditto for private hire cars / taxis. Are we so cushy in SG that these luxury items have become essential for more than 2/3 of all surveyed?? Conversely, with everything going or gone digital, a smartphone has become an "essential" item. Another interesting observation. ~85% of all surveyed wanted more free time. What does this say about Singaporean lives in general? The Civilizational Reset Yesterday evening’s fire side chat at Singapore Apex Business Summit's opening dinner had both substance and style. That’s because the speaker was KP Ho Executive Chairman of Banyan Group and the moderator was Prof. Annie Koh, PhD. I want to share a few gems of wisdom from the speaker for you to think about: 🦉 Business as usual is complacency. Life is always about the end of business as usual because most businesses need and want to keep improving and progressing. 🦉 The paradigm shift in hospitality in the last 15 years or so is the rise of the middle classes from the global south. They now outnumber Western guests. There’s no high or low season now. 🦉 To be a successful entrepreneur you need to put in lots of hard work and you need to love what you do. You also need empathy: for your team members and for your customers. Banyan Group calls this “I am with you.” 🦉 In the service industries you need self respect in order to provide service with a genuine heart. Hence, "I am with you". The customer is not always right. 🦉 Organizational culture is the most underestimated (and, therefore, the least invested in) strategic asset a business has. So true. So sad. Businesses need to fix this asap. 🦉 The world is in the process of a civilizational reset. We are seeing the end of Western dominance which has lasted for 500+ years and the re-emergence of the multipolar world which existed before Europeans started their voyages of discovery. The jury is out whether or not we will experience a clash of civilizations or whether we can all find the path to peaceful coexistence and the acceptance of multiple political systems none of which are perfect. Let us all work and pray for peaceful coexistence. 🦉 Singapore as a hybrid between civilizations has a strategic advantage to both leverage and win: both for itself and as a beacon of what is possible in a multicultural society. 🦉 Scenario planning for various geopolitical, economic and environmental outcomes is a must for every business today. Singapore Business Owners, your data is out there. And even more shocking, It's by design! Recently ACRA - Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority released a new feature on their business portal. On there, anyone can find peoples' NRIC by searching for a person's name. On their website ACRA explained that the NRIC numbers are not masked to allow for "clear and unambiguous identification of individuals associated with businesses". So, it is not even a mistake! Some years ago, the use of NRIC numbers was banned by law (PDPA). Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) explained then that "indiscriminate collection or negligent handling of NRIC numbers can increase the risk of unintended disclosure and may result in NRIC numbers being used for illegal activities such as identity theft or fraud". I do not have words for this, to be honest. Just want to put this out there to all my followers. Be very very careful; scammers may know the "permanent and irreplaceable" personal identification number of anyone who was involved in companies registered in Singapore, now and in the past. Imagine a future where we can detect and manage chronic diseases before they even become a problem. That's the vision behind Singapore's Healthier SG initiative, and Google is proud to play a part. We're bringing the best of Google Health and Google AI to support three key initiatives in support of this vision: 1️⃣Together with Health Promotion Board, ConnectedLife Health and Fullerton Health, we’re piloting HealthTrack SG to explore how lifestyle changes can help manage chronic diseases. As you can see in the image below, we’re combining clinical data with Fitbit activity metrics, so patients can get an indication of their health wellness. Today I want to share my experience with an extraordinary individual I met just 3 months ago: Darryl WONG from Daisy Consultants Pte Ltd. It's rare to find someone who truly resonates with your vision and energy. Our paths first crossed at the Introverts Business Mixer on July 17, 2024. Since then, it's been a whirlwind of collaboration and mutual support: ✅ From our first coffee meetup to discuss Bubble app development. ✅ Darryl's interest to join a program at Temasek Polytechnic where I adjunct at. ✅ Co-hosting networking sessions with Introverts Network Asia and Real Network. ✅ Supporting each other's talks and panel discussions. ✅ Learning together in a 2-day course on OJT blueprint design for SMEs. ✅ Knowledge Sharing session on No-code and AI technology in app development. Upholding Corporate Governance in Challenging Times 🌟 Corporate governance is under the spotlight in Singapore, especially after high-profile trials involving Mr. OK Lim and Yu Zhi Ng. At kimbocorp, we don’t just talk about governance - we build systems that ensure companies under us uphold the highest standards. Let me share how we do it and why it matters. One case I’m proud of is a logistics software startup we worked with. When they came to us, their governance was shaky - no proper board meetings, no resolutions for major decisions, and directors who weren’t fully aware of their responsibilities. We knew this needed fixing. First, we ensured they appointed fit and proper directors - no nominees, no shortcuts. These were individuals vetted for their expertise in corporate law, tax compliance, and AML/CFT policies. They brought knowledge and accountability to the table. Next, our corporate secretary implemented a structured approach for board resolutions. Every major decision, from issuing new shares to appointing debtors, was recorded and communicated to stakeholders. This gave the board and shareholders complete clarity on the company’s direction. Finally, we kept the board informed with regular communication - sometimes as simple as a 5-minute call or a quick text. These touchpoints helped address issues in real-time and ensured the company stayed compliant. The result? Within a year, the startup earned the trust of investors, secured new funding, and built a reputation as a well-governed business. The Global IT outage struck last week just after QED's session on 'AI & The Workforce,' reminding us that humans are still the ultimate backup system... no fear! 🤖💼 At our latest session, we teamed up with our friends from Workforce Singapore and LinkedIn to dive into implications, risks and support for the workforce resulting from the rise of AI. This time, we shifted our focus and conversation to a more Human and Business view. Our star-studded ✨ panel featured business leaders from both private and social services sectors that gave us a lively discussion with plenty of insights from all sides! With the help of our panelists with the attending business leaders and owners, here are some nuggets of insights we uncovered: 1️⃣ Operational Efficiency & Automation: Turns out, AI’s biggest impact will be making our operations smoother and automating tasks, rarely revolutionizing business models or creating shiny new products. 🤔 2️⃣ Susceptible Roles: The most vulnerable jobs? Data entry, processing, patter recognition, and data analysis. Surprisingly, high touch work like chefs, drivers, and care-giving roles seem safer for now. So, start developing some cooking skills 😅 3️⃣ Help Wanted: Leaders are all for AI handling repetitive tasks and analysis, but not so hot about AI making decisions just yet 😉 Guess we’re ready to delegate the work, but not the responsibilities just yet! 4️⃣ Value Creation: AI brings the most value by boosting efficiency, but it’s not exactly a revenue growth machine nor able to significantly enhance customer experiences. Back to our global IT outage last week. This reminded us of one crucial fact: when tech fails, it’s the humans who save the day. This underscores the need for a symbiotic 🤝 relationship between AI and our (human) workforce. So true, Seri! You referenced MIT Sloans survey, which reminded me of sessions from their AI Strategy almost 4 years ago where culture and awareness were the impediments in adopting AI solutions and we have seen how organizations are successfully implementing this change that is here to stay.
