Open Maps For Europe 2 (OME2) released the first prototype for harmonised high-value data at the end of May. “This is a really exciting milestone that will benefit national providers of geospatial data and users alike,” said Victoria Persson, Project Manager – Data Access and Integration, EuroGeographics. “The prototype is aligned to key EU policies, as well as UN core geospatial data recommendations for local level actions, and provides large-scale administrative boundary information as well as transport and railway networks, ports and airports.” “The authoritative data is harmonised across countries and available via the Open Maps For Europe interface. This study leverages an innovative PPGIS (Public Participatory Geographical Information System) approach to map stakeholder perceptions of Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP) across the 12 Portuguese BRs. 🔍 Key highlights: ✔️ Identification of NCP hotspots, crucial areas for conservation and restoration. ✔️ Emphasis on the importance of habitat creation, physical/psychological experiences, and cultural identity. ✔️ Insights into how stakeholder perceptions can improve land-use planning and sustainable governance. 💡 Why does this matter? New Office for National Statistics release on number of libraries in England and Wales against various geographies: "Geographies include local authority districts (LADs), built up areas (BUAs) and combined authorities." https://lnkd.in/eS5FJp3f The data uses three sources: Ordnance Survey NGD (National Geographic Database), CILIP: The library and information association (Wales) Public Libraries by Operator, and Arts Council England Basic Dataset for Libraries. It also says "This analysis contains the locations of 3,159 static public libraries, accurate to May 2024." It doesn't seem like the source data is accurate to that date though. If the analysis was done in May 2024, the Arts Council dataset would presumably be the snapshot for 2022. The CILIP in Wales data was compiled into Wikidata in 2018. Good as an indication, but should be treated with some caution until there is a good real-time dataset of library locations.

A lot is happening currently at the Open Geospatial Consortium that can serve science to enable multidisciplinaries cooperation, make data, processes and worflows FAIR - Findable , Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, accross distributed infrastructures hosting data, offering processing capacities, or advanced visualization fonctionalities. OGC builds location standards and #APIs relying on reusable building blocks to upscale the interoperability and the reusability as needed for #DataSpaces, #DigitalTwins, #OpenScience, supporting #Trust and #Transparency . In recent years, computational and sampling methods have had a significant impact on redistricting and gerrymandering. In this paper, we introduce a distance measure over redistricting maps and study its implications. First, we identify a central map that mirrors the Kemeny ranking in a scenario where a committee is voting over a collection of redistricting maps to be drawn. Second, we also show how our distance measure can be used to possibly detect gerrymandered maps. My friend Robert Vos is editing a special issue of _Case Studies in the Environment_: Case Studies from #GIS and #SustainabilityScience. Please get in touch with him (email below) if you have interest. Case Studies in the Environment (CSE), published by UC Press, is an academic journal that serves a unique role at the intersection of teaching and research. The journal is a repository of peer reviewed, short (2,000-5,000 words) case studies each with a set of case questions and many amended with slides, teaching notes, and other materials. A CSE case study distills research or practice anchored in a specific context. Students learn by engaging in the case. Submissions of cases across a broad range of research and practice in GIS and sustainability science that would be suitable for student replication in lab settings would be welcome. Cases could feature either real-world applications or existing academic research that is recast for teaching. Cases could come from a range of specialized areas of GIS work such as spatial analysis, earth observation, geodesign, spatial data science, application development, and projects with qualitative components (e.g., softGIS or participatory GIS). Cases should use GIS to link human and natural systems and might go beyond descriptions of problems to include charting of sustainability transitions. Students would be able to grasp and replicate the GIS workflow used in the case and some or all case questions might relate to carrying out the workflow. For example, some case questions might ask students to produce maps or build and query geospatial datasets. The editor is particularly interested in cases framed by the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Such areas could include one or more of the following: Sustainable Cities and Communities Responsible Consumption and Production No Poverty and Reduced Inequalities Zero Hunger Good Health and Well-Being Climate Action and Affordable and Clean Energy Decent Work and Economic Growth To aid in using the case in GIS labs, authors should make use of the article narrative and/or teaching notes (i.e., supplemental information), aiming for a level of detail appropriate to the case and the GIS skills of the anticipated audience.
