This is a customer service position at the J.
Willard Marriott Library that works to maintain a welcoming, safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees, and helps to provide effective access to resources and collections.
The position also plays a vital role in protecting the library’s collections and cultural property.
Assistants help maintain a safe and secure environment by conducting facility rounds, monitor users’ activities to ensure compliance with library policies, assess and report suspicious activities to the proper campus agencies, and act as first responders in emergency situations, i.
e.
, fire alarms, security alarms, and first aid calls until the appropriate emergency responders arrive onsite.
This position is also responsible for providing exceptional patron service in-person, over the phone, and through email as well as facilitating the fulfillment of electronic and physical library resources.
These positions are responsible for managing patron accounts, cashiering functions, and lost and found, and generally providing a one-stop service opportunity for the library.
This position is intended as an entry level position, with the opportunity of advancement within five months of employment after demonstrating consistent and reliable performance.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.
Responsibilities Conduct regular building patrols and demonstrate a constant presence while in the library.
Maintain and ensure an environment that is conducive to research and learning.
Enforce all library and University policies in addition to resolving complaints and library policy infractions appropriately.
Assistants may decide if an individual should be removed from the library for a specified period of time.
Responsible for noticing problems with the building and reporting them to library and campus.
Initiate conversations with individuals at the entrances if the book gate alarm is triggered to guarantee that library materials are properly checked out.
Document all incidents that occur within the library or its grounds – whether it is building-related or patron related.
Collect lost and found items from within the library and its immediate grounds, and maintain a record of items in the department database.
Responsible for coordinating circulation including, account creation, fine and lost book resolutions, billing, recalls and holds management.
Provide service retrieving items that are available for pickup such as Interlibrary Loan, Holds, and Automated Retrieval Center (ARC) material.
Perform all cashier functions for the library related to circulation, printing, and the library store.
Responsible for completing opening procedures, as well as clearing and securing the building and its contents each night.
Provide library information and basic research assistance, including accessing electronic journals and research databases.
Respond to Library Chat services during applicable hours and answering referral questions from patrons and/or others on duty.
The duties and tasks included are representative of the position and not comprehensive.
Duties may be added or removed in the best interest of the organization and its patrons.
Minimum Qualifications Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
This position requires the successful completion of a criminal background check upon job offer.
Preferences Library Operations & Protection Services has a tremendous amount of responsibility.

They must demonstrate good human relations, communication, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills.

Cashiering experience is also desired.
