The role of Principal Advisor - CSP and Environment will have the opportunity to support the mission of delivering our Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) objectives with environment and CSP at the core.
We are seeking a suitably qualified person to support the Copper Health, Safety, Environment and Communities (HSEC) team in mitigating increasing exposure to our organizations risks associated with a product group growth agenda.
Reporting to the Copper HSEC Vice President, this role will be based in the Daybreak office, Salt Lake City (South Jordan), Utah, USA with an expectation for some travel to support work associated with Copper’s growth portfolio, or as otherwise directed.
Key accountabilities include: Work across the full portfolio of Projects and Non-managed Joint Ventures (NMJV) within the Copper PG and take accountability for CSP and environment planning and performance of this portfolio.
Provide SME support to early-stage growth studies to ensure that CSP & Environment strategy, impact assessment, regulatory approvals, management plans and engagement expectations are understood and considered.
Act as the primary interface for the Copper Product Group HSEC team for its NMJV, with a key focus on; building and maintaining relationships, influencing decisions, conducting technical project reviews, and providing input and support to relevant advisory committees.
Identify and implement improvements to the Product Group growth strategy and the provision of clear guidance on HSEC/ESG standards and procedures to support the growth portfolio.
Define the scope, risks, resourcing, and budgeting requirements for Environment & CSP aspects of projects.
As required, support capability development of NMJV partner roles through coaching.
Provide technical support to existing copper assets/projects, as necessary or requested.
What you will bring A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team and the values of Rio Tinto (care, courage, curiosity) Degree qualified in Community and Social Performance, Environment, Law, Anthropology, Archaeology or a related field; advanced degrees preferred.
Significant experience (10+ years) in CSP and/or Environment technical planning, design and execution, with project experience strongly preferred.
Robust understanding of emerging ESG standards and practices in extractive industries.
Experience working at a grassroots level with deep understanding of environmental, community and social development aspects.
Direct experience with environment & social impact assessments and baselines preferred; at minimum, the analytical and intellectual capacity to understand the logic of these exercises and the ability to manage their implementation is necessary.
Collaboration and influencing skills that include stakeholder analysis and engagement strategies across internal and external networks, including external affairs, outreach organisations, communications, technical & engineering, and other relevant teams.
Proficient in managing complex and sensitive issues with reputation management experience.
Fluency in English is required; intermediate or advanced Spanish is desirable.
Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
