Congratulations to our Athens office “Trafiletes” for their incredible participation in the Athens Marathon on Sunday, raising over €80,000 for the local charity Together For Children NGO (Mazi gia to Paidi)! This achievement reflects the dedication and generosity of our colleagues and global counterparties, united in their support for children and families in need across Greece. With the Trafigura Foundation matching the funds raised, the total reached over €160,000, doubling our support for Mazi gia to Paidi’s essential work with vulnerable communities. The Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), a consortium joint-venture comprising Trafigura, Mota-Engil and VECTURIS SA, has reached an important milestone this week in strengthening its transport capacity with the arrival of the first batch of 275 new container wagons in Lobito, Angola. This strategic investment into new wagons, purchased from Galison Group Manufacturing in South Africa, is part of LAR's expansion and modernisation plan over the next three years. The wagons include a modern pneumatic braking system and light steel structure, contributing to safer and more efficient transport operations. Since January 2024, LAR has been operating, managing and maintaining the railway line that extends across Angola for almost 1,300km between the Port of Lobito to Luau in eastern Angola and connects with the rail network run by the National Railway Society of the Congo (SNCC) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Kolwezi, the heart of the Copperbelt. After investment, the railway will provide a quicker western route to market for minerals and metals produced in the Congolese Copperbelt. Coinciding with the start of COP29, Trafigura, together with GenZero, a Temasek-owned investment platform focused on accelerating decarbonisation globally, have announced a significant expansion of the Brújula Verde landscape restoration project located in Colombia’s Orinoco River Basin - one of the country’s most biodiverse areas. This landmark commitment of over USD100 million will help restore land degraded by intensive agricultural activities and fires, and will involve the planting of over 24 million mixed-species trees by the project’s operational partner, InverBosques - Gerencia de Proyectos Forestales – which is one of the largest private employers in the region. Matthew Nelson, Head of Carbon Investments at Trafigura said: "We are delighted to welcome GenZero to this collaboration. This expansion demonstrates how investment grade carbon removal assets can enable institutional finance at scale. GenZero’s partnership will enhance the scope and impact of Brújula Verde, bringing local employment alongside environmental and biodiversity benefits to the region, whilst producing high integrity nature-based carbon removal credits."    Ling Min Hoon, Director of Investments at GenZero said: “The Brújula Verde project marks an important effort in restoring one of Colombia’s most biologically diverse areas. Trafigura has signed a long-term natural gas agreement with NuVista Energy Ltd.   Igor Marin, Global Head of Gas, Power and Renewables for Trafigura said: “We’re delighted to be entering into a long-term offtake agreement with NuVista which has become a leading E&P producer in the Alberta Deep Basin. Our Head of Carbon, Asia Pacific, Rushan Pandya spoke at the FT Asia Commodities Summit this week to discuss how evolving compliance mechanisms are reshaping carbon markets. "Across Asia there are a significant number of countries expanding existing and developing new carbon pricing regimes by 2026. Many markets may also incorporate their own style of carbon border taxes on imports, increasing complexity of traded commodities in the region. Last week, colleagues from the Trafigura #Houston office attended the inauguration of a renovated playground at AAMA, a non-profit that provides vital educational, social, and health services to disadvantaged youth and families. At the end of last year, Houston staff came together to refurbish the neglected playground, which is essential to AAMA’s childcare facilities, by organising a bidding initiative. To support the staff fundraiser, the management team decided to auction unique items—model ships and cargo tanker replicas—during their office move in September 2023. The auction raised substantial funds, to which the Trafigura Foundation contributed, bringing the total to USD 50,000. These funds were distributed among several local charities, including Target Hunger, which is dedicated to alleviating hunger in Houston by providing nutritious food and essential resources to families in need The renovated space will serve around 60 children from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with a safe and welcoming area to play ✨

Our Global Head of Strategic Investments, Julien Rolland, joined the FT Africa Summit this week to discuss Trafigura’s role in the development of the Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR). This important transport corridor runs from Angola's port of Lobito to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing a critical connection for the region. The US government is also supporting the renovation of the 1,300km railway line. As well as the domestic importance of the line, Julien highlighted the railway’s benefits for the metals industry, with Trafigura and its consortium partners holding a 30-year concession to operate and upgrade this route. “The DRC has enormous mineral potential, but limited infrastructure. Two decades ago, it was producing a few hundred thousand tonnes of copper; today, it’s closer to four million tonnes—but still relying on a highly congested road network to get the product to export. This new and unified brand reflects the company’s commitment to advancing Europe’s renewable hydrogen market. As MorGen Energy, the company remains dedicated to developing large-scale green hydrogen ecosystems, with flagship projects such as the planned 1GW Njordkraft initiative in Esbjerg, Denmark, and a 20MW project in Milford Haven, Wales.
