Launch of the Clinical Innovation Barometer: A Strategic Perspective for the Future of Healthcare in Portugal 🌍💡 Last week, NTT DATA Europe & Latam unveiled the first-ever Clinical Innovation Barometer, a groundbreaking study presented during the Innovation in Health Awards. This initiative gathered insights from Clinical Research Centers (CRCs) across Portugal, highlighting critical challenges and opportunities within the clinical innovation ecosystem. 🔍 Key Findings: 💡 Recognition: 71% of CRCs feel valued by hospital administrations, but societal recognition remains low. 💡 Autonomy: High autonomy in defining strategies (68%), but significant limitations in recruitment and incentives, with 91% reporting little or no autonomy in these areas. 💡 Workforce Capacity: Alarmingly, 34% of CRCs operate with 0 or 1 full-time staff, revealing critical challenges in scaling operations and attracting talent. 💡 Priorities: Team capacity building (77%) and process digitization (71%) are strategic focal points. 💡 Digital Transformation: 42% of CRCs rate their digital maturity as high or very high, with clinical trial management platforms and local system integration being top priorities. 💡 Collaboration: Strong cooperation with the pharmaceutical industry (83%) but limited engagement with patient associations (86%). ✨ Why this Barometer? CRCs play a vital role in advancing innovative therapies and technologies, yet face operational and recognition barriers. Glad to have attended the Forbes Portugal Health Care Summit 2024 in Lisbon, where I had the opportunity to listen to leaders shaping the future of healthcare. Speakers like NUNO Prego Ramos (CEO, Valvian), Ricardo Baptista Leite, M.D. (CEO, Health AI), Francisco Goiana da Silva (Medical Doctor), Nuno Marques (National Coordinator, Active and Healthy Aging Action Plan), and Francisco Campilho (CEO, Victoria Seguros) shared their insights on the intersection of medicine, biotech, regulation, and AI. This summit again inspired me to begin writing a follow-up to my previous article. Below are some key thoughts and takeaways I’ve formulated, reflecting on the discussions and their relevance to current healthcare challenges: ↳ In a world where technology is revolutionizing healthcare, patient autonomy plays a pivotal role in preventive medicine. Empowering individuals to manage their health—by accessing their data, gaining insights on health metrics, and receiving personalized prescriptions via digital health apps—will not only benefit patients but also empower doctors in the preventive care phase. ↳ This integrative and multimodal approach will help identify early diagnoses and improve long-term treatment outcomes. And currently, leveraging data science and engineering solutions, powered by AI, is a key element in bringing together diverse health data to deliver truly personalized healthcare. ↳ Investing in preventive medicine can significantly ease the burden on healthcare systems. As highlighted in the report, The Value of Prevention for Economic Growth and the Sustainability of Healthcare, Social Care and Welfare Systems by The European House, every €1 invested in preventive care generates a €14 return in health and social care. ↳ The idea of handing clinical and biological data ownership to patients and healthcare professionals is essential for progress. However, political and ideological barriers continue to hinder this vision. It’s time for lighter, more agile regulations that can keep pace with innovation while ensuring safety standards. ↳ These regulations should also be paired with cooperation between insurance companies and healthspan planning, building platforms that incentivize citizens to live healthier lives. ↳ Quality metrics, rather than quantity metrics, must remain at the forefront. AI should enhance not just the speed of care but the depth and accuracy of clinical assessments. This means strengthening the doctor-patient relationship and promoting a more holistic and humane approach to each individual’s care. By combining preventive strategies, technology-driven care, and smart regulations, we can create a healthcare system that is not only more efficient but more human-centered. In a brave and rare move the Mayor of the Portuguese city #Coimbra, has published his payslip on his facebook page. In the post he also clarifies that in #Portugal the income of a City Mayor is linked to the number of citizens of the Municipality (roughly 141 thousand citizens according to the 2021 census). The payslip shows that the annual base salary is approximately 54,500€ and then there is also a meal allowance of 6€ / work day and "representation expenses". It shows a net pay of ~3,000€ but this would be in fact less than 2,200€ without the "representation expenses". To put things in perspective, it is important to mention that the annual minimum national salary in Portugal is of 11,480€ and the annual average gross income is 22,960€. Considering the all the responsibilities of his role (including managing a budget of over 200M€ / year), what do you think about his pay?
