Essi Jukkala and I had a catchup yesterday, where I mentioned how I feel like the industry has so many "new" players in the DEI field that I often don't even know who is who, and what people are working on. And that got me thinking - why not bring everyone together for a chat? What do I love about leading people and teams? Helping people find balance in work and in life. Watching people grow and become the best versions of themselves. Advocating for positive and healthy working environments and people taking time off to recharge. Coaching and mentoring people and seeing them grow to the next level - in my team and company or in their next opportunity. Being there for the big moments in their life - and supporting them through the harder ones too. I'm so proud of so many people who have worked with me over the years. Growing into leaders themselves or carving out key individual contributor niches. Sometimes people aren't quite the right fit, and I love working with them to build the skills and experiences to get them ready for the next opportunity that is. Promoting within the company is always my end game, but I also never think why did I invest all that time in someone just to see them leave. I love watching people grow and follow the path that's meant for them. Leading is a privilege. And I love every minute of it. #leadership #growth

As an HR person I like to follow various research and statistics on changes in economy, society, labor market, longevity and more, and see what trends I have to prepare for when it comes to #futureofwork This report is very interesting for person like me, to see how my home country, Iceland, is doing in comparison to other European countries. Some pleasantly surprising and not so pleasant numbers in the report... This report is also very interesting for me as the Head of HR at #EFTA, to see various numbers from the countries we operate in and the countries we most hire talent from. Numbers like graduates from various fields of study, employment rate, gender pay gap, cost of living, living conditions, digital usage, investment in research and development and more. Do you think that streaming services with ad-supported tiers have resulted in higher levels of piracy? 🏴‍☠️ This question has come as a result of some statistics I noticed recently, as piracy in the Nordic media market remains a significant issue. The illegal consumption of films, series, and live sports is increasing; as of the first quarter of 2024, 25% of 15-74-year-olds in the Nordics (or about 5 million people) have been engaging in piracy—400,000 more than the previous year! Additionally, 1.3 million households subscribe to illegal IPTV services, a 16% increase from last year. Natalia Borelius from Mediavision attributes this rise to financial pressures on households and higher prices for legal alternatives... What do you think? #neuco #piracy

Professional upgrade courtesy of Future Talent Council chapter 3, this time on the topic of TRUST. Last June in Stockholm, Hans Vestberg in conversation with Geoff Colvin pointed out that one of the main reasons for success at Verizon revolved around the idea of trust. In Hans' words: "Our number 1 brand value is trust. AI data on employee and customer experience is ONLY used internally at our company. We do not expose data to any third party because this undermines the trust we have been given. For example: we use data internally to predict, route and assign queries. Besides, and by the way, exporting data to third parties would be more expensive and consume much more energy. Move the computing storage -> increase latency. The network comes first (the most important), then the devices". Imagine how a seemingly industry-specific technicality from the IT sector extrapolates to strategic organizational development otherwise. A topic all to present in many of our professional experiences, Hans' reflections wakes several questions. First important question: 1. Are you trustworthy, as a person, organization or social collective? Second: 2. What is your 'latency'? In other words, how far are you (really?) from those stakeholders that need to/should trust you: colleagues, clients, or else? Third: 3. What is the relationship between the 'devices' (i.e. the people) within your 'network' (i.e. your workforce, market landscape or social environment)? Fourth: 4. Is the fiber that connects these relationships one-directional, based on nepotism-narcissism grounds, or does it serve a truly functional, two-way, mutually beneficial purpose? (Please read nr. 1 above, once again). When you ask Merriam-Webster Inc. for the definition of TRUST, she answers: '- reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something. - one in which confidence is placed. - dependence on something future or contingent (dependent on or conditioned by something else)'. How many of the above boxes would you tick if "troubleshot" by Hans and his team, as a person, organization, political/business leader, colleague, privately or in your societal role? If I understood Hans correctly and coming from an IT industry one would like to learn more about (and which clearly needs to address its energy consumption footprint more thoroughly 🫣), the takeaway from today could be simplified as follows: If your devices are not working (because they don't trust you), do expect your network to fall apart. Things I wish I did as an overwhelmed new manager trying to prove myself. The conversation around new managers often focuses on essential leadership skills and handling difficult conversations, and rightfully so. Those are both important topics and very relevant to new managers and leadership. But the overwhelm that comes with being a new manager is often glossed over. I have found the overwhelm new mangers face typically has less to do with the skills they have or don’t have and more to do with managing their time, expectations, and workload. It’s a big transition. What I did →Pushed through and told myself there was an end in sight. →Developed bad habits of saying yes to things when I didn’t have the capacity to take them on. →Produced work that did not have my full attention and, if I’m being honest, was not my best. →Worked crazy long hours just to keep up. None of this was sustainable. What I should have done ✓Recognized how overwhelmed I was and assessed what was a priority and what wasn’t. ✓Prioritized my calendar and made sure I had time blocked off for uninterrupted work. ✓Invested more time to find an organizing system and routines that worked for me. ✓Learned how to set boundaries with my time. ✓Learned when to say yes, when to say no, when to delegate. Homefinding time for newcomers in Sweden Nimmersion is busy at this time of year finding housing for the new hires (and old ones that need to move to a new place). Navigating a dysfunctional housing market in heavy competition is demanding. What is our protocol? 1. Frauds and scams need to be identified (there are many) 2. Negotiation skills 3. Viewing and validating all data and properties 4. Help the person looking for a property to understand the dynamics of the rental market 5. Educate the landlord on the rental law which is legally binding 6. Checking ownership/permit to sublet 7. Setting up a legally correct lease 8. Inspection of the property before move in (start with the end in mind - ie deposit return) Fortunately, we have done this for thirty years so we know the ins and outs, yet this time of year many students are also urgently competing to get housing so the market it tight and extremly fast moving. So I entered the main stage at Nordic Game to explain how a diverse team would serve both profit and performance by showing cases of what we have done and how you actually can change the the situation with small efforts. It took a global pandemic for companies to embrace remote work, and yet some are now turning their backs on it, even though it's a proven model that works and even brings cost savings for both businesses and employees. The pandemic allowed many employees to experience a better work-life balance, higher productivity, and reduced commuting stress. Companies now pushing for a return to the office only show how little they care about their employees. It's also astonishingly short-sighted and arrogant to assume that employees won't leave for companies that prioritise flexibility and respect their needs. If you cannot trust your people they are not the ones that will drive you to success.

I'm very excited to reveal that alongside One Trick, I've started working with the Tampereen kaupunki - City of Tampere in the field of digital youth work, where my role involves using the amazing world of video and tabletop role-playing games as an engaging tool for young people. Times are tough globally, and so they are here, and I find the current situation for young people in Finland to be distressingly unfair. Combining my strong expertise from the video game industry with my training in social services + 20 years of ttrpg's, I aim to provide diverse and joyful experiences for those who love video games and nerd culture. Both the players and my new colleagues seem to be amazing individuals with no shortage of skills! One Trick's debut game, LEMPO, is nominated this week for the Finnish Game Awards as the Finnish Game of the Year. So, things aren't going badly for One Trick in that sense, despite the challenging general situation in the gaming industry, which affects a small indie team greatly - to be honest. Oskari Pelli will represent us at the gala, so go and enjoy a cold one with him! Last time, we came away with an award. This year, the competition seems to be once again extremely tough, so I'm not sure... well, let's see. We consider the nomination a victory already! Let's keep our fingers and toes crossed for LEMPO together! One Trick has some incredibly exciting projects in the pipeline - more on that later (unless you're a publisher reading this far, in which case, feel free to reach out, and you'll see what I'm talking about)! ;) Right now you can go and download the demo of Sunday Run and give it a test.
