Retrospectives are key not only for continuous improvement but also for boosting team morale. When team members feel heard, they gain confidence and naturally become more self-organized. And it doesn’t always need to be formal—I personally prefer a more informal approach. Also, keeping management out of retrospectives helps create a safe space for the team to open up and be honest. ❓Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions!❓ One of the main responsibilities of a Project Manager during meetings with customers is to ask questions. Ask for all the details about everything. If you don't understand a requirement, ask twice! If you feel that your team has doubts, ask a third time! Make it clear for everyone. No one will judge you for asking questions, but if your team delivers the wrong value to the customer, that responsibility falls on you. “Absences in Critical Project Phases: An Opportunity or a Risk” Today, I reflected on a situation in my project team that every project manager faces at some point: the impact of team member absences during critical project phases. In our agile IT transformation project, we are in the first phase—a phase that involves developing the application from A to Z. Two team members had to step away temporarily, and I replaced them with others in the team. What I discovered was unexpected: the replacements performed so well that it made me question whether I needed the original team members at all. This experience left me with key takeaways: 1️⃣ Adaptability Reveals Opportunities: When replacements can step in seamlessly, it highlights the team’s resilience and can reveal redundancies. This might lead to cost optimization—but it requires careful thought. 2️⃣ No Absences in the First Phase: Early project phases are critical for building momentum and establishing roles. Absences during this time not only disrupt the flow but can inadvertently signal that some roles may not be essential. 3️⃣ Balancing Cost and Morale: While reducing team size is tempting, it’s vital to balance cost-saving measures with the risk of demotivating the team. Ensuring everyone feels valued and secure in their role is equally important. Reflecting on this, I believe project management isn’t just about allocating resources—it’s about understanding when and how resources are needed while fostering a culture of adaptability and trust.
