On April 16, 2024, the Finnish government finalized its fiscal policy. Once again the healthcare sector had to take an enormous hit, setting the stage for an unprecedented healthcare staffing crisis. Here's how we are expertly building the foundation for a future disaster: 1. 🏥 Imagine an elderly care home with 20 residents now having one less staff member. This isn't just about numbers it's about increased workloads, higher turnover rates, and a declining interest in nursing and caregiving roles (something already very much present). Our healthcare workers who were already burning out will now need to handle even more work load. 2. ⏳ By 2030, nearly 26% of nurses, 31% of public health nurses, and a staggering 47% of middle directors in nursing will retire. We're not keeping up with the replacement pace, and this gap is widening every day. 3. 👵👴 Finland's elderly population is increasing year by year, a demographic reality that no budget cut or policy shift can alter. The demand for healthcare professionals is skyrocketing, yet our staffing ratios are moving in the opposite direction. Its a real interesting question to explore if digital health companies need to build their own complete integrated supply chains to successfully scale their business model outside of the traditional healthcare space. In other words, is the difficultly and barriers of integrate a digital health product into exist healthcare supply chains so high that it makes sense to buy your own practice and then re-create the care delivery dynamics to better fit your digital health product offering? Its seems like a strange idea. Then again distribution in the digital health space is very difficult, I heard from our advisors plus others that the typical sales cycle for a digital health product with providers takes 2-3 years to complete. Still the cost of setting up a bricks and mortar or even a virtual distribution network is beyond the financial reach of most digital health companies. Maybe these 'digital first distribution' businesses will evolve in the future to support the distribution of third party products. For example Him & Her Inc. have done well leveraging a digital health first business to distribute and sell drugs and other products.

Work Conflicts and Lack of Influence Dramatically Boost Sick Leave for Women A recent study by the University of Gothenburg, published in the *Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care*, has uncovered a significant link between work-related stress and sick leave among middle-aged women. Analyzing data from 573 women aged 38 and 50, the study found that job conflicts and a lack of influence at work are major stressors leading to higher sick leave rates. The findings are compelling: 75% of the participants experienced work-related or general stress, and 16% took at least two weeks of sick leave in the following year. Women facing job conflicts were more than twice as likely to take sick leave, even after accounting for other factors like general stress, age, and wellbeing. Similarly, a lack of decision-making power at work also significantly increased the risk of sick leave. Kirsten Mehlig, Associate Professor of Epidemiology, and Dominique Hange, the study's lead researcher, both emphasized the urgent need to improve work environments to reduce stress and sick leave among women.

🔬 Europe Falling Behind the US in Life Sciences: Time for Change 🌍 At a recent seminar organized by Lif in collaboration with the European Commission's representation in Sweden, it was highlighted that Europe is lagging behind the US in life sciences. This trend must be reversed. The seminar, held at Europahuset in Stockholm, underscored Sweden's potential to grow in the pharmaceutical sector, with the government actively seeking industry collaboration. EU Minister Jessika Roswall, the keynote speaker, emphasized the need for close cooperation between the government and the industry. She has initiated a special EU working group within the government focused on the pharmaceutical sector, including Lif: "We must work closely together to leverage the current momentum on competitiveness," Roswall said. Key takeaways included: Maintaining Data Protection: Roswall stressed that data protection periods for new drugs should not be shortened. EU's Economic Challenges: The seminar discussed the EU's declining share of the global economy and the need for increased investment in research and innovation. Pharmaceutical Costs: Despite advancements, pharmaceutical costs have remained stable in the Nordic countries, partly due to effective price negotiations and reduced clinical trials post-COVID.
